Different forms of traumatic brain injuries cause different tactile hypersensitivity profiles.

Chronic complications of traumatic brain injury represent one of the greatest financial burdens and sources of suffering in the society today. A substantial number of these patients suffer from posttraumatic headache (PTH), which is typically associated with tactile allodynia. Unfortunately, this phenomenon has been understudied, in large part because of the lack of well-characterized laboratory animal models. We have addressed this gap in the field by characterizing the tactile sensory profile of 2 nonpenetrating models of PTH. We show that multimodal traumatic brain injury, administered by a

Numerical simulation and analysis of midfacial impacts and traumatic brain injuries.

BACKGROUNDS: The maxillofacial region is the exposed part of the human body and is susceptible to injury due to the limited protective equipment. Due to anatomic proximity of the maxillofacial skeleton and cranium, the force can be transmitted directly to the brain in case of maxillofacial impact, maxillofacial injuries are often accompanied with craniocerebral trauma. Therefore, it is necessary to study the biomechanical response mechanism of trauma to improve prevention of traumatic brain injury (TBI). METHODS: To investigate the biomechanical mechanism between the two injuries, a finite el

Emergency department management of traumatic brain injuries: A resource tiered review.

INTRODUCTION: Traumatic brain injury is a leading cause of death and disability globally with an estimated African incidence of approximately 8 million cases annually. A person suffering from a TBI is often aged 20-30, contributing to sustained disability and large negative economic impacts of TBI. Effective emergency care has the potential to decrease morbidity from this multisystem trauma. OBJECTIVES: Identify and summarize key recommendations for emergency care of patients with traumatic brain injuries using a resource tiered framework. METHODS: A literature review was conducted on clinic

The association between traumatic dental and brain injuries in American children.

BACKGROUND/AIM: It is crucial that dentists who treat traumatic dental injuries rule out concomitant brain injuries. Despite anatomic proximity, controversy exists regarding association between facial trauma and head injury. The aim of this study was to examine the association between dento-alveolar trauma (DAT) and traumatic brain injuries (TBI) using a national dataset of emergency department (ED) visits. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Nationwide Emergency Department Sample (NEDS) data, one of the Healthcare Cost and Utilization Project (HCUP) datasets, were analyzed. Encounters of patients age 0-18

Traumatic brain injuries in a paediatric neurosurgical unit: A Queensland experience.

Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is a leading cause of morbidity and mortality in children with a broad injury spectrum and associated continuum in the level of care required. A dearth of data exists regarding children requiring inpatient neurosurgical admission following TBI. A retrospective study of children 0-16 years-old admitted to the neurosurgical unit of a level-1 paediatric trauma hospital in Queensland, Australia following TBI was conducted focusing on the demographics, clinical characteristics, and management of these patients to guide those involved in their management, and identify ar

The endovascular treatment strategies of cerebrovascular injuries in traumatic brain injury.

Vasculature injury occurs rarely in traumatic brain injury but increases lifetime risk of ischemic or hemorrhage stroke. The diverse and nonspecific clinical manifestations make the diagnosis and treatment of these injuries highly challenging. With advancements in device design, endovascular treatments have become widely adopted, playing an increasingly vital role in the management of vascular diseases. The purpose of this review is to introduce and summarize endovascular treatments of traumatic cerebrovascular injury and other related pathological states after traumatic brain injury. Given th

Mild Traumatic Brain Injuries and Risk for Affective and Behavioral Disorders.

OBJECTIVES: Recent studies document an association between mild traumatic brain injuries (mTBIs) in children and postinjury psychiatric disorders. However. these studies were subject to limitations in the design, lack of long-term follow-up, and poorly defined psychiatric outcomes. This study determines the incidence and relative risk of postinjury new affective and behavior disorders 4 years after mTBIs. METHODS: A cohort study of mTBI cases and matched comparisons within an integrated health care system. The mTBI group included patients ≤17 years of age, diagnosed with mTBI from 2000 to 201

An overview of mild traumatic brain injuries and emerging therapeutic targets.

The majority of traumatic brain injuries (TBIs), approximately 90%, are classified as mild (mTBIs). Globally, an estimated 4 million injuries occur each year from concussions or mTBIs, highlighting their significance as a public health crisis. TBIs can lead to substantial long-term health consequences, including an increased risk of developing Alzheimer's Disease, Parkinson's Disease (PD), chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE), and nearly doubling one's risk of suicide. However, the current management of mTBIs in clinical practice and the available treatment options are limited. There exists

Characteristics of traumatic brain injuries sustained among veterans seeking homeless services.

This hypothesis-generating research describes the characteristics of traumatic brain injuries (TBIs) sustained among 229 Veterans seeking homeless services. Nearly all participants (83%) had sustained at least one TBI prior to their first episode of homelessness. Among participants with a TBI, assaults, transportation-related accidents, and falls were the most common causes of these injuries. Thirty percent of individuals sustained injuries with severity levels that would be expected to be associated with ongoing TBI-related deficits. Forty-three percent of the Veterans sustained at least one

Cerebellar Volumes Are Smaller in Veterans with PTSD and a History of Mild Traumatic Brain Injury, but Not Mild Traumatic Brain Injury Alone.

Mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI), a common health burden among combat veterans, has been associated with alterations in brain structure. Moreover, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), frequently comorbid with mTBI, is linked to smaller cerebellum volumes; however, little is known about whether mTBI (absent comorbid psychiatric symptoms) similarly affects cerebellar structure. The cerebellum may play a central role in common postconcussive symptoms due to its contributions to cognitive and emotional functions. In a sample of 122 combat veterans, we examined whether total cerebellum volumes

Mortality Among Veterans Following Traumatic Brain Injury: A Veterans Administration Traumatic Brain Injury Model System Study.

Few studies have examined long-term mortality following traumatic brain injury (TBI) in a military population. This is a secondary analysis of a prospective, longitudinal study that examines long-term mortality (up to 10 years) post-TBI, including analyses of life expectancy, causes of death, and risk factors for death in service members and veterans (SM/V) who survived the acute TBI and inpatient rehabilitation. Among 922 participants in the study, the mortality rate was 8.3% following discharge from inpatient rehabilitation. The mean age of death was 54.5 years, with death occurring on avera

Multimodal Characterization of the Late Effects of Traumatic Brain Injury: A Methodological Overview of the Late Effects of Traumatic Brain Injury Project.

Epidemiological studies suggest that a single moderate-to-severe traumatic brain injury (TBI) is associated with an increased risk of neurodegenerative disease, including Alzheimer's disease (AD) and Parkinson's disease (PD). Histopathological studies describe complex neurodegenerative pathologies in individuals exposed to single moderate-to-severe TBI or repetitive mild TBI, including chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE). However, the clinicopathological links between TBI and post-traumatic neurodegenerative diseases such as AD, PD, and CTE remain poorly understood. Here, we describe the me
