In a representative cross-sectional study during 12 months of the years 2008/2009 in four abattoirs in Switzerland, lung and pleura lesions as well as lesions of slaughter carcasses and organs of 34 706 pigs were studied for frequency and type of macroscopic lesions. Of the 24276 examined pigs, 91.2% of the lungs, 94.4% of the heart and 95.5% of the livers showed no macroscopically visible lesions. Pigs that were produced for a label program had significantly less bronchopneumonia and pneumonia residuals, pleuritis and liver lesions due to echinococcosis. Pigs supervised by the Swiss Pig Healt

A case of severe rhabdomyolysis with extensive myocardial involvement in a 32 year old alcoholic man is reported. He referred effort dyspnea for the last eight months which worsened thirteen days before his death. Admitted at the institute he was obnubilated and dyspneic. Massive pulmonary thromboembolism was suspected and heparin was given. He was then transferred to our intensive care unit in circulatory collapse. A chest Rx showed cardiomegaly. A Swan-Ganz catheter was introduced and abnormal parameters corrected. Evolution was complicated with acute cholecystitis, nosocomial bronchopneumon

A 6 month-old mulatto boy was admitted on account of acute gastroenteritis, malnutrition and dehydration. In the hospital, the child developed septicemia, and temperature reached up to 38.6 degrees C. Despite intensive antibiotic treatment the patient died 12 days after admission. Necropsy disclosed bilateral bronchopneumonia, bilateral fronto-parietal subarachnoid hemorrhage, and extensive necrosis of the inferior half of both cerebellar hemispheres. On histopathological examination of the necrotic cerebellar cortex, numerous sickled erythrocytes were observed in petechial hemorrhages, and, i

Canine angiostrongylosis is a gastropod-borne parasitosis caused by the cosmopolitan nematode Angiostrongylus vasorum. It is associated with cardiorespiratory disorders and eventually fatal coagulopathies. A 6-months-old female dog previously diagnosed with bronchopneumonia and pneumothorax, treated accordingly without success, was hospitalized for further treatment. Complementary diagnostics confirmed previous findings plus pneumomediastinum, thoracic exudate, leucocytosis, thrombocytosis, hypercoagulability, and hyperglobulinemia. Coprological analysis showed a severe patent A. vasorum infec

An outbreak of fatal hemorrhagic pneumonia with 70-90% morbidity and 50% mortality occurred in an animal shelter in Yangju, Gyeonggi Province, Korea. Clinically, the affected dogs showed severe respiratory distress within 48 h after arriving in the shelter. The dead were found mainly with nasal bleeding and hematemesis. At necropsy, hemothorax and hemorrhagic pneumonia along with severe pulmonary consolidation was observed, though histopathological analysis showed mainly hemorrhagic bronchopneumonia. Lymphoid depletion was inconsistently seen in the spleen, tonsil and bronchial lymph node. Gra

UNLABELLED: A 43-year-old patient admitted with acute myelogenous leukemia, developed bronchopneumonia and sepsis during profound neutropenia. Fever and pulmonary infiltrates did not improve by using empiric antibacterial therapy (Cefoperazona-Sulbactam, Trimethoprim-Sulphametoxazol). Blood and sputum culture were performed and patient received Voriconazol. Both cultures, from blood and sputum, yielded Candida guilliermondii after 48 hours of incubations. The isolates have the same biochemical and antimicrobial spectrum and were susceptible to Amphotericin B and Fluconazole. After a few days o

Bordetella hinzii isolated from the trachea and lungs of a laboratory mouse with a respiratory infection was identified based on its phenotypic and genetic traits. The mouse showed sneezing with a chattering sound but without nasal discharge, and histopathologic examination revealed rhinitis, tracheitis, and bronchopneumonia. The isolate was a gram-negative, oxidase- and catalase-positive, short rod-shaped organism that produced alkali from malonate. The results of biochemical identification, an alkali production test from malonate, and partial sequence analysis of the 16S rRNA gene (1523 bp)

Graft-versus-host disease, a complication of allogeneic bone-marrow transplantation, involves primarily the skin, liver and intestines, but may also be associated with pneumonia. To determine the relation of graft-versus-host disease with pneumonia, we evaluated the autopsies of 59 allogeneic and two autologous recipients and 74 control patients with various pulmonary diseases, who had not received a bone-marrow transplant. Lymphocytic bronchitis, characterized by lymphocyte-associated necrosis of the bronchial mucosa and often the submucosal glands, was present in 12 of 20 patients with Grade

PURPOSE: Human metapneumovirus has been increasingly identified as a cause of lower respiratory tract infection in adults worldwide. The CT imaging features of human metapneumovirus in adults have not been characterized. The purpose of this paper is to determine the imaging features of human metapneumovirus and to compare them with features of other viruses.
METHODS: Two clinicians retrospectively reviewed the medical records of 104 adults with lower respiratory tract infection due to human metapneumovirus at four hospitals in the northeast USA over 32 months. CT images were evaluated by two

Lungworm infection in seals is an important cause of morbidity and mortality, inducing bronchopneumonia and affecting population dynamics in some areas of the world. We present a series of cases of lungworm infection in grey seals (Halichoerus grypus) associated with novel, significant and unusual pulmonary vascular changes. Grey seals (n = 180) that were stranded, in rehabilitation or in long-term captivity in the UK were subjected to post-mortem examination between 2012 and 2018. Lung tissue was collected from 47 individuals for histopathological examination. Polymerase chain reaction (PCR)

Cytomegalovirus (CMV) pneumonitis infections might present mild or severe illnesses and need sophisticated diagnostic tools, so it remains a diagnostic challenge. We reported five infants diagnosed with CMV pneumonitis who were initially and undiagnosed by the pediatrician in secondary private or public health hospitals with no improvement with standard and escalation of antibiotics treatment for bronchopneumonia as the initial diagnoses. As all cases occurred during the COVID-19 pandemic, they proved negative COVID-19 identified by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) SARS-CoV-2. We diagnosed acqu

OBJECTIVE: To report the development of a tension pneumomediastinum during mechanical ventilation of a young Irish Wolfhound with aspiration pneumonia.
CASE SUMMARY: A 9-month-old intact female Irish Wolfhound was presented for clinical signs consistent with aspiration pneumonia. Evaluation of her pedigree and clinical signs prompted suspicion of Irish Wolfhound rhinitis bronchopneumonia syndrome as a contributing factor. Despite supportive care for bronchopneumonia, progressive hypoxemia and increased work of breathing required mechanical ventilation (MV). Development of a pneumothorax 36 ho

Radiological imaging is one of the important clues for diagnosis of pulmonary mycobacterial infection. Differential diagnosis of pulmonary tuberculosis and nontuberculous mycobacterial infection is following; bacterial pneumonia, bronchopneumonia, mycoplasma pneumonia, pulmonary fungal infection, diffuse panbronchiolitis, sinobronchial syndrome, sarcoidosis, Wegener's granulomatosis, bronchiolealveolar carcinoma, pulmonary malignant lymphoma, and pneumoconiosis. Characteristic findings of bronchial tuberculosis are chronic productive cough with no radiological finding, lobar atelectasis, or mu
