Cause-specific mortality in long-term survivors of retinoblastoma.

BACKGROUND: Subsequent malignant neoplasms are a major cause of premature death in survivors of hereditary retinoblastoma. Radiotherapy further increases the risk of death. Mortality information is limited among long-term survivors who were irradiated for hereditary retinoblastoma. METHODS: We examined cause-specific mortality among 1854 retinoblastoma survivors who were diagnosed from January 1, 1914, through December 31, 1996, at two US institutions. Standardized mortality ratios (SMRs) were calculated by use of US mortality data to estimate expected numbers of deaths. The relative rates (R

Dynamics of metabolic changes in intracranial metastases and distant normal-appearing brain tissue after stereotactic radiosurgery: a serial proton magnetic resonance spectroscopy study.

The present study evaluated the dynamics of metabolic changes in intracranial metastases and distant normal-appearing brain after stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS). Forty neoplasms were evaluated with single-voxel proton magnetic resonance spectroscopy ((1)H-MRS) both before and after treatment. From one to six examinations (median, 3) were done in each individual case during follow-up. At the time of each investigation additional (1)H-MRS was obtained from the normal-appearing brain distant from the radiosurgical target. Investigated metabolites included N-acetylaspartate (NAA), choline-contain

Expression of the vascular permeability factor/vascular endothelial growth factor gene in central nervous system neoplasms.

Expression of the vascular permeability factor/vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGPF) gene was investigated in human central nervous system (CNS) neoplasms and normal brain. Adsorption of capillary permeability activity from human glioblastoma multiforme (GBM) cell conditioned medium and GBM cyst fluids by anti-VEGPF antibodies demonstrated that VEGPF is secreted by GBM cells and is present in sufficient quantities in vivo to induce vascular permeability. Cloning and sequencing of polymerase chain reaction-amplified GBM and normal brain cDNA demonstrated three forms of the VEGPF coding reg

[Symptomatic Epilepsy].

The notion of symptomatic epilepsy was historically reviewed. The structural etiologies of epilepsy include cerebrovascular diseases, neurodegenerative diseases, neoplasms, and traumatic brain injuries. Infections are the most common etiology worldwide. Metabolic epilepsy directly results from a known or presumed metabolic disorder. Immune epilepsy occurs because of autoimmune-mediated central nervous system inflammation.

Solitary dural plasmacytoma with parenchymal invasion.

Primary solitary dural plasmacytoma is an uncommon neoplasm of plasma cell. The clinical presentation and neuroradiological findings of these tumors may be deceptive and resemble to the other most prevalent brain tumors. Solitary plasmacytoma mostly shows a benign behavior and malignant features like local invasion is so rare. We describe the case of parenchymal brain involvement by solitary dural plasmacytoma.

Case Report: Clinical and magnetic resonance imaging findings in intracranial hemangiosarcoma in a cat.

Hemangiosarcoma (HSA) is a highly malignant tumor of endothelial origin that is infrequently reported in cats, accounting for less than 2% of nonhematopoietic neoplasms. Feline HSA is typically classified into dermal and visceral subtypes, both of which exhibit metastatic potential. While HSA is the tumor most commonly reported to metastasize to the brain in dogs, intracranial involvement in cats remains rare, with only one previously documented metastatic case. This case report details the clinical presentation, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) features, histopathological findings, and gross

A rare, giant, anaplastic oligodendroglioma.

Oligodendroglioma, the third most common glioma, accounts for 5% of primary brain tumors and around 20% of all glial neoplasms. They are quite uncommon in children. Here, we aimed to show an unusual case of a 9-year-old boy developing a huge anaplastic oligodendroglioma. A high-grade astrocytoma-like supratentorial tumor was discovered by a sophisticated brain scan employing magnetic resonance imaging. The tumor was identified by histopathology as an anaplastic oligodendroglioma. Anaplastic oligodendroglioma should be considered while making the differential diagnosis of high-grade astrocytoma

Neoplastic Parkinsonism: An illustrative case report.

Non-Hodgkin's lymphoma of T-cell types are rare neoplasms. Central nervous system metastasis is unusual. We are reporting a patient with peripheral T-cell lymphoma unspecified who had extra nodal metastasis into the brain that manifested with extrapyramidal dysfunction. The clinical presentation was exceptional in that the course was indolent and patient had no overt extra neural manifestations of malignancy for nearly 3 years after the onset of Parkinsonism. Striking brain imaging late in the disease supported by pathological findings enabled the diagnosis of this rare condition.

Case of the month. April 1996--pituitary tumor.

