Yawning?

Since antiquity yawning has attracted a moderate interest among philosophers, psychologists, physiologists, as well as educators, moralists and physicians. Organisms from birds to men and from the womb to the deathbed were found to be displaying it. While sometimes satisfying to the producer, its display is offensive to the lay observer. Hippocrates had it on his lists of useful 'natures.' Aristotle dropped a few words on the matter. Boerhaave elevated its function to the intellect of animals. Haller has commented on its relation to the acoustic system, blood-flow, and baby sleep. Darwin menti

Development of an Indigenous Inventory GMAB (Gambling Motives, Attitudes and Behaviors) for Chinese gamblers: an exploratory study.

Scale development in the extant gambling literature has been dominated by pathological gamblers, but the non- or sub-clinical gamblers have been overlooked. Moreover, most scales are predominantly based on Western samples; only a few of the scales have Chinese versions validated with Chinese samples. A rarely explored niche still exists for the development of an indigenous scale for Chinese gamblers. The current exploratory study made the first step towards such a direction by identifying factors through the construction of an indigenous Gambling Motives, Attitudes and Behavior (GMAB) scale fo

Targeting adolescent risk-taking behaviors: the contributions of egocentrism and sensation-seeking.

Tremendous resources are spent each year developing programs and messages targeting adolescent risk behavior. Adolescents are often reasonably well educated about methods for health promotion such as preventing HIV infection, yet they fail to act accordingly. One widely used individual difference variable, sensation-seeking, has been incorporated in health message design to some extent, but it fails to take development into account. Research on adolescent egocentrism suggests adolescents experience personal fable which can lead to an exaggerated sense of invulnerability. The present study samp

[Psychopathological consequences of confinement].

The psychological effects of isolation have already been described in the literature (polar expeditions, submarines, prison). Nevertheless, the scale of confinement implemented during the COVID-19 pandemic is unprecedented. In addition to reviewing the published studies, we need to anticipate the psychological problems that could arise during or at a distance from confinement. We have gone beyond the COVID-19 literature in order to examine the implications of the known consequences of confinement, like boredom, social isolation, stress, or sleep deprivation. Anxiety, post-traumatic stress diso

Drug abuse in Afghanistan.

1. The two major drugs abused in Afghanistan are hashish and opium. Opium is either smoked or eaten. Hashish is only smoked. 2. Solitary abuse of one single drug, either hashish or opium, is the common feature of drug abuse in Afghanistan. 3. Abuse of other patent drugs as well as multiple drug abuse by the same individual, increasingly common elsewhere, is quite rare. 4. Self-treatment is a major cause of drug abuse in Afghanistan while escape from boredom and lack of work and motivation is another. 5. Hashish as well as opium is commonly abused by people of a low socioeconomical standard. 6.

Only low-arousal emotions matter: grade-dependent mediation of academic emotions between psychological resilience and learning burnout in middle school.

BACKGROUND: Psychological resilience is known to reduce learning burnout, but it remains unclear whether low- versus high-arousal academic emotions mediate this relationship and whether such effects vary across grades. OBJECTIVE: This study examined the mediating roles of academic emotions and tested grade differences. METHOD: A cluster sample of 739 middle school students (grades 7-9) from urban and rural schools completed three validated scales assessing psychological resilience, learning burnout, and academic emotions (positive/negative × high/low arousal). Opioid Message Fatigue in the United States: Prevalence and Associations with Stigma and Policy Support.

BACKGROUND: The opioid crisis has generated widespread public attention and messaging. However, persistent messaging may contribute to message fatigue, i.e., feelings of exhaustion and boredom due to excessive and redundant exposure. This study investigates the prevalence of opioid message fatigue among American adults, its association with individual characteristics, and its connection with opioid use disorder (OUD) stigma and policy support for OUD treatment. METHOD: A nationally representative cross-sectional sample of U.S. household adults aged 18+ (N = 1,022) were surveyed August 7-15, 2

The science of yawning: Exploring its physiology, evolutionary role, and behavioral impact.

Yawning is a ubiquitous physiological phenomenon observed across various species, including humans. Traditionally associated with boredom or drowsiness, yawning encompasses a complex interplay of neurological, physiological, and social factors. This article delves into the multifaceted nature of yawning, examining its evolutionary significance, neurological underpinnings, and physiological functions. The initiation of yawning is primarily regulated by the hypothalamus and brainstem, with neurotransmitters such as dopamine, serotonin, and oxytocin playing critical roles. Anatomically, yawning i

A Review of Recent Advances in Cognitive-Motor Dual-Tasking for Parkinson's Disease Rehabilitation.

BACKGROUND: Parkinson's disease is primarily characterized by the degeneration of motor neurons, leading to significant impairments in movement. Initially, physical therapy was predominantly employed to address these motor issues through targeted rehabilitation exercises. However, recent research has indicated that cognitive training can enhance the quality of life for patients with Parkinson's. Consequently, some researchers have posited that the simultaneous engagement in computer-assisted motor and cognitive dual-task (CADT) may yield superior therapeutic outcomes. METHODS: A comprehensive
