Helicobacter pylori (HP) is an infectious pathogen which can easily infringe gastric mucosa. If the body is infected by HP, it can release cytokines, such as TNF-alpha, IL-1 and IL-6. These cytokines can regulate the absorption and transformation of bone, promote the formation of osteoclast, and then cause localized or systemic osteoporosis. HP infection may decrease the level of estrogen and vitamin B12, which is considered as a risk factor for osteoporosis. Helicobacter pylori infection is related with the occurrence of gastritis, peptic ulcer and gastric malignancies, and these diseases and

Severe hypercalcemia is mainly caused by inappropriately high concentrations of compounds which promote bone resorption, in particular PTH, PTHrP, or 1,25 (OH)2D3. The major consequences are impaired central nervous system and kidney function (polyuria/dehydration); the latter, in turn, aggravate hypercalcemia via decreased fluid intake, mobility, and renal calcium clearance. The most common causes of hypercalcemia are primary hyperparathyroidism and tumors, drugs (in particular thiazides, lithium, vitamin D and vitamin A and their derivatives), granulomatous and infectious diseases. BACKGROUND: Austria has been among the main European countries hosting incoming asylum seekers since 2015. Consequently, there was an urgent need to predict any public health threats associated with the arriving asylum seekers. The Department of Surveillance and Infectious Disease Epidemiology at the Austrian Agency for Health and Food Safety (AGES) was mandated to implement a national syndrome-based surveillance system in the 7 reception centers by the Austrian Ministry of Interior and Ministry of Health.
OBJECTIVE: We aimed to analyze the occurrence and spread of infectious diseases among a

Two groups of bone marrow transplant (BMT) recipients with febrile noncardiogenic respiratory failure requiring intensive care unit (ICU) admission, in the early phase of bone marrow transplantation were compared: those who had proven infectious pneumonia and those in whom bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL) failed to establish a diagnosis. Thirty-eight consecutive neutropenic BMT recipients admitted to an ICU with febrile noncardiogenic respiratory failure were enrolled. All of them underwent a BAL with viral, fungal, bacterial, and histopathological examinations. Lung biopsies were performed in non

Here we aim to build up a metagenomics-centered surveillance on the infectious microbiome showing in the fever of unknown origin (FUO) patients. We collected venous blood, bronchoalveolar lavage fluid, cerebrospinal fluid, tissue block, sputum, bone marrow biopsy, and purulent liquid samples from 123 patients. Metagenomic sequencing (mNGS) for both DNA and RNA sequences was performed to profile the total pathogenic microbiome in the samples. A large pool of infectious or conditional infectious bacteria was found, belonging to Enterobacteriaceae, Staphylococcaceae (10.55%), Burkholderiaceae (10

BACKGROUND: Fever of unknown origin (FUO) still remains a diagnostic challenge, while diagnosis may remain obscure for several weeks or months. The role of tissue biopsy is crucial in the diagnostic approach. We report a series of 130 consecutive patients with FUO who had undergone a bone marrow biopsy (BMB).
METHODS: Among 280 consecutive nonimmunocompromised patients hospitalized between 1995 and 2005 for a febrile illness of uncertain cause, lasting at least 3 weeks, with no diagnosis after an appropriate minimal diagnostic workup, 130 underwent BMB.
RESULTS: Overall, a specific diagnosis

Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) perform multiple functions, such as immunomodulation and tissue repair, and they are also capable of differentiation into bone, cartilage, and fat cells. Furthermore, an MSC culture method has been established, and clinical safety is guaranteed; therefore, MSCs can be clinically applied for the treatment of many diseases. MSC treatment for hematological diseases is expected to be effective against refractory acute graft-versus-host disease (GVHD). It is presently used for treating chronic GVHD, preventing GVHD, promoting the engraftment of hematopoietic stem cells

Millions of people are stricken with the degenerative joint disease known as osteoarthritis. Osteoarthritis is associated with biochemical and mechanical processes, and is characterized by loss of articular cartilage and hypertrophy of bone. As cartilage and bone particles are released into the synovial fluid, a variety of biomarkers have been suggested for the analysis of this fluid. Here we have developed a method for isolating bone and cartilage wear particles suspended in the synovial fluid of the hip, knee and ankle joints of humans, based on specific magnetization of collagens I and II.

