Studies on the potential and public health importance of non-biting synanthropic flies in the mechanical transmission of human enterohelminths.

BACKGROUND: This study was aimed at examining the potential of non-biting synanthropic filth flies to acquire naturally eggs of human intestinal helminths from unsanitary sites, and its attendant public health importance. METHODS: Body surface washings and gut contents of flies caught foraging while infected human faeces lay exposed at a garbage dump in Iperu, Ogun State, Nigeria and within 24 hours subsequently after removal of faeces from the dump were examined parasitologically by the formol-ether concentration technique. The viability of helminth eggs isolated from flies was determined by

Above-elbow amputation and death following human bite mismanaged by quacks: a case report and review of literature.

BACKGROUND: Human bite is a common injury sustained during a fight, love passion, self mutilation, cannibalism or vampirism. Although widely reported as being more dangerous than animal bites, such complications as limb amputation from gangrene and eventually death is either uncommon or scarcely reported in our environment. OBJECTIVE: To highlight the dangers of human bite as a potential cause of severe morbidity and mortality especially when poorly managed. METHODOLOGY: A 30 year old Fulani herdsman with gangrene of the right hand, and distal forearm presenting in coma 10 days after sustain

Rabid foxes, rabid raccoons, and the odds of a human bite exposure, New York State, 1999-2007.

Anecdotal evidence suggests that rabid foxes are more likely to attack humans than are other rabid terrestrial animals. To examine this issue, we analyzed rabies surveillance data (1999-2007) maintained by the New York State Department of Health. Compared to rabid raccoons (Procyon lotor), foxes infected with raccoon variant rabies were more likely to bite during a human exposure incident (P<0.01). Additionally, rabid gray foxes (Urocyon cinereoargenteus) were significantly more likely to bite a human than were rabid red foxes (Vulpes vulpes; P<0.01). Animal control personnel and others who ha

A 4-year review of human bite injuries presenting to emergency medicine and proposed evidence-based guidelines.

Human bite injuries are a common injury, roughly accounting for around 0.1% of attendances to Emergency Medicine departments. Morbidities associated with such injuries are legion. Of paramount importance is the potential for infection of the wound site, both bacterial and viral. A retrospective 4-year review of 3136 case notes was conducted, identifying 421 human bites. This amounts to one every 3 days! The majority of those bitten were young males (male:female ratio=3:1; 44% comprising the age group 16-25 years). The management of these wounds was found to be poor. 17% of patients did not rec

Piranha attacks on humans in southeast Brazil: epidemiology, natural history, and clinical treatment, with description of a bite outbreak.

There are many tales describing ferocious schools of piranha attacking humans, but there are few scientific data supporting such behavior. The very few documented instances of humans attacked and eaten by piranha schools include 3 that occurred after death by other causes (eg, heart failure and drowning). These predaceous fishes, however, do occasionally injure bathers and swimmers in lakes and rivers. The characteristic profile of most injuries is a single bite per victim, generally related to the fish defending its brood. This paper describes an outbreak of piranha bites in a dammed river po

Epidemiological and molecular characteristics of human-biting ticks in areas endemic to Japanese spotted fever: a prospective study.

Tick-borne diseases (TBDs) have become a great health concern worldwide. This study aimed to clarify the pathogenic and potentially pathogenic microorganisms carried by ticks that bite humans and to assess the risk of acquiring tick-borne infections in regions endemic for Japanese spotted fever. Tick specimens were prospectively collected from patients who presented with tick bites at 10 medical institutions in the Hiroshima, Okayama, and Kagawa prefectures, Japan between May 2023 and December 2024. The evaluated parameters included the estimated bite location, date of bite, patient age, tick

Spatial modeling of Borrelia genospecies in human-biting ticks from the French citizen science programme CiTIQUE.

In Europe, Lyme borreliosis is the most common vector-borne human disease, mainly caused by Borrelia afzelii and Borrelia garinii, two species of the Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato (Bbsl) complex transmitted by Ixodes ricinus. Assessing the spatial risk of human exposure to these pathogens is essential for efficient public health surveillance, yet conventional monitoring often fails to produce geographically explicit, large-scale data capturing exposure heterogeneity and its drivers. Focusing on continental France, we used data from the CiTIQUE citizen science programme to analyse spatial var

Peromyscus leucopus, Mus musculus, and humans have distinct transcriptomic responses to larval Ixodes scapularis bites.

Ixodes scapularis ticks are an important vector for at least seven tick-borne human pathogens, including a North American Lyme disease spirochete, Borrelia burgdorferi. The ability for these ticks to survive in nature is credited, in part, to their ability to feed on a variety of hosts without triggering an immune response capable of preventing tick feeding. While the ability of nymphal ticks to feed on a variety of hosts has been well documented, the host-parasite interactions between larval I. scapularis and different vertebrate hosts are relatively unexplored. Here we report on the changes

Using a V-Y Advance Flap for Alar Rim Defect After Human Bite: A Case Report.

A human bite is a traumatic injury that often occurs in the recipient's nasal area. In this report, we describe the case of a 38-year-old man who was bitten by his roommate and sustained an alar rim defect. After reviewing the literature and professional recommendations for managing human bite wounds in the nasal area, we found both were unclear as to whether it is best to implement primary reconstruction or to defer reconstruction to a later date. We utilized a V-Y flap for secondary reconstruction in our patient.

