Borderline personality disorder and sexual abuse: A systematic review.

Although sexual abuse (SA) is known to be frequent among borderline personality disorder (BPD) patients, few reviews evaluating that relationship have been published. This systematic review aimed to investigate SA (including adulthood) as a predictor of BPD diagnosis, clinical presentation and prognosis. Studies written in English or Portuguese from January 1997 until January 2017 were identified by searching the following keywords in three international databases: "borderline personality disorder" OR "borderline disorder" AND "sexual abuse" OR "sexual violence" OR "sexual victimization" OR "s

Psychotic symptoms in adolescents with borderline personality disorder features.

Psychotic symptoms have been found to be relatively common among adults with borderline personality disorder (BPD), and to be a marker of BPD severity, but are not recognised in daily clinical practice in these patients. This study is the first to examine the prevalence of psychotic symptoms in 15-18-year olds with BPD features. It was hypothesised that adolescents with full-threshold BPD would have significantly more psychotic symptoms than adolescents with sub-threshold BPD features, and that both these groups would have significantly more psychotic symptoms than adolescents with no BPD feat

Cognitive distortions in anorexia nervosa and borderline personality disorder.

Thought-shape fusion (TSF) is a cognitive distortion associated with eating disorders (ED). A similar distortion, thought-abandonment fusion (TAbF), is assumed to occur in borderline personality disorder (BPD). In this study the specificity of TSF in participants with anorexia nervosa (AN) and TAbF in participants with BPD was examined. 63 patients completed questionnaires assessing the manifestation of trait-TAbF and trait-TSF, as well as relevant psychopathology. Nonparametric conditional inference trees were used to test for cognitive disorder-specificity. Participants with AN exhibited hig

[Auditory verbal hallucinations in patients with borderline personality disorder].

BACKGROUND: Traditionally, auditory verbal hallucinations (AVH) experienced by patients with a borderline personality disorder (BPD) are considered to be rare, to have a 'pseudo'-quality, and to cause little distress. AIM: To provide an overview of studies of the prevalence and phenomenological characteristics of AVHs in patients with a BPD, and of the ensuing degree of suffering. METHOD: We performed a systematic literature search using PubMed and the Ovid database. RESULTS: 27% of patients with a BPD experience AVH. Phenomenologically, these percepts are indistinguishable from those exper

Oscillatory responses to reward processing in borderline personality disorder.

OBJECTIVES: Previous electrophysiological studies have confirmed impaired reward processing in patients with BPD. However, it is not clear which aspects of reward processing are affected and which brain regions are involved. The present study investigated both evoked and induced event-related oscillations (EROs) to feedback events (thought to represent different aspects of feedback processing), and used source localization (sLORETA) to assess activity in two areas known to contribute to reward processing, the dorsomedial prefrontal/anterior cingulate cortex (dmPFC/ACC) and the orbitofrontal co

Pain perception in female adolescents with borderline personality disorder.

Borderline personality disorder (BPD) is a severe and often debilitating psychiatric disorder that begins during adolescence. Core features of BPD are affective dysregulation, dysfunctional self-concepts, and difficulties in social interactive domains. A widely accepted marker for severe emotion dysregulation in adult BPD is decreased pain sensitivity. Until now it is unclear whether this characteristic feature of BPD is already present during adolescence. Thus, this study aims to investigate pain sensitivity in adolescent patients meeting DSM-IV criteria for BPD. 20 female adolescent patients

Altered state and trait disgust in borderline personality disorder.

Clinical experience suggests that the emotion disgust plays an important role in borderline personality disorder (BPD). We investigated 30 female patients with BPD and 30 healthy women who answered different measures of trait disgust, specifically disgust proneness, disgust sensitivity, and self-disgust. Moreover, all participants rated affective facial expressions as well as affective scenes according to perceived or elicited basic emotions. The patients with BPD reported elevated trait disgust, especially for the area of self-disgust. They also rated facial expressions of disgust as more int

Similarities and differences in borderline and organic personality disorder.

INTRODUCTION: Previous research has shown that brain injury patients with Organic Personality Disorder (OPD) may display "borderline" traits due to prefrontal damage, and their personality structure may be unstable and close to a borderline personality organisation. They may have few general neuropsychological dysfunctions but specific executive deficits. Similar deficits have been found in patients with Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD). The objective of this study was to identify differences and similarities between the neuropsychological and personality profiles of BPD and OPD patients.

Prenatal adversity: a risk factor in borderline personality disorder?

BACKGROUND: Patients with borderline personality disorder (BPD) show a high prevalence of early adversity, such as childhood trauma. It has also been reported that prenatal adverse conditions, such as prenatal maternal stress, drug taking, tobacco smoking or medical complications, may be associated with an increased risk of mental disorders in the offspring. Prenatal adversity is investigated here for the first time as a potential risk factor in the diagnosis of BPD. Method A total of 100 patients with a DSM-IV diagnosis of BPD and 100 matched healthy controls underwent semi-structured intervi

Exploring the clinical validity of borderline personality disorder components.

Borderline personality disorder (BPD) is recognized as a complex syndrome, resulting in a heterogeneous diagnostic category. Besides the characteristics of the disorder itself, comorbid disorders play an important role in this complexity. The aim of the study is to analyze the clinical validity of 3 components for BPD Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders criteria--called affective dysregulation, behavioral dysregulation, and disturbed relatedness--investigating differences in patterns of comorbidity. For this purpose, 365 patients with suspected BPD were included in the study.

