Cross-Sectional Study Evaluating Skin, Hair, Nail, and Bone Disease in Patients with Focal Dermal Hypoplasia.

Focal dermal hypoplasia (FDH) is an X-linked dominant disease characterized by dermal thinning and fat herniation with other ectodermal and mesodermal abnormalities. There is limited literature regarding the symptomatology and progression of skin, hair, and nail disease. The risk of bone fragility has not been explored either. This cross-sectional survey-based study explored these gaps in knowledge and provides direction for future avenues of research in FDH.

An Intramedullary Locking Nail for Standardized Fixation of Femur Osteotomies to Analyze Normal and Defective Bone Healing in Mice.

Bone healing models are essential to the development of new therapeutic strategies for clinical fracture treatment. Furthermore, mouse models are becoming more commonly used in trauma research. They offer a large number of mutant strains and antibodies for the analysis of the molecular mechanisms behind the highly differentiated process of bone healing. To control the biomechanical environment, standardized and well-characterized osteosynthesis techniques are mandatory in mice. Here, we report on the design and use of an intramedullary nail to stabilize open femur osteotomies in mice. The nail

[Unreamed intramedullary nailing as minimal invasive palliative intervention in osteolysis and pathologic fractures of long tubular bones].

Pathological fractures and osteolyses with impending fractures of long bones impose a severe problem in patients with advanced cancer. For palliative treatment between June 1993 and October 1995 intramedullary nailing was performed in 19 patients with 13 femoral, 7 humeral and 1 tibial lesions; AO unreamed nails were used for this purpose (unreamed femur nail UFN with or with spiral blade for femoral lesions and unreamed tibia nail UTN for humeri and tibia). Stabilization was achieved without severe complications; full weight bearing of both femora and humeri (while using crutches) was allowed

The course of treatment in nonunions of long bones: can we predict when exchange nailing may fail?

PURPOSE: Exchange nailing is often used to treat femoral and tibial nonunions. Its success rate varies with reports of 50-100% success. We sought to determine the trajectory of healing and identify factors associated with the failure of exchange nailing in the treatment of nonunion. METHODS: This was a retrospective chart review at two level I trauma centers. Patients with aseptic femoral and tibial nonunions treated with exchange nailing were included. The primary outcome was union prior to or at 1 year following treatment. Treatment failure was defined as lack of union (defined as lack of b

Clinical outcomes of cement gun-assisted intramedullary nailing for femoral bone metastases: a retrospective case series.

BACKGROUND: Surgical stabilization for femoral bone metastases is commonly performed to prevent or treat pathological fractures; however, local tumor progression may result in implant failure and reoperation. Cement gun-assisted intramedullary nailing (CG-IMN) allows extensive polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) filling within the medullary canal, providing enhanced mechanical stability and facilitating early weight-bearing. This study aimed to evaluate the clinical outcomes of CG-IMN for femoral bone metastases. METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed 11 consecutive patients who underwent CG-IMN for

Advancements in Managing Bone Defects with Limb Length Discrepancies with a Motorized Intramedullary Combined Transport and Lengthening Nail.

Large bone defects that coexist with limb length discrepancy present a challenging problem in limb reconstruction. Historically, management has required complex circular fixation constructs, staged procedures, or separate devices to independently address each problem. However, the development of motorized intramedullary nails capable of performing both bone transport and limb lengthening with a single implant represent a paradigm shift. This review traces the evolution of internal bone transport technology from the initial foundational principles of distraction osteogenesis through first gener

Management of Impending and/or Pathologic Fractures of the Proximal Radius in the Setting of Metastatic Bone Disease With an Intramedullary Photodynamic Nail.

Metastatic bone disease of the radius is rare, but the functional loss of an upper extremity can profoundly impact patient quality of life and hinder independent living. When the mechanical stability of the radius is compromised, surgical intervention such as intramedullary (IM) nailing or plating may be considered in combination with radiation therapy (RT) to alleviate pain, control local tumor progression, and provide immediate stability to the bone. There are several limitations to traditional metallic IM nails, such as limited use in adults, complicated postoperative CT planning for RT, th

Factors which can influence elastic stable intramedullary nailing removal in healed bone cysts in children.

Elastic stable intramedullary nailing (ESIN) internal fixation is used clinically to treat pathological fractures of bone cysts in children. However, one of the most important complications was removal difficulty. In this study, we aim to analyse the factors which can influence ESIN removal in healed bone cysts in children. From April 2014 to November 2020, the clinical data of 49 children who underwent elastic stable intramedullary nail removal for pathological fractures of the bone cysts in our hospital were retrospectively analysed. The following data, including age, sex, pathological fract

Orthoplastic management of distal tibia bone infection using Masquelet technique and PRECICE nail: A case report.

