Between 1974 and 1993, 22 patients with bronchogenic cysts were operated on in our hospital; there were 14 men and 8 women, ranging in age from 11 to 62 years. The cyst locations were mediastinal in 13 (59.1%) and intrapulmonary in 9 (40.9%). There were symptoms (chest pain and recurrent bronchiolitis) in 20 patients (91%). The preoperative complications included infection in the lung and in the cyst and dysphagia due to esophageal compression. Chest pain was the main symptom in mediastinal cyst and recurrent infection of lung in intrapulmonary cyst. Plain chest radiograms showed that a round

A 73-year-old man with a right aortic arch was admitted because of stridor and dyspnea. We diagnosed a cervico-mediastinal cyst associated with bilateral recurrent laryngeal nerve palsy. Median sternotomy revealed a cystic tumor located in the esophageal wall. Microscopic examination of the resected cyst showed cartilage, smooth muscle and mucous gland, so the final diagnosis was bronchogenic cyst. The bilateral recurrent laryngeal nerve palsy was caused by chronic pressure from the cyst. Mediastinal cysts should be found and treated as early as possible, because these cysts may sometimes caus

Bronchogenic cysts are congenital anomalies of the bronchial tree that are often asymptomatic at presentation in adults. Management of asymptomatic bronchogenic cyst in this population remains controversial. Eighteen patients with bronchogenic cysts were treated at our institution since 1975. At initial presentation, 10 patients (56 percent) were asymptomatic and 8 (44 percent) were symptomatic. Cough and pain were the most frequent symptoms. Two patients presented with potentially serious complications, one with respiratory distress from airway compression and the other with infection and air

A congenital dermoid together with a bronchogenic cyst of the tongue is extremely rare. The diagnosis made in this case of a 1-year-old boy was "teratoid cyst of the tongue". A surgical exploration was performed under general anaesthesia via a midline sagittal glossotomy. The tumour was completely dissected and excised, the microscopical examination of the surgical specimen revealed multiple cystic cavities lined by a keratinized squamous epithelium with skin appendages and fatty tissue. Others were composed of cylindrical, ciliated epithelial cells of respiratory type. This is the third repor

Lung bronchogenic cyst may be infected and present with symptomatology and chest radiological findings compatible with an infected lung cyst, including pulmonary hydatid cyst. We describe a case of a 5-year-old girl with a symptomatic solitary mass in the right lower lobe that was initially treated as a hydatid cyst. Eventually, a lobectomy was performed, and a final diagnosis done on pathology showed an infected congenital bronchogenic cyst.

Bronchogenic cysts represent about 10 p. 100 of all surgical tumours of the mediastinum. They can never be diagnosed with absolute certainty prior to the operation, but when they arise in their typical sites, they can be suspected with a high probability. However, they can occur in very atypical sites, in which case the diagnosis remains very hypothetical until the operation. The authors report a case of a cyst which developed under the diaphragmatic pleura, in direct contact with the dome of the diaphragm and attached to the mediastinum by a fine vascular pedicle which inserted in the root of

Bronchogenic cysts, a subgroup of foregut duplication cysts, are rare congenital malformations of ventral foregut development. These cysts can be found ectopically along the entire developmental pathway of the foregut. Less than 1% of bronchogenic cysts are found in the oral cavity, with fewer than 10 cases previously reported in the literature. These lesions typically present asymptomatically shortly after birth but have the potential to cause respiratory and/or feeding difficulties. Treatment is surgical excision, and histopathology is ultimately required to reach a definitive diagnosis and

BACKGROUND: Bronchogenic cyst is a rare congenital developmental abnormality of the anterior bowel. Peri-pancreatic bronchogenic cyst (PBC) is extremely rare, when only a few cases reported worldwide. Diagnosis of PBC is difficult due to the lack of specific clinical features and symptoms, laboratory and imaging findings. Currently, the diagnosis of PBC mainly relies on the comprehensive judgment of multidisciplinary collaboration, combined with clinical manifestations, imaging features and pathological verification. Most bronchogenic cysts are benign and the long-term survival rate after comp

