[A body mass index related scale for reconstructive breast reduction].

PURPOSE: Breast reduction is a highly emotional theme and bears conflicting interest groups: 1) women who are suffering from symptomatic macromastia and therefore would wish to have their breast reduction paid by the insurers, irrespective of the amount of resection weight, 2) the insurance companies, who are ready to cover only really medically indicated operations and due to a lack of objective parameters often apply the very strict, arbitrary criterium for a minimum resection weight of 500 g per breast and 3) the surgeons who try to provide a fair, scientific basis for the differentiation b

Body mass index and allograft function in pediatric renal transplantation.

Recent studies indicate that pre-transplant (Tx) obesity and increased body mass index (BMI) after renal Tx in adults are associated with decreased long-term renal allograft survival. This study examined whether obesity prior to renal Tx or the development of obesity within the 1st year after Tx in children is associated with worse allograft function at 1 year post Tx. This is a retrospective review of medical records from 76 pediatric renal allograft recipients between January 1994 and December 2000. Recipients had their renal allograft functioning at 1 year, and had a glomerular filtration r

Adolescent body mass index and infertility caused by ovulatory disorder.

OBJECTIVE: Our aim was to examine the association between body mass index at age 18 and subsequent primary ovulatory infertility. STUDY DESIGN: A nested case-control study was conducted within a cohort of 116,678 female registered nurses residing in 14 U.S. states. Cases comprised 2527 married nulliparous nurses unable to become pregnant for at least 1 year because of ovulatory disorder; controls comprised 46,718 married parous nurses with no history of infertility. The risk of ovulatory infertility for women at different levels of body mass index at age 18 was compared with that for women wh

A predictive nomogram based on triglyceride glucose index to body mass index ratio for low appendicular skeletal muscle mass.

The aim of this study was to investigate risk factors, develop, and assess the predictive nomogram for low appendicular skeletal muscle mass index (ASMI) in middle-aged and elderly populations. A total of 3,209 inpatients were divided into a Training Set (n = 2,407) and a Validation Set (n = 802). A nomogram was developed using R software for internal validation, and external validation was performed using the Validation Set. Gender (male), age, height, weight, triglyceride levels, alanine aminotransferase levels, alcohol consumption, and the triglyceride-glucose index to body-mass index ratio

Body Mass Index-related genetic factors and COPD imaging phenotypes.

RATIONALE: While low body mass index (BMI) is associated with emphysema and obesity is associated with airway disease in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), the underlying mechanisms are unclear. OBJECTIVES: To examine the association between BMI-related genetic variants and emphysema and airway disease imaging phenotypes. METHODS: We aggregated genetic variants from population-based genome-wide association studies to generate a polygenic score of BMI (PGSBMI). We examined associations of the PGSBMI with automated quantification and visual interpretation of computed tomographic emp

Outcomes of Percutaneous Coronary Intervention Stratified by Body Mass Index.

Background The relationship between body mass index (BMI) and outcomes after percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) remains complex. Although obesity is a major risk factor for coronary artery disease, several observational studies have reported comparable or improved outcomes among overweight or obese patients compared with normal-weight patients, a phenomenon described as the "obesity paradox." Whether this paradox persists when patients are stratified across specific BMI categories, particularly among obesity classes, remains incompletely understood. This study evaluated in-hospital outco

Association between body mass index, obesity, and vulvar cancer recurrence.

OBJECTIVE: The objective of this paper is to study the association between obesity and tumor recurrence in patients with vulvar cancer. METHODS: This is a retrospective study including vulvar cancer patients from 2003 to 2022. Our primary outcome was progression-free survival (PFS) stratified by status of obesity, defined as body mass index (BMI) >30.0 kg/m2. RESULTS: Overall, 48 patients were included in the study, with 32 (66.7%) diagnosed at early stages (I-II). The median BMI was 28.0 kg/m2 [interquartile range 24.9-32.3 kg/m2]. There were 13 obese patients (27%), and the median follow-u

Auditory brainstem responses in women: influence of Body Mass Index.

BACKGROUND: The studies on malnutrition/obesity and hearing argued that there may be a relationship between malnutrition/obesity and hearing loss, although many used behavioral measurements. AIMS/OBJECTIVES: To investigate Auditory Brainstem Responses (ABR) in women by considering Body Mass Index (BMI). MATERIAL AND METHODS: A total of 60 females (n = 120 ears) between the ages of 18-40 years participated. All subjects had normal hearing, and they were grouped under three BMI categories (weak, ideal weight and overweight). ABR recorded with Click and CE-Chirp stimuli at 80-60 dB nHL intensit

Cumulative Excess Body Mass Index and MGUS Progression to Myeloma.

