Novel neuroprotection using antioxidant nanoparticles in a mouse model of head trauma.

INTRODUCTION: Free radicals and reactive oxygen species are related to deteriorating pathological conditions after head trauma because of their secondary effects. 2,2,6,6-Tetramethylpiperidine-1-oxyl (TEMPO) scavenges free radicals; however, this molecule is also toxic. Here, we have evaluated the neuroprotective effect of antioxidant nanoparticles, which consisted of a novel core-shell type nanoparticle containing 4-amino-TEMPO, that is, redox-active nitroxide radical-containing nanoparticles (RNPs). METHODS: Institute of Cancer Research mice were subjected to a head-impact procedure, random

Simulative investigation on head injuries of electric self-balancing scooter riders subject to ground impact.

The safety performance of an electric self-balancing scooter (ESS) has recently become a main concern in preventing its further wide application as a major candidate for green transportation. Scooter riders may suffer severe brain injuries in possible vehicle crash accidents not only from contact with a windshield or bonnet but also from secondary contact with the ground. In this paper, virtual vehicle-ESS crash scenarios combined with finite element (FE) car models and multi-body scooter/human models are set up. Post-impact kinematic gestures of scooter riders under various contact conditions

Alveolar recruitment in pulmonary contusion: case report and literature review.

Treatment of pulmonary contusion when adequately established is very simple in most cases. Pathophysiological changes occur as a result of the effects produced by loss of chest wall integrity, accumulation of fluid in the pleural cavity, obstruction of the airways and lung dysfunction. The alveolar recruitment maneuver is the reopening of collapsed lung areas by increasing inspiratory pressure in the airway. The primary objective of this case report was to evaluate the effectiveness of the alveolar recruitment maneuver in a patient with pulmonary contusion. A 33 year old male patient, with a c

Cortico-reticulo-spinal circuit reorganization enables functional recovery after severe spinal cord contusion.

Severe spinal cord contusions interrupt nearly all brain projections to lumbar circuits producing leg movement. Failure of these projections to reorganize leads to permanent paralysis. Here we modeled these injuries in rodents. A severe contusion abolished all motor cortex projections below injury. However, the motor cortex immediately regained adaptive control over the paralyzed legs during electrochemical neuromodulation of lumbar circuits. Glutamatergic reticulospinal neurons with residual projections below the injury relayed the cortical command downstream. Gravity-assisted rehabilitation

Correlation of computed tomography findings and serum brain damage markers following severe head injury.

The objective of our study was to investigate the association between the initial levels of serum S-100B protein and neuron specific enolase and the severity of radiologically visible brain damage and outcome after severe head injury. Admission computed tomography (CT) scans of forty-four patients with severe head injury were analysed. Initial levels of S-100B protein and neuron specific enolase were compared between the different outcome groups at 6 month, the different categories of the Marshall classification, the presence of traumatic subarachnoid haemorrhage, the type of haematoma and the

Development of a finite element human head model partially validated with thirty five experimental cases.

This study is aimed to develop a high quality, extensively validated finite element (FE) human head model for enhanced head injury prediction and prevention. The geometry of the model was based on computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging scans of an adult male who has the average height and weight of an American. A feature-based multiblock technique was adopted to develop hexahedral brain meshes including the cerebrum, cerebellum, brainstem, corpus callosum, ventricles, and thalamus. Conventional meshing methods were used to create the bridging veins, cerebrospinal fluid, skull,

[Intensive care of traumatic brain injury in children].

Traumatic brain injury among other injuries of human body reaches up to 30-50% and, according to the WHO, it grows by 2%. Severe traumatic brain injury (such as severe brain contusion, epidural, subdural and intracerebral hematoma, intracerebral hygroma, diffuse axonal injury) in the structure of general trauma amounts 4-20%. The prognosis of traumatic brain injury mainly depends on the timeliness of the first aid. The therapeutic measures usually begin at the place of the accident or in the ambulance vehicle (hence the clear role of the specialist team). It is advised for children with severe

Convolutional Neural Network-Based Automated Segmentation of the Spinal Cord and Contusion Injury: Deep Learning Biomarker Correlates of Motor Impairment in Acute Spinal Cord Injury.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Our aim was to use 2D convolutional neural networks for automatic segmentation of the spinal cord and traumatic contusion injury from axial T2-weighted MR imaging in a cohort of patients with acute spinal cord injury. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Forty-seven patients who underwent 3T MR imaging within 24 hours of spinal cord injury were included. We developed an image-analysis pipeline integrating 2D convolutional neural networks for whole spinal cord and intramedullary spinal cord lesion segmentation. Linear mixed modeling was used to compare test segmentation results betwe

Glycerol dehydrates oedematous as well as normal brain in dogs.

1. Although the effect of glycerol on reducing intracranial pressure has been widely investigated, only a few studies have reported its dehydrating effect on brain oedema caused by infarction, ischaemia, microembolism and cold injury, but none on traumatic oedema. In this study the effects of glycerol (1 g/kg, i.v. bolus infusion at a rate of 0.04 g/kg per min) on traumatic and cryogenic cerebral oedema and on normal brain were compared in the anaesthetized dog. The tissue water content was measured with the gravimetric method. 2. Oedema resulting from mechanical trauma was initiated 4 h prior

Post-traumatic hydrocephalus after decompressive craniectomy: a multidimensional analysis of clinical, radiological, and surgical risk factors.

