Satiety effects of psyllium in healthy volunteers.

Controlling hunger between meals is a challenge for many individuals. This manuscript comprises 2 sequential clinical trials investigating the effects of psyllium (Metamucil) on satiety, both using a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled cross-over design. The first study determined the effects of 3.4 g, 6.8 g, and 10.2 g of psyllium taken before breakfast and lunch for 3 days. The second study determined the effects of 6.8 g (taken before breakfast and lunch on Days 1 and 2 and before breakfast on Day 3) on the satiety of participants receiving an energy restricted meal in the morning

Improving the nutritional quality of charitable meals for homeless and vulnerable adults. A case study of food provision by a food aid organisation in the UK.

The prevalence of homelessness in the UK is rising, and demand for food aid through charitable meal services has increased. Charitable services make a substantial contribution to the food and nutrient intake of vulnerable people, and thus offer a platform for dietary improvement. This study examined food provision by a large charitable organisation in a major UK city. It had several objectives: Firstly to quantify nutritional composition of breakfast and lunch meals, secondly to understand factors that influence the composition of menus and meals, and thirdly to determine whether, within the c

Effects of caloric intake timing on insulin resistance and hyperandrogenism in lean women with polycystic ovary syndrome.

In women with PCOS (polycystic ovary syndrome), hyperinsulinaemia stimulates ovarian cytochrome P450c17α activity that, in turn, stimulates ovarian androgen production. Our objective was to compare whether timed caloric intake differentially influences insulin resistance and hyperandrogenism in lean PCOS women. A total of 60 lean PCOS women [BMI (body mass index), 23.7±0.2 kg/m²] were randomized into two isocaloric (~1800 kcal; where 1 kcal≈4.184 J) maintenance diets with different meal timing distribution: a BF (breakfast diet) (980 kcal breakfast, 640 kcal lunch and 190 kcal dinner) or a D (

Meal timing and frequency implications in the development and prognosis of chronic kidney disease.

Patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) have a higher risk of death than the general population, the main cause being cardiovascular disease (CVD). Nutrition plays a key role in the prevention and treatment of CVD and kidney diseases. Currently, new evidence reinforces the importance of specific foods and general dietary patterns rather than isolated nutrients for cardiovascular risk. In addition, dietary patterns and healthy eating habits seem extremely relevant in decreasing risk factors. Epidemiologic and clinical intervention studies have suggested that late-night dinner and skipping br

Hourly fetal urine production rate in the fasting and the postprandial state of normal and diabetic pregnant women.

OBJECTIVE: To examine whether maternal meal ingestion affects fetal urine production in normal and diabetic pregnancies and whether fetal urine production is increased in diabetic pregnancy. METHODS: The hourly fetal urine production rate was measured before and after breakfast in 17 fetuses of diabetic mothers and 14 of women with normal glucose tolerance. The rate was calculated by taking serial measurements of fetal bladder volume at 2-3-minute intervals by ultrasonography. RESULTS: In the control group, the hourly fetal urine production rate was significantly greater during the 2 hours a

The influence of food on the pharmacokinetics of itraconazole in patients with superficial fungal infection.

Itraconazole in a new, orally active triazole, which is related to ketoconazole and which is active against dermatophytes and Candida and Cryptococcus organisms. It is more potent than ketoconazole, is better absorbed with food, and does not suppress testosterone or cortisol synthesis. In previous studies, daily 200 mg doses of itraconazole for 5 days cleared 80% of cases of pityriasis versicolor, and 90% of dermatophyte infections were cleared by daily 100 mg doses administered for 1 month. Twenty patients with superficial dermatophyte, Candida albicans, and pityriasis versicolor infections w

The effect of meals at different mealtimes on blood pressure and symptoms in geriatric patients with postprandial hypotension.

BACKGROUND: The variability of postprandial hypotension (PPH) during the day in elderly patients is unknown. We examined the effect of meals administered at different mealtimes on postprandial blood pressure (BP) responses in geriatric patients. METHODS: In 14 geriatric patients (6 men and 8 women, aged 66-97) previously diagnosed with PPH, standardized liquid test meals were given in random order at breakfast, lunchtime, or dinnertime on 3 separate days. Systolic BP (SBP), diastolic BP (DBP), and heart rate (HR) were measured with an ambulatory BP device every 10 minutes from 20 minutes befo

In vitro gastric emptying characteristics of konjac glucomannan with different viscosity and its effects on appetite regulation.

Konjac glucomannan (KGM) is associated with the satiety-enhancing property by imparting the food matrix with high viscosity. In the present study, rheology tests on KGM sol with different viscosities were conducted to understand its flow behavior as they presented in the mouth and stomach, and the in vitro gastric emptying characteristics of KGM were examined with a human gastric simulator. Then, their effects on subjective appetite, glycemia, and appetite-related hormones (insulin, GLP-1, PYY3-36, CCK-8, ghrelin) response were investigated by conducting a randomized, single-blind, crossover t

Identifying Eating Occasion-Based Opportunities to Improve the Overall Diets of Australian Adolescents.

Adolescents in Australia have a poor dietary intake, leading to large numbers of them being at risk for inadequate intake of micronutrients, and excessive intake of less healthful dietary components. This study examined dietary intakes at multiple eating occasions to identify opportunities for more targeted recommendations and strategies to improve dietary intakes among adolescents. Data from the first 24-h recall of 14-18 years old in the 2011-2012 National Nutrition and Physical Activity Survey were analysed (n = 772). Participant-defined eating occasions were classified as breakfast, lunch,

[Childhood obesity in Spain and associated factors].

Childhood obesity is an important public health problem, also in Spain. The ALADINO study, in the context of the COSI strategy of the WHO European office, monitors the weight status of Spanish schoolchildren aged 6 to 9 years, and analyzes the associated factors. Data from the 2019 wave indicate that 23.3 % of schoolchildren are overweight, and 17.3 % are obese. A high percentage of schoolchildren eat breakfast regularly, although breakfast quality can be improved. The frequency of consumption of fruits and vegetables is low, even lower than that of other countries participating in the COSI st
