Background: Long-term opioid therapy is a risk factor for low bone mineral density (BMD). However, other factors may also contribute to low BMD. Several studies have examined the variables that might contribute to low BMD in patients receiving opioid replacement therapy (OST). However, to our knowledge, there was no systemic review conducted to address this particular issue. Thus, we reviewed the articles on the factors associated with low BMD in the population of opioid use disorder receiving substitution therapy. Methods: The articles that examined correlates or risk factors of low BMD in OS

We carried out an in vivo study to evaluate the potential usefulness of a novel bioengineered bone substitute for the repair of palate defects in laboratory rabbits, using tissue-engineering methods. Our results showed that the use of a bioengineered bone substitute was associated with more symmetrical palate growth as compared to the controls, and the length and height of the palate were very similar on both sides of the palate, with differences from negative controls 4 months after artificial bone grafting for bone length. The histological analysis revealed that the regenerated bone was well

This study is the first report of a clinical evaluation of an injectable bone substitute (IBS). This IBS was prepared by suspending biphasic calcium phosphate (BCP) particles with diameters ranging between 80 and 200 microm in a water-soluble cellulose polymer carrier phase. It was used for filling bone defects after tooth extractions in 11 patients. The first objective of the study was to investigate the safety of the filler material. The second objective was to investigate the efficacy of the material for filling human tooth sockets and preventing alveolar bone loss. Radiographic density mea

OBJECTIVES: Bone repair and regeneration are important processes for treating bone defects and injuries. However, traditional bone grafts like autografts and allografts have limitations, such as complications at the donor site and immune rejection. As a result, there is growing interest in using polylactic acid (PLA), a biodegradable and biocompatible material, as a synthetic bone substitute. This study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of 3D-printed PLA scaffolds as bone substitutes using a rat model.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: PLA scaffolds with dimensions of 2 × 2 × 4 mm and 2 × 2 × 8 mm were

Pediatric cranioplasty is indicated to repair skull defects with a wide variety of etiologies. The choice of graft material used to fill the defect is of paramount importance to the long-term success of this procedure. A variety of synthetic products have been commercially developed to avoid donor site morbidity. Here, the authors present the case of a 13-year-old boy with cranial Langerhans cell histiocytosis who underwent cranioplasty with a novel, calcium phosphate-based bone graft substitute (Montage). The patient presented 2 years postoperatively with a foreign body giant cell reaction th

This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of a novel calcitonin-loaded calcium phosphate composite bone cement in vitro and in vivo. The novel composite bone cements were composed of NuROs injectable bone graft substitute, type I collagen, and/or salmon calcitonin. The setting time, porosity, wettability, compressive strength, compressive modulus, and crystallographic structures of cement specimens were determined. Degradation rate, calcitonin release rate, and osteoinductivity were assessed in vitro. In addition, osteogenic effect was examined in a rabbit model of femoral defect. The res

BACKGROUND: Barrier membranes and bone substitute are major tools of guided tissue regeneration (GTR) after periodontal disease. Integrity of the periodontal ligament plays a key role in periodontal health, but its functionality fails to be fully re-established by GTR after disease or trauma. Microtissue models suggest an in vivo-like model to develop novel GTR approaches due to its three-dimensionality. This study aims to assess the effects of collagen membranes and bone substitute on cell viability, adhesion and gene expression of regenerative and inflammatory biomarkers by periodontal ligam

Substitution urethroplasty for the treatment of male stricture disease is often accompanied by subsequent tissue fibrosis and secondary stricture formation. Patients with pre-existing morbidities are often at increased risk of urethral stricture recurrence brought upon in-part by delayed vascularization accompanied by overactive inflammatory responses following surgery. Within the context of this study, we demonstrate the functional utility of a cell/scaffold composite graft comprised of human bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stem cells (MSC) combined with CD34+ hematopoietic stem/progenitor ce

