Twenty patients presenting with 23 carotid body tumors compose this study group. Eleven patients underwent resection of 14 tumors, while nine patients either refused resection or were unresectable. There was one tumor recurrence following resection. Of the patients not having resection, none have experienced morbidity or death. While surgical excision remains the mainstay of treatment for carotid body tumors, those patients not undergoing resection can survive for long periods.

Bowel obstruction by a foreign body is rare. The authors describe the case of a 77-year-old woman who had small-bowel obstruction due to a foreign body 40 years after a transabdominal hysterectomy. A loop of small bowel had herniated through a metal ring and had become necrotic. The ring and involved bowel were excised and the patient's clinical course was uncomplicated. The original purpose of the ring remains a mystery. The time frame between the introduction of a foreign body and the occurrence of symptoms in this case appears to be the longest ever reported.

Volume of carotid bodies was measured morphometrically in rats with experimental lung emphysema or silicosis. The mean volume of the left carotid body was 19.9 +/- (SD) 12.4 in 13 control rats, 30.7 +/- 12.5 in 9 rats with lung emphysema, and 41 +/- 18.9 . 10(6) micrometer 3 in 10 rats with lung silicosis. Physiologic effects of growth hormone (GH) extend beyond the stimulation of linear growth during childhood and adolescence. These effects include building and sustaining lean body mass, facilitating the utilization of fat mass for energy needs, and maintaining bone mineral density. These nongrowth effects of GH appear to be important throughout life. Children and adults with severe GHD demonstrate marked reductions in lean body mass, increases in percent body fat, and subnormal bone mineral density. Although becoming more common, a foreign body in the rectum remains a challenging presentation. This is due to both a lack of clarity of treatment algorithms and established clinical guideline pathways and trying to avoid invasive methods to improve patient outcomes. Aseptic loosening of implants remains the most common reason for revision surgery for hip, knee, or ankle prostheses. Although a great scientific effort has been made to explain the underlying mechanisms it remains poorly understood, complex, and multifactorial. OBJECTIVE: Obsessive attention to healthy eating might paradoxically lead to physical and psychosocial impairments, a potential eating disorder termed orthorexia nervosa (ON).