Decompressive craniectomy is a key treatment for refractory intracranial pressure after severe traumatic brain injury (TBI). Post-traumatic hydrocephalus (PTH) occurs in 7.6-36% of cases, and early diagnosis significantly improves rehabilitation outcomes. This retrospective study analyzed risk factors for shunt-dependent PTH in 126 TBI patients (93 men, 33 women, median age 53 years). Patients were divided into those requiring shunts and those who did not. Clinical and radiological characteristics, including volumetric measurements and surgical techniques, were assessed using SPSS® Statistics

[Expert evaluation of certain immune system disturbances after mild traumatic brain injuries].

The authors present results of evaluation of immune disorders in 47 patients presenting with brain concussion (BC) and in 28 subjects with mild cerebral contusion (MCC). It was shown that in patients of the former group all immune characteristics were totally restored within 3 weeks after the injury. In the latter group, the clinical picture of secondary immunodeficiency with impaired parameters of the immune status persisted for at least 28 days after the injury. It is concluded that the dynamics of immune system disturbances after a traumatic brain injury may be used as an objective criterio

Penetrating brain injury with nasal entry by a plastic stick. Case report.

A case of a 52-year-old male presented with an unusual penetrating brain injury with nasal entry. At admission he had erythema of periorbital soft tissue in the left eye and epistaxis. His neurological condition was lethargic (Glasgow Coma Scale of 13) with nonfluent aphasia. Computed tomography scan revealed intracranial contusion hematoma in the left frontal lobe and fracture of the left frontal base, which were treated surgically. At the 6-month follow-up he still showed nonfluent aphasia. Disturbances, mostly cognitive, were noted on his psychological tests. A survey of the literature reve

Very-late-onset adrenoleukodystrophy: possible precipitation of demyelination by cerebral contusion.

We report the clinical history, neuroradiology, and autopsy findings in a patient with very late onset, at age 57, of adrenoleukodystrophy (ALD) presenting with dementia, hemianopia, and gait apraxia. Open brain biopsy, elevated plasma very-long-chain fatty acids, and autopsy confirmed the diagnosis of ALD. Demyelinative lesions were most extensive at the site of a recent cerebral contusion. CNS trauma may have precipitated or accelerated demyelination in this patient carrying the ALD gene.

[Early post-traumatic epilepsy in childhood: significance and short term prognosis (author's transl)].

In the last five years, 244 children with head trauma were observed. An early post-traumatic epilepsy was present in 11% of the patients. This complication was more frequent in children less than six years of age or presenting a previous neurological history. Early posttraumatic epilepsy was rarely associated with brain concussion and frequently with cerebral contusion. An intracranial haematoma was not encountered in the absence of the classical signs of expanding space occupying lesion.

Left ventricular-right atrial communication with third-degree atrioventricular block after thoracic trauma.

BACKGROUND: Intracardiac shunts are rare but very serious lesions after non-penetrating chest trauma. Their diagnosis is difficult. This pathology often goes unrecognized in the context of multiple trauma. CASE REPORT: We report the case of a 21-year-old man involved in a motor vehicle crash who presented with multiple injuries including myocardial contusion, severe brain injury, multiple pelvic fractures, closed femur fracture, bilateral lung contusion with a right pneumothorax, and intra-abdominal injuries. Three days after the initial event, a new cardiac murmur and complete heart block ap

Low signal intensity and increased anisotropy on magnetic resonance imaging in the white matter lesion after head trauma: unrecognized findings of diffuse axonal injury.

We report on a four-year-old girl with head trauma caused by a motor vehicle accident. She presented with delirium, oculomotor palsy and ptosis in her left eye, left hemiparesis, and pyramidal signs in all extremities. Computed tomography on the day of admission showed diffuse cerebral edema with right-sided predominance. Magnetic resonance images on day 3 of admission showed lesions of diffuse axonal injury and contusion in the corpus callosum and right occipital and bilateral temporal lobes. There was a low-intensity lesion in the white matter of the right hemisphere on T2-weighted images, f

Early prediction of progressive cerebral contusion using a deep transfer learning-enhanced multimodal nomogram.

OBJECTIVES: We developed a multimodal fusion model combining clinical data and deep transfer learning for early progressive cerebral contusion (PCC) prediction, providing precise clinical support for treatment decisions. METHODS: Using a single-center retrospective cohort design, we analyzed 196 cerebral contusion patients between January 2022 and June 2024. PCC was characterized by a contusion volume increase of at least 30 % on CT scans within 24 h. Patients were categorized into a progression group (n=98) and a non-progression group (n=98). The dataset was split into a training coh59 parti

Diffuse brain injury in the immature rat: evidence for an age-at-injury effect on cognitive function and histopathologic damage.

Diffuse axonal injury is a significant component of the pathology of moderate-severe pediatric traumatic brain injury in children less than 4 years of age, and is associated with poor cognitive outcome. However, cognitive deficits or gross histopathologic abnormalities are typically not observed following moderate-severe diffuse brain injury in the immature (17-day-old) rat. In order to test whether the age of the immature animal may influence post-traumatic outcome, non-contusive brain trauma was induced in post-natal day (PND) 11 or 17 rats. Brain injury in the PND11 rat, but not in the PND1