IMPORTANCE: Obesity is a risk factor associated with multiple myeloma (MM) and its precursor, monoclonal gammopathy of unknown significance (MGUS). However, it is unclear how cumulative exposure to obesity affects the risk of MGUS progression to MM. OBJECTIVE: To determine the association of cumulative exposure to excess body mass index (EBMI), defined as BMI (calculated as weight in kilograms divided by height in meters squared) greater than 25, with risk of MGUS progression to MM. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This cohort study included patients with MGUS, including immunoglobin G, im

Paradoxıcal effect of body mass index ranges on pedobarographic evaluatıon.

Although there is evidence suggesting that obesity alters plantar pressure distribution, the specific effects of certain body mass index (BMI) ranges on pedobarographic measures in healty individuals has been poorly investigated. A cross-sectional study with 167 healthy participants was conducted to assess plantar pressure changes across 4 BMI ranges: Under/normal weight (NW), overweight (OW), obese (OB), severe obese (SO). Subjects walked on the Footscan® pressure plate at a self-selected speed, and peak plantar pressure (PPP), load rate, and contact area values were recorded. The foot was di

Body Mass Index and Uterine Fibroid Development: A Prospective Study.

OBJECTIVE: Fibroids are hormonally dependent uterine tumors. The literature on adiposity and fibroid prevalence is inconsistent. Previous work usually combined all those with a body mass index (BMI) ≥30 kg/m2 into a single category and relied on clinically diagnosed fibroids, which misclassifies the many women with undiagnosed fibroids. We used a prospective cohort design with periodic ultrasound screening to investigate associations between repeated measures of BMI and fibroid incidence and growth assessed at each follow-up ultrasound. METHODS: The Study of Environment, Lifestyle & Fibroids

Pleural appendages: Description, incidence and relations with body mass index.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Pleural appendages (PA) are portions of extrapleural fat that hang from the chest wall. They have been described on videothoracoscopy, however their appearance, frequency and possible relationship with the amount of patient's fat remain unknown. Our aim is to describe their appearances and prevalence on CT, and determinate whether their size and number is higher in obese patients. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Axial images of 226 patients with pneumothorax on CT chest were retrospectively reviewed. Exclusion criteria included known pleural disease, previous thoracic surgery and s

The relationship between lower extremity amputation and body mass index.

OBJECTIVES: Non-traumatic lower extremity amputation (LEA) is associated with significant morbidity and mortality. Diabetes mellitus (DM) and peripheral vascular disease (PVD) are associated with increased risk for LEA. As such, DM and PVD account for 54% of all LEA's, performed in the United States annually. As obesity is highly associated with both DM and PVD, our study sought to explore the relationship between LEA and obesity defined by BMI. METHODS: Using the National Inpatient Sample (NIS) database, a retrospective review of patients who underwent non-traumatic LEA (LEA) between 2008 an

Body mass index (BMI) does not predict responses to psilocybin.

BACKGROUND: Psilocybin is a serotonin type 2A (5-HT2A) receptor agonist and naturally occurring psychedelic. 5-HT2A receptor density is known to be associated with body mass index (BMI), however, the impact of this on psilocybin therapy has not been explored. While body weight-adjusted dosing is widely used, this imposes a practical and financial strain on the scalability of psychedelic therapy. This gap between evidence and practice is caused by the absence of studies clarifying the relationship between BMI, the acute psychedelic experience and long-term psychological outcomes. METHOD: Data

Serum Metabolomics in PCOS Women with Different Body Mass Index.

Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is the most prevalent endocrine and metabolic disorder, affecting 5-10% of women of reproductive age. It results from complex environmental factors, genetic predisposition, hyperinsulinemia, hormonal imbalance, neuroendocrine abnormalities, chronic inflammation, and autoimmune disorders. PCOS impacts menstrual regularities, fertility, and dermatological complications, and may induce metabolic disturbances, diabetes, and coronary heart disease. Comprehensive metabolic profiling of patients with PCOS may be a big step in understanding and treating the disease. Th

Severe burn injury: Body Mass Index and the Baux score.

OBJECTIVE: The revised Baux score (age total body surface area (TBSA) burned and inhalation injury)) is predictive of mortality in burn patients. Our study objective was to assess whether the addition of body mass index (BMI) to the revised Baux score would be of value. We posited that increasing BMI follows a pattern similar to age and TBSA in the revised Baux score after severe burn injury. METHODS: Patient data from the burn registry was queried for patients admitted between 1/1/2013 to 8/31/2019. Patients 12 years or older with a TBSA of 20% or greater burn were included.