One-hundred-seventy-five patients in whom bone marrow puncture had been performed at the Department of Infectious Diseases, University Medical Centre, Ljubljana, during the period from 1988 to 1992, were analysed in a retrospective study. In five out of these 175 patients, tick-borne encephalitis virus infection was confirmed by serological tests and in all of them bone marrow puncture was performed in the initial phase of the illness as part of diagnostic work-up in a patient with a febrile illness accompanied by leukopenia and thrombocytopenia. Bone marrow examination revealed minimal reacti

Neuromuscular diseases (NMDs) represent a heterogeneous group of acquired or inherited conditions. Nutritional complications are frequent in NMDs, but they are sometimes underestimated. With the prolongation of survival in patients with NMDs, there are several nutritional aspects that are important to consider, including the deleterious effects of overnutrition on glucose metabolism, mobility, and respiratory and cardiologic functions; the impact of hyponutrition on muscle and ventilatory function; constipation and other gastrointestinal complications; chewing/swallowing difficulties with an i

AIMS: The electronic database of the institute of pathology, Medical University of Innsbruck, was reviewed and patient histories studied to analyse systematically the coincidence of granulomatous reactions and lymphomas in a large patient collective, and to find distinct clinicopathological correlations. Five cases of small lymphocytic lymphoma/chronic lymphocytic leukaemia (CLL) associated with granulomatous reactions in lymph nodes and bone marrow were identified, all clinically associated with signs of progressive disease.
METHODS: Cases were acquired by reviewing an electronic database co

INTRODUCTION: Dental caries is the most widespread chronic infectious disease. Inflammation in pulp tissues caused by dental caries will lead to periapical granulomas, bone erosion, loss of the tooth, and severe pain. Despite numerous efforts in recent studies to develop effective treatments for dental caries, the need for a potent therapy is still urgent.
METHODS: In this study, we applied a gene-based therapy approach by administering recombinant adeno-associated virus (AAV)-mediated Atp6v0d2 (d2) RNA interference knockdown of d2 gene expression to prevent periapical bone loss and suppress

Adult-onset hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis (HLH) is a life-threatening hyperinflammatory syndrome characterized by dysregulated immune activation. Diagnosing HLH poses significant challenges due to its nonspecific clinical presentation, which often mimics infections, malignancies, and autoimmune diseases. Early recognition and prompt initiation of immunosuppressive therapy are crucial, as delayed treatment is associated with a high risk of mortality. We present a unique case of HLH triggered by a combination of Epstein-Barr virus (EBV), Lyme disease, and anaplasmosis, underscoring the comp

The current use of allogeneic bone marrow transplantation in various hematologic diseases is reviewed. Bone marrow transplantation (BMT) involves infusion of bone marrow from a suitable donor into a properly conditioned recipient. Most BMT is allogeneic, in which the donor is genetically dissimilar but shares some common tissue antigens with the recipient. Almost all patients undergoing allogeneic BMT must be "prepared" with high-dose cyclophosphamide to prevent graft rejection. Most patients with hematologic malignancy also receive total body irradiation to eradicate malignant cells located i

Syphilis is a widely investigated infectious venereal disease with varied presentations frequently mimicking other diseases. It progresses in distinct, well-characterised stages: early (primary and secondary), latent, and late (tertiary), each stage having its own unique presentations. However, there has been increasing evidence of atypical presentations. We describe one such presentation of early syphilis in its secondary stage. A man in his late 20s presented with a rash (which is typical of the secondary stage) and with bone pain with multiple lytic lesions (which is rare in the secondary s

Whipple's disease (WD) is a chronic systemic inflammatory disease of infectious origin caused by Tropheryma whipplei (TW). Abdominal pain and recurrent diarrhea are usually the main symptoms leading to the suspicion of a primary bowel disease. Systemic manifestations can mimic hematologic disorders. A 49-year-old man presented with fever, weight loss, long-standing arthralgia, and diarrhea. A duodenal biopsy was unremarkable. Bone marrow histology provided no evidence of a malignant hematological disorder but revealed noncaseating granulomas. TW was detected in the bone marrow trephine by poly

Osteomyelitis is an infectious disease of the bone that primarily affects children. Here we discuss three patients, aged 11-13 years that were diagnosed with osteomyelitis. Despite the fact that in all three patients the infection was caused by the Staphylococcus Aureus bacteria, the clinical presentation and diagnostic results in all three was different. This case report presents various courses of the same disease, each with a slightly different treatment and outcome. Although the incidence of osteomyelitis is decreasing, it is of great importance to consider osteomyelitis as a diagnosis in

Whipple's disease is a rare systemic infection that may mimic hematologic disorders. We report a case initially misdiagnosed as prefibrotic myelofibrosis based on systemic symptoms and bone marrow findings. Further investigations by PCR confirmed Tropheryma whipplei infection. Antibiotic therapy led to full clinical remission and resolution of bone marrow abnormalities. This case highlights the importance of considering infectious etiologies in patients with constitutional symptoms and bone marrow changes, to avoid misdiagnosis and inappropriate management.

Gas is probably the best single radiographic indicator of infection in cattle, especially in and around the digits. With high quality images and a high-intensity light, gas may be detected in small pockets within the soft tissues, effacing bone surfaces, or within joints. This article illustrates the varied radiographic appearances of gas associated with infection, and the radiographic projections that optimize its detection.
