PURPOSE: To evaluate retromode scanning laser ophthalmoscopy (RM-SLO) for detecting and characterizing angioid streaks (AS).
METHODS: Retrospective case series of five patients (10 eyes) imaged with color fundus, fundus autofluorescence, spectral-domain optical coherence tomography (OCT), and RM-SLO using right-deviated, left-deviated (DL), and ring/central apertures. Two graders assessed images; disagreements were adjudicated by a third expert.
RESULTS: Retromode scanning laser ophthalmoscopy depicted AS as hyporeflective bands. Right-deviated and DL produced polarity-dependent, relief-like

Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is an eye disease that can cause visual impairment and affects the elderly over 50 years of age. AMD is characterized by the presence of drusen, which causes changes in the physiological structure of the retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) and the boundaries of the Bruch's membrane layer (BM). Optical coherence tomography is one of the main exams for the detection and monitoring of AMD, which seeks changes through the evaluation of successive sectional cuts in the search for morphological changes caused by drusen. The use of CAD (Computer-Aided Detection) sy

The contribution of choroidal vasculature to the pathogenesis of age-related macular degeneration (AMD) has been long debated. The present narrative review aims to discuss the primary molecular and choroidal structural changes occurring with aging and AMD with a brief overview of the principal multimodal imaging modalities and techniques that enable the optimal in vivo visualization of choroidal modifications. The molecular aspects that target the choroid in AMD mainly involve human leukocyte antigen (HLA) expression, complement dysregulation, leukocyte interaction at Bruch's membrane, and mas

Alterations of the junctional complex of the outer blood-retinal barrier (oBRB), which is integrated by the close interaction of the retinal pigment epithelium, the Bruch's membrane, and the choriocapillaris, contribute to the loss of neuronal signalling and subsequent vision impairment in several retinal inflammatory disorders such as age-related macular degeneration and diabetic retinopathy. Reductionist approaches into the mechanisms that underlie such diseases have been hindered by the absence of adequate in vitro models using human cells to provide the 3D dynamic architecture that enables

AMD is a major cause of legal blindness in older adults approachable through multidisciplinary research involving human tissues and patients. AMD is a vascular-metabolic-inflammatory disease, in which two sets of extracellular deposits, soft drusen/basal linear deposit (BLinD) and subretinal drusenoid deposit (SDD), confer risk for end-stages of atrophy and neovascularization. Understanding how deposits form can lead to insights for new preventions and therapy. The topographic correspondence of BLinD and SDD with cones and rods, respectively, suggest newly realized exchange pathways among oute

PURPOSE: Adeno-associated viral (AAV) vectors have been used to express several different proteins in the eye. The purpose of this study was to determine whether AAV-mediated intraocular gene transfer of pigment epithelium-derived factor (PEDF) inhibits the development of choroidal neovascularization (CNV) in a murine model.
METHODS: C57BL/6 mice were given intravitreous or subretinal injections of a PEDF expression construct packaged in an AAV vector (AAV-chicken beta-actin promoter-exon 1-intron 1[CBA]-PEDF) or control vector (AAV-CBA-green fluorescent protein[GFP]). After 4 or 6 weeks, the

Following an initial improvement after argon laser slit-lamp photocoagulation of histoplasmic choroiditis, progressive visual loss occurred. Histopathological examination showed a dense fibrous membrane between Bruch's membrane and the sensory retina. There was no recurrence of hemorrhage or subretinal fluid. This case report provides an explanation for visual loss in the absence of recurrent inflammation or vascular leakage.

INTRODUCTION: Optic nerve head drusen are congenital calcium deposits located in the prelaminar section of the optic nerve head. Their association with visual field defects has been classically described, but the diagnosis of glaucoma is not easy in these cases of altered optic nerve head anatomy.
CASE STUDY: We describe the case of a 67-year-old man with optic nerve head drusen complicated by glaucoma, which was confirmed by visual field and OCT examination of the peripapillary retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL), but the measurement of the minimum distance between the Bruch membrane opening an

Reported are 15 cases of age-related macular degeneration (AMD) complicated by massive subretinal and/or vitreous hemorrhage. Clinicopathologic correlation is presented in four of the seven cases studied histopathologically. Salient histologic findings include: subretinal and subretinal pigment epithelium (sub-RPE) fibrovascular scar in the posterior pole; discontinuities in Bruch's membrane with choroidal neovascularization; extensive hemorrhagic detachment of the RPE and sensory retina; and vitreous hemorrhage. In three cases, a choroidal artery, emerging from breaks in Bruch's membrane, had

Retinal pigment epithelium detachment (PED) is a pathological condition in which retinal pigment epithelium is separated from the underlying Bruch's membrane due to the formation of a fibrovascular membrane, drusenoid material, accumulation of fluid and/or blood. Six types of RPE detachments have been determined: pseudovitelliform, detachments associated with drainage drusen, serous, vascular and hemorrhagic, as well as PED associated with vascular retinal anomaly. The drusenoid PED is always avascular, the drusenoid material is contained between the RPE and Bruch's membrane. It was first desc

The generalized choroidal and retinal response to a focal nonreplicating infection of the eye with ascarid larvae was examined in an animal model. Intravitreal injection of Ascaris suum larvae in guinea pigs induced a diffuse eosinophilic choroiditis, retinal pigment epitheliopathy and neuroretinal degeneration, distant from focal reactions about larvae. As the choroiditis progressed, inflammatory cells separated the choriocapillaris from Bruch's membrane, and the endothelial cells lost their fenestrations. Focal disruption of the elastic and outer collagenous layers of Bruch's membrane occurr

This case series describes a novel optical coherence tomography (OCT) finding in avascular serous pigment epithelial detachment (PED) secondary to central serous chorioretinopathy (CSC), and evaluates its multimodal imaging features and clinical relevance. Two patients with CSC demonstrated a well-demarcated, hyperreflective band extending between the retinal pigment epithelium and Bruch's membrane within the serous PED on macular OCT. Multimodal imaging, encompassing fluorescein angiography and OCT angiography, was employed to ascertain the absence of neovascularization, thereby substantiatin

The fine structure of the retinal epithelium has been studied by electron microscopy in the opossum (Didelphis virginiana). The retinal epithelium, over most of the retina, is typical of that in other vertebrates and consists of a single layer of heavily pigmented, cuboidal cells. These cells display extensive basal (scleral) infoldings and numerous apical (vitreal) processes which enclose photoreceptor outer segments. A semicircular area of the retinal epithelium in the superior fundus is further specialized as a tapetum lucidum. The reflecting material consists of a large quantity of lipoida