It is essential to reduce and reconstruct bony defects adequately in large orbital floor fracture and defect. Among many reconstructive methods, alloplastic materials have attracted attention because of their safety and ease of use. We have used resorbable plates combined with artificial bone substitutes in large orbital floor defect reconstructions and have evaluated their long-term reliability compared with porous polyethylene plate. A total of 147 patients with traumatic orbital floor fracture were included in the study. Surgical results were evaluated by clinical evaluations, exophthalmome

As literature is poor in functional synthetic cranial models, in this study, synthetic handmade models of cranial vaults were produced in two different materials (a urethane resin and a self-hardening foam), from multiple bone specimens (eight original cranial vaults: four human and four swine), in order to test their resemblance to bone structure in behavior, during fracture formation. All the vaults were mechanically tested with a 2-kg impact weight and filmed with a high-speed camera. Fracture patterns were homogeneous in all swine vaults and heterogeneous in human vaults, with resin fractu

Chitosan/nano-hydroxyapatite composites with different weight ratios were prepared through a co-precipitation method using Ca(OH)(2), H(3)PO(4) and chitosan as starting materials. The properties of these composites were characterized by means of TEM, IR, XRD, burn-out test and universal matertial test machine. Additionally, in vitro tests were also conducted to investigate the biodegradability and bioactivity of the composite. The results showed that the HA synthesized here was poorly crystalline carbonated nanometer crystals and dispersed uniformly in chitosan phase and there is no phase-sepa

In a prospective, nonrandomized, multicenter study, 109 patients with bone defects were treated with a surgical grade calcium sulfate preparation as a bone graft substitute. The calcium sulfate pellets were used in place of morselized cancellous bone graft for the treatment of patients with bone defects who usually would require grafting secondary to trauma, periprosthetic bone loss, tumor, or fusion. The calcium sulfate was used alone or mixed with other materials such as bone marrow aspirate, demineralized bone matrix, or autograft. The defects that were treated were contained and were not n

Several biological materials have been analyzed in combination with osteo-inductive growths factors to determine whether such a system can replace bone grafting in surgical practice. Efforts have been aimed at the discovery of the best carriers and delivery systems. We present the results of the surgical treatment of 11 cranio-maxillo-facial defects in 9 patients using a combination of natural coral skeleton (NCS in blocks or granules), human fibrin glue and transforming growth factor beta-1 (TGF-beta 1) as a composite bone substitute. Three patients were initially excluded because of early ex

Simple bone cysts (SBCs) and intraosseous lipoma (IOL) of the calcaneus are rare tumor entities that are primarily diagnosed due to unspecific heel pain, incidental findings, or rarely due to pathological fractures. Compared to traditional open tumor resections, endoscopic resection of these benign tumors aims to minimize surgical morbidity and maximize surgical efficiency without compromising safety. Grafting is regularly performed to reduce the risk of recurrence and stimulate osseous consolidation of the lytic lesion. As the incidence is low and treatment strategies are heterogeneous, there

INTRODUCTION: Chronic osteomyelitis is a serious osteoarticular infection that most often occurs in the long bones, responsible for significant morbidity with the risk of fracture and amputation. Despite advances in both antibiotics and surgical treatment, the probability of recurrence of infection remains at around 20%. Cerament-G (BONESUPPORT AB, Sweden) is a synthetic bone substitute that fills the bone void left by surgery, prevents infection and promotes bone regeneration within this space. Cerament-G also provides the local delivery of high doses of gentamicin over several weeks. Two pro

PURPOSE: To compare various suture anchor designs with and without calcium phosphate (CaP) augmentation in an osteoporotic foam block model and decorticated proximal humerus cadaveric model.
METHODS: This was a controlled biomechanical study, consisting of 2 parts: (1) an osteoporotic foam block model (0.12 g/cc; n = 42) and (2) a matched pair cadaveric humeral model (n = 24). Suture anchors selected were an all-suture anchor, PEEK (polyether ether ketone)-threaded anchor, and a biocomposite-threaded anchor. For each study arm, one half the samples were first filled with injectable CaP and th