A 20 year old man presented with intermittent diplopia and difficulty focusing his leftward gaze during the past month. His past medical history was only significant for a dermoid cyst in the posterior fossa which was removed at age 10. MRI scans demonstrated a perisellar mass, eroding the sphenoid and surrounding the right carotid artery as well as extending into the sella. A transsphenoidal endoscopic resection was performed. The tumor was diagnosed as a germinoma (seminoma). Most germinomas in the brain arise in the pineal, however, germ cell neoplasms (including teratomas, germinomas and n

Rare pathological variants and presentations of primary central nervous system lymphomas.

Primary central nervous system lymphoma (PCNSL) is a rare form of primary brain neoplasm, accounting for less than 3% of all primary brain tumors. Ninety percent of cases involve a large B-cell lymphoma that presents as a homogeneously enhancing lesion or lesions, typically deep-seated in the brain parenchyma. The authors describe unusual pathological forms of PCNSLs, including low-grade, T-cell, and Burkitt types, and also rare presentations such as neurolymphomatosis and pituitary lymphomas.

The burden of childhood and adolescent cancers in North Africa and the Middle East (NAME) region: findings from the Global Burden of Disease study 2019.

INTRODUCTION: Despite the significant burden of childhood and adolescent cancers, no specific studies recently discussed the burden of cancer in this group in the North Africa and the Middle East (NAME) region. Therefore, we aimed to study the burden of cancers in this group in this region. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We retrieved the Global Burden of Disease (GBD) data for children and adolescent cancers (0-19 years old) in the NAME region from 1990 to 2019. 21 types of neoplasms were grouped as "neoplasms", comprising 19 specific cancer groups as well as "other malignant neoplasms" and "other ne

Large haemorrhage within glioblastoma mimicking haemorrhagic stroke and coexistance of meningioma: a case of collision tumours.

Intracranial collision tumours are rare pathologies in which two distinct neoplasms are found in the same location. We present an unusual case of an intracranial collision tumour composed of meningothelial meningioma (CNS WHO G1) and glioblastoma (IDH-wildtype, CNS WHO G4). This collision tumour was found in a 64-year-old man. This patient was hospitalized urgently due to left-sided hemiparesis. The computed tomography (CT) revealed large multilobar intracranial haemorrhage located in the right hemisphere. The history of hypertension and obesity pointed to the misdiagnosis of a typical haemorr

Risk of hematologic malignant neoplasms from head CT radiation in children and adolescents presenting with minor head trauma: a nationwide population-based cohort study.

OBJECTIVES: The carcinogenic risks of CT radiation in children and adolescents remain debated. We aimed to assess the carcinogenic risk of CTs performed in children and adolescents with minor head trauma. METHODS: In this nationwide population-based cohort study, we included 2,411,715 patients of age 0-19 with minor head trauma from 2009 to 2017. We excluded patients with elevated cancer risks or substantial past medical radiation exposure. Patients were categorized into CT-exposed or CT-unexposed group according to claim codes for head CT. The primary outcome was development of hematologic m

Issues in developing drugs for primary brain tumors: barriers and toxicities.

Drug development in neuro-oncology remains a challenge for neoplasms of the central nervous system (CNS). Drugs can be administered peripherally (i.e., oral or intravenous) or locally (into the tumor or the adjacent neuropil). Each of these routes has advantages and disadvantages. Like the treatment for non-CNS cancers, peripheral side effects are encountered (i.e., diarrhea, myelosuppression, rash); however, there also may be neural-specific side effects for patients that may be acute or delayed (i.e., seizures, somnolence, hearing loss). The nervous system is also a privileged site protected

An unusual intracerebral connective tissue mass.

A sharply circumscribed, vascular, connective tissue mass which replaced the cortex of several adjoining cerebral gyri is described. The histology of the lesion differs from that of previously reported central nervous system maldevelopments and neoplasms. However, there are a number of similarities to the pathology found in late phases of syphilitic "colloid" or "hyaline" degeneration of the brain.

Roles of Valproic Acid in Improving Radiation Therapy for Glioblastoma: a Review of Literature Focusing on Clinical Evidence.

Glioblastoma (GBM) is the most common and aggressive type of primary brain neoplasm. The current standard therapy for GBM consists of maximal surgical resection within safe limits, followed by radiation therapy (RT) and chemotherapy with temozolomide. Despite advances in treatment, the prognosis of GBM remains poor. Epileptic seizure is one of the most common symptoms in patients with GBM. Valproic acid (VPA), a histone deacetylase inhibitor, is often used as an anti-epileptic drug in patients with brain neoplasms due to its effectiveness and low toxicity profile. Several in vivo and in vitro