Observing the distribution of mosquito bites on humans to inform personal protection measures against malaria and dengue vectors.

BACKGROUND: Understanding mosquito biting behaviours is important for designing and evaluating protection methods against nuisance biting and mosquito-borne diseases (e.g. dengue, malaria and zika). We investigated the preferred biting sites by Aedes aegypti and Anopheles arabiensis on adult volunteers in standing or sleeping positions; and estimated the theoretical protection limits affordable from protective clothing or repellent-treated footwear. METHODS: Adult volunteers dressed in shorts and t-shirts were exposed to infection-free laboratory-reared mosquitoes inside screened chambers fro

Mosquito-bite infection of humanized mice with chikungunya virus produces systemic disease with long-term effects.

Chikungunya virus (CHIKV) is an emerging, mosquito-borne alphavirus responsible for acute to chronic arthralgias and neuropathies. Although it originated in central Africa, recent reports of disease have come from many parts of the world, including the Americas. While limiting human CHIKV cases through mosquito control has been used, it has not been entirely successful. There are currently no licensed vaccines or treatments specific for CHIKV disease, thus more work is needed to develop effective countermeasures. Current animal research on CHIKV is often not representative of human disease. Mo

Vector competence of human-biting ticks Ixodes scapularis, Amblyomma americanum and Dermacentor variabilis for Powassan virus.

BACKGROUND: Powassan virus (POWV; genus Flavivirus) is the sole North American member of the tick-borne encephalitis sero-complex and an increasing public health threat in the USA. Maintained in nature by Ixodes spp. ticks, POWV has also been isolated from species of other hard tick genera, yet it is unclear if these species can serve as vectors. Dermacentor variabilis and Amblyomma americanum share geographic and ecologic overlap with Ixodes spp. ticks and POWV transmission foci, raising the possibility that POWV could become established in these tick species and leading to range expansion an

First Data on Human Lyme Borreliosis in Kosovo: Prospective Evaluation of the Disease from a Tick Bite Perspective.

Purpose: Lyme borreliosis (LB) occurs throughout Europe. No clinical and seroprevalence studies for LB in Kosovo have been publicly available thus far. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate LB from a tick bite perspective in the Pristina region, Kosovo. Methods: This single-center prospective observational study enrolled consecutive adult participants (≥18 years of age) with tick bite (embedded tick in the skin), who were examined at the Clinic of Infectious Diseases, Pristina, between January 2015 and August 2018. At the first visit related to the index tick bite, ticks (the complete tic

The mosquito electrocuting trap as an exposure-free method for measuring human-biting rates by Aedes mosquito vectors.

BACKGROUND: Entomological monitoring of Aedes vectors has largely relied on surveillance of larvae, pupae and non-host-seeking adults, which have been poorly correlated with human disease incidence. Exposure to mosquito-borne diseases can be more directly estimated using human landing catches (HLC), although this method is not recommended for Aedes-borne arboviruses. We evaluated a new method previously tested with malaria vectors, the mosquito electrocuting trap (MET) as an exposure-free alternative for measuring landing rates of Aedes mosquitoes on people. Aims were to (i) compare the MET to

Human biting activity, spatial-temporal distribution and malaria vector role of Anopheles calderoni in the southwest of Colombia.

BACKGROUND: Anopheles calderoni was first recognized in Colombia in 2010 as this species had been misidentified as Anopheles punctimacula due to morphological similarities. An. calderoni is considered a malaria vector in Peru and has been found naturally infected with Plasmodium falciparum in Colombia. However, its biting behaviour, population dynamics and epidemiological importance have not been well described for Colombia. METHODS: To assess the contribution of An. calderoni to malaria transmission and its human biting behaviour and spatial/temporal distribution in the southwest of Colombia

Outdoor post-mortem bite injuries by Tapinoma nigerrimum (Hymenoptera, Formicidae) on a human corpse: Case report.

Ants are among the insects that colonize exposed human and animal corpses during the early stage of decomposition. In Calabria, Italy (as well as in other countries), Formicidae have been observed preying on immature stages of Diptera and other insects, as well as causing irregular scalloped areas of superficial skin loss on human corpses and animal carcasses. We present a case of injuries on a human corpse caused by ant feeding. The macroscopic appearance is described and the results of a histochemical investigation of the skin lesions caused by worker ants are reported for the first time. Th

Bacterial Profiling Reveals Novel "Ca. Neoehrlichia", Ehrlichia, and Anaplasma Species in Australian Human-Biting Ticks.

In Australia, a conclusive aetiology of Lyme disease-like illness in human patients remains elusive, despite growing numbers of people presenting with symptoms attributed to tick bites. In the present study, we surveyed the microbial communities harboured by human-biting ticks from across Australia to identify bacteria that may contribute to this syndrome. Universal PCR primers were used to amplify the V1-2 hyper-variable region of bacterial 16S rRNA genes in DNA samples from individual Ixodes holocyclus (n = 279), Amblyomma triguttatum (n = 167), Haemaphysalis bancrofti (n = 7), and H. longic