The orthoplastic treatment of post-traumatic bone infections is complex and requires a multidisciplinary approach using both orthopedic and plastic surgery principles. Its primary goal is to achieve rapid control of the infection through aggressive debridement of the affected tissue, in order to perform a complete reconstruction of the limb. This allows both its salvage and restoration of function. We present a patient with septic non-union secondary to distal tibia fracture with a bone defect of 7 cm and severe soft tissue injury. The treatment was divided into three stages. First, the infect

Evaluation of Outcome of Exchange Nailing with Autogenous Bone Graft for Treating Aseptic Nonunion of Femoral Shaft Fracture.

Femoral shaft fractures are severe injuries and challenging for both, the patient and the surgeon. This study has been designed to assess the success rate of exchange nailing with autogenous cancellous bone graft for the treatment of non united femoral shaft fractures previously treated by ORIF with intramedullary nail. This quasi experimental study was carried out in the Department of Orthopaedics & Traumatology of Dhaka Medical College Hospital and NITOR from July 2007 to December 2008. Thirteen patients were followed up regularly for at least 1 (one) year after each operation to assess the

Is an Intramedullary Nail a Valid Treatment for Limb-Length Discrepancy After Bone Tumor Resection? Case Descriptions.

One of the most frequent outcomes after resection of bone tumors in children is a limb-length discrepancy. An intramedullary nail is a valid method for lengthening the limb. We report our experience with four cases of limb-length discrepancy in the lower limbs several years after the primary treatment of bone tumor resection and subsequent reconstruction. Two femoral PRECICE® nails (NuVasive, Inc., San Diego, CA) were introduced retrograde and two were introduced in an anterograde manner. All four cases healed and showed a reduction of the limb-length discrepancy, early loading, and complete b

Reamed Intramedullary Nailing has an Adverse Effect on Bone Regeneration During the Distraction Phase in Tibial Lengthening.

BACKGROUND: The lengthening over nail (LON) technique has gained popularity because it enables shorter periods of external fixation, prevents deformities during lengthening, and reduces the risk of refracture after removal of the frame compared with the classic Ilizarov method. However, it is not clear if the violation of endosteal blood supply by reamed intramedullary nailing in the LON technique has a negative effect on bone regeneration or a positive effect by compensatory enhancement of periosteal circulation. QUESTIONS/PURPOSES: The purposes of this study were to (1) compare the amount o

Biomechanical comparison of callus over a locked intramedullary nail in various segmental bone defects in a sheep model.

Humans and food-producing animals are constantly exposed to and affected by stress. As a consequence of stress, the release of stress-related catecholamines, such as norepinephrine (NE) and dopamine (DA), from nerve terminals in the gastrointestinal tract potentiates both the growth and the virulence of pathogenic bacteria. This may lead to the enhancement of gastrointestinal infections in humans or food-producing animals. Compared with foodborne bacterial pathogens such as Escherichia coli and Salmonella spp., less is known about the effect of stress catecholamines on Campylobacter jejuni sub

[Centromedullary nailing of the femur for bone metastasis: clinical and radiological evaluation using the Tokuhashi score in 24 patients].

PURPOSE OF THE STUDY: Pluridisciplinary management of patients with metastasis to the femur is well defined, but the choice between palliative surgery or abstention must be decided on the basis of a few evaluated prognostic criteria. We report a series of 24 cases of metastasis to the weakened or fractured femur which was evaluated with the Tokuhashi score and treated by surgery. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Sixteen women and eight men, mean age 71 years (58-89) underwent centromedullary nailing of the femur. These patients had metastases from breast cancer (n = 13 of the 16 women). Twenty of the 24

Bilateral accessory iliac horns: pathognomonic findings in Nail-patella syndrome. Scintigraphic evidence on bone scan.

Nail-patella syndrome is a rare hereditary (autosomal dominant) disorder, also called hereditary osteo-onychodysplasia and Fong's syndrome. Its incidence is 4.5 per million population in the United States. Patients have a characteristic tetrad of pathologic symptoms including fingernail dysplasia, hypoplastic or absent patellas, radial head dislocation, and iliac horns. Soft-tissue changes and renal dysplasia have also been associated with the syndrome. Iliac horns are bilateral accessory outgrowths consisting of cortex and medulla continuous with the iliac bone. They are located at the site o