Bronchogenic cysts, first described in 1859, are rare congenital cystic malformations of the respiratory tract, with an incidence of one per 42,000-68,000 hospital admissions in one hospital series. They comprise 10-15% of mediastinal tumors and between 50% and 60% of mediastinal cystic lesions. Its clinical diagnosis is often challenging due to the absence of distinct imaging features. This case report focuses on the case of a 51-year-old female who initially received a misdiagnosis of esophageal leiomyoma. Subsequently, during exploration in the operating theater, right thoracoscopy revealed

Bronchogenic cysts are rare cystic malformations of the respiratory tract with prevalence that is largely unknown. They are most commonly diagnosed incidentally in asymptomatic patients. While surgical resection is the mainstay of treatment for patients who are symptomatic, the treatment course for patients without symptoms is less clear. We describe the case of an initially asymptomatic elderly man who was found to have a bronchogenic cyst on routine surveillance imaging, culminating in the rapid enlargement and malignant transformation of the cyst, ultimately resulting in a technically diffi

A male infant, one month old, weight 4000 g, breastfed only, no pathological history, was admitted to the 2nd Pediatric Clinic, Clinical Emergency County Hospital in Craiova with fever and cough. Clinical findings when he was admitted: fever 38.7°C, perioral cyanosis, spastic cough, expiratory dyspnea, intercostal retraction, polypnea, subcrepitant rales in the right lung area. The chest x-ray revealed pneumonia aspect in the right middle perihilar region. He was administered antibiotic treatment, HHC, antithermics, with a favorable evolution. The control x-ray, when the infant was in a fair g

Esophageal bronchogenic cysts are rare, and since a limited number of cases has been reported, the treatment plan for asymptomatic patients is difficult. A 55-year-old man without any symptoms visited our hospital for further examination of an esophageal mass detected on simple computed tomography. Upper endoscopy showed the protruding, submucosal mass covered by normal mucosa, and endoscopic sonography confirmed hypoechoic lesions originating from the muscularis propria. The patient was diagnosed as having an esophageal duplication cyst and underwent thoracoscopic resection. Pathological find

AIM: Bronchogenic cysts are congenital lesions deriving from the primitive foregut, and are usually located in close relation to tracheobronchial tree or oesophagus. We report a case of an oesophageal bronchogenic cyst appearing at preoperative examinations as a benign fibromuscular tumour (leiomyoma).
CASE REPORT: A 62 years old male patient in good general conditions, was admitted to our Institution because of moderate dysphagia and upper post-prandial abdominal pain. Conventional imaging, endoscopy and echo endoscopy detected a parietal oesophageal wall mass looking like a solid formation,

Bronchogenic cysts are congenital. They are typically discovered in infancy or early childhood. Secondary infection of the cyst is uncommon. We present the case of a 17-year-old female who presented to the emergency department with intermediate onset of upper abdominal, and retrosternal chest pain and fever. Subsequent X-ray and computerised tomography scan showed a bronchogenic cyst. The patient underwent subacute thoracotomy where a bronchogenic cyst filled with pus was located and excised. Bronchogenic cysts can be a rare cause of retrosternal pain.

Bronchogenic cysts are congenital anomalies originating from the primitive tracheobronchial tree in the fetal period. Although the middle mediastinum is the site most commonly affected (second only to the lungs), there have been reports of bronchogenic cysts at unusual sites, such as the retroperitoneum. We report the case of a 4-year-old boy with a cystic mass in the left scapular area since birth. The cyst grew progressively and was accompanied by recurrent episodes of local infection requiring drainage. It was then surgically removed. The histological findings were decisive for the diagnosi

A 45-year-old smoker was referred for evaluation of recent onset streaky hemoptysis and a large cystic lesion in the left lower lobe (LLL). Presence of air trapping in LLL was observed on computed tomography scan of thorax. Prior to completion of diagnostic evaluation, the patient was lost to follow up. On return after a two-month gap, 'disappearance' of the cyst was observed along with complete collapse of LLL. A fibreoptic bronchoscopy revealed presence of a tumor completely occluding the LLL main bronchus and biopsy confirmed presence of squamous cell carcinoma of lung. The temporal clinico