Adult attachment to transitional objects and borderline personality disorder.

Borderline personality disorder (BPD) is characterized by tumultuous, unstable personal relationships, difficulty being alone, and an inability to self-soothe. This may explain why patients with BPD tend to develop strong attachments to transitional objects such as stuffed animals. Research in hospital settings has linked the use of transitional objects to the presence of BPD. Using a nonclinical community sample (N = 80) we explored the link between attachments to transitional objects and various aspects of personality pathology, as well as to childhood trauma, and parental rearing styles. Neural processing of emotional overinvolvement in borderline personality disorder.

OBJECTIVE: Patients with borderline personality disorder (BPD) fare better clinically if their families are rated as being high in emotional overinvolvement, which is characterized by marked emotionality, anxious concern, and protective behavior. This is not true of patients with disorders such as schizophrenia or major depression. We used functional magnetic resonance imaging methods to explore the link between emotional overinvolvement (EOI) and better clinical outcome in BPD. Specifically, we tested the hypothesis that, unlike healthy controls or people with other psychiatric problems, peop

Neural correlates of emotion processing in borderline personality disorder.

Emotional instability is a hallmark feature of borderline personality disorder (BPD), yet its biological underpinnings are poorly understood. We employed functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) to compare patterns of regional brain activation in BPD patients and healthy volunteers as they process positive and negative social emotional stimuli. fMRI images were acquired while 19 BPD patients and 17 healthy controls (HC) viewed emotion-inducing pictures from the International Affective Pictures System set. Activation data were analyzed with SPM5 ANCOVA models to derive the effects of diagno

Affective instability in borderline personality disorder: experience sampling findings.

Affective instability, defined as repeated, rapid, and abrupt shifts in mood, is considered the core pathology in borderline personality disorder. The temporal pattern of affective instability can be best captured with the experience sampling method-longitudinal assessment of people's affective states as they occur in real time and in their natural environment. A review of the experience sampling studies published to date for borderline personality disorder suggests the following mood variability pattern: intense negative mood, more frequent and abrupt mood changes than healthy controls and pa

Autonomic impairment in borderline personality disorder: a laboratory investigation.

Recent research suggests that emotional dysfunction in psychiatric disorders can be reflected in autonomic abnormalities. The present study examines sympathetic and parasympathetic autonomic nervous system activity in individuals with Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD) before, during, and following a social stressor task. Data were obtained from an analogue sample of participants screening positive for BPD (n=12) and healthy controls (n=28). In general, BPD participants exhibited increased sympathetic activity (indexed by Cardiac Sympathetic Index, CSI; Toichi et al., 1997) and decreased pa

Differential diagnosis of coagulation abnormalities in borderline personality disorder.

We report the case of a 26-year-old woman suffering from borderline personality disorder (BPD), major depression and bulimia nervosa according to DSM-IV who showed unexplained impairment of the vitamin K-dependent coagulation pathway. Subsequently we discuss different manifestations of self damaging behaviour and comorbidities, as well as psychosocial issues potentially leading to coagulation abnormalities or complications in patients with BPD.

Pathological dissociation and neuropsychological functioning in borderline personality disorder.

OBJECTIVE: Transient, stress-related severe dissociative symptoms or paranoid ideation is one of the criteria defining the borderline personality disorder (BPD). Examinations of the neuropsychological correlates of BPD reveal various findings. The purpose of this study was to investigate the association between dissociation and neuropsychological functioning in patients with BPD. METHOD: The performance on an extensive neuropsychological battery of patients with BPD with (n=10) and without (n=20) pathological dissociation was compared with that of healthy controls (n=30). RESULTS: Patients w

[Borderline personality disorder, self-mutilation and suicide: literature review].

INTRODUCTION: Borderline personality disorder (BPD) is a serious public health problem. It is associated with high levels of mental health service utilization, an important degree of psychosocial impairment and a high rate of suicide (10%). BPD is a common psychiatric disorder and the most frequent personality disorders. Approximately, 15 to 50% of psychiatric inpatients and 11% of psychiatric outpatients meet current criteria for BPD. Recurrent suicidal threats, gestures or behaviour or self-mutilation are common in patients suffering from borderline personality disorder. However, despite the

[Childhood trauma in the etiology of borderline personality disorder].

Serious, prolonged intrafamilial childhood sexual abuse is considered to be the main etiological factor in about half of the patients with borderline personality disorder in the USA. Special features of childhood interpersonal trauma leading to the development of borderline personality disorder are the seriousness of the trauma and the fact that it is sexual in nature. Serious intrafamilial childhood abuse can lead not only to the classic post-traumatic stress syndrome, but can influence all aspects of personality development, including the distortion of the sense of identity, self-regulation,

Expressed emotion and clinical outcome in borderline personality disorder.

OBJECTIVE: This longitudinal follow-up study examined the predictive validity of relatives' expressed emotion in a group of patients diagnosed with borderline personality disorder. METHOD: Thirty-five patients with DSM-III-R-diagnosed borderline personality disorder were followed up 1 year after they were discharged from a psychiatric hospital. Clinical outcome was assessed through interviews with patients and their family members. Expressed emotion in the patients' relatives, assessed at the time of the index admission, was then used to predict patients' subsequent clinical outcomes. RESULT
