To demonstrate predation and potential impacts of raccoons on various species, a total of 108 raccoons from aquatic-associated nature reserves and natural areas in three federal states of Germany, Hesse (n = 36), Saxony-Anhalt (n = 36) and Brandenburg (n = 36), were investigated from a dietary ecological perspective in the present study. Fecal analyses and stomach content examinations were conducted for this purpose. Additionally, as a supplementary method for analyzing the dietary spectrum of raccoons, the parasite fauna was considered, as metazoan parasites, in particular, can serve as indic

The genus Maxvachonia Chabaud et Brygoo, 1960 (Ascaridomorpha: Cosmocercidae) is a poorly known group of parasitic nematodes. Species of Maxvachonia are native to Madagascar-Australo-Papuan Region, where they are known to parasitise frogs, snakes and skinks. Unfortunately, most of Maxvachonia species have been inadequately described. In the present study, we report the native species Maxvachonia chabaudi Mawson, 1972 from the intestine of the invasive marine toad Rhinella marina (Linnaeus) in Australia for the first time. We speculate that the marine toads infected with M. chabaudi are likely

Identifying the adverse impacts of pesticide exposure is essential to guide regulations that are protective of wildlife and human health. Within rice ecosystems, amphibians are valuable indicators because pesticide applications coincide with sensitive reproductive and developmental life stages. We conducted two experiments using wild cane toads (Rhinella marina) to test 1) whether environmentally relevant exposure to a commercial formulation of butachlor, an acetanilide herbicide used extensively in rice, affects amphibian development and 2) whether cane toad tadpoles are capable of acclimatiz

Osmotic permeabilities of several epithelial structures have been determined with novel optical procedures based on specular microscopy. The osmotic permeabilities of several tissue layers were determined by continuously monitoring the position of the apical tissue borders while an osmotic flow was imposed across those layers. The values found were (in micrometer/s; mean +/- SE): corneal epithelium, 137 +/- 30 (n = 5): antidiuretic hormone stimulated toad bladder, 429 +/- 64 (n = 6); and corneal endothelium, 711 +/- 34 (n = 7). In addition, the osmotically-induced transient change in thickness

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: Multiple myeloma (MM) is a common hematologic malignancy. Huachansu (HCS) is extracted from the skin of Bufo bufo gargarizans, known for its well-established and multi-target anti-tumor effect. It has been reported to be effective in treating patients with multiple myeloma but its underlying mechanism remains unclear.
AIM OF THE STUDY: This study aims to investigate the cellular and molecular mechanisms in which HCS induces cell death of MM.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Cell viability was assessed using the CCK-8 assay. The effect of HCS on the gene expression of MM

Loss of fitness can be a consequence of selection for rapid dispersal ability in invasive species. Increased prevalence of spinal arthritis may occur in cane toad populations at the invasion front as a cost of increased invasiveness, but our knowledge of the ecological drivers of this condition is lacking. We aimed to determine the factors explaining the prevalence of spinal arthritis in populations across the Australian landscape. We studied populations across a gradient of invasion histories. We collected 2415 toads over five years and determined the presence and size of spondylosis for each

Hannemania larvae are parasites of amphibians in North and South America. In Chile, only one species of Hannemania has been reported from Batrachyla taeniata (banded wood frog). The objective of the study was to determine the abundance and body distribution of Hannemania among three amphibians from Antuco (Biobío Region, Chile): Pleurodema thaul (13 adults; Chile four-eyed frog), Pleurodema bufonina (5 adults; large four-eyed frog), and Rhinella spinulosa (15 adults and 16 juveniles; warty toad). Amphibians (82.75 %; n = 49) were infested with Hannemania. The infestation rate in R. spinulosa j

19-Nor-corticosteroids are potentially important mineralocorticoids and hypertensive agents. We tested the mineralocorticoid potency of 19-nor-progesterone (19-NOR-P) and 19-nor-corticosterone (19-NOR-B) compared with aldosterone using the toad bladder short-circuit current as a measure of sodium transport. 19-NOR-B (10(-7) M) increased sodium transport to a degree not different from that caused by aldosterone (10(-7) M). The onset of action and duration of activity also were not different from those of aldosterone. 19-NOR-P (10(-7) M), however, had no effect on sodium transport. We conclude t

Members of the genus Basidiobolus, a saprophytic fungus, have been associated with the digestive tracts of a wide variety of amphibians and reptiles. To elucidate the relationship of Basidiobolus sp. with amphibians in central Florida (USA), we document the occurrence of the fungus in the digestive tracts of Bufo terrestris, Buffo quercicus, Hyla femoralis, Hyla cinerea, Hyla gratiosa, Hyla squirella, Osteopilus septentrionalis, and Rana utricularia. Species that occupy terrestrial habitats (B. terrestris, B. quercicus, and R. utricularis) were found to harbor Basidiobolus spp. more frequently

Evolutionary arms races can alter both parasite infectivity and host resistance, and it is difficult to separate the effects of these twin determinants of infection outcomes. We used a co-introduced, invasive host-parasite system (the lungworm Rhabdias pseudosphaerocephala and cane toads Rhinella marina), where rapid adaptation and dispersal have led to population differences in infection resistance. We quantified behavioural responses of parasite larvae to skin-chemical cues of toads from different invasive populations, and rates at which juvenile hosts became infected following standardized

Krogh introduced the concept of active ion uptake across surface epithelia of freshwater animals, and proved independent transports of Na(+) and Cl(-) in anuran skin and fish gill. He suggested that the fluxes of Na(+) and Cl(-) involve exchanges with ions of similar charge. In the so-called Krogh model, Cl(-)/HCO(3)(-) and Na(+)/H(+) antiporters are located in the apical membrane of the osmoregulatory epithelium. More recent studies have shown that H(+) excretion in anuran skin is due to a V-ATPase in mitochondria-rich (MR) cells. The pump has been localized by immunostaining and H(+) fluxes

Cane toads, an invasive species in Australia, are resistant to fungal pathogens affecting frogs worldwide (Batrachochytrium dendrobatidis). From toad skin swabs, we detected higher proportions of bacteria with antifungal properties in Queensland, where toad and pathogen distributions overlap, than in other sites. This finding suggests that site-specific pathogen pressures help shape skin microbial communities.

Initial research on the spread of cane toads (Rhinella marina) through tropical Australia reported a high incidence of spinal arthritis (spondylosis) in toads at the invasion front (where toads disperse rapidly), but not in areas colonized earlier (where toads are more sedentary). The idea that spondylosis was a cost of rapid dispersal was challenged by wider spatial sampling which linked rates of spondylosis to hot (tropical) climates rather than to dispersal rates. Here, the authors of these competing interpretations collaborate to reinterpret the data. Our reanalysis supports both previous

Mucormycosis is an opportunistic infection that affects humans and animals, being caused by moulds of the order Mucorales. In amphibians, mucormycosis has been well documented in association with Mucor amphibiorum. In this study, histopathological examination of cutaneous nodules in a Japanese common toad (Bufo japonicus) revealed fungal granulomas and sporangia. Phylogenetic analyses of five partial gene fragments, namely the internal transcribed spacer, mini chromosome maintenance complex component 7 (mcm7), largest subunit of RNA polymerase II (rpb1), 20S ribosomal RNA accumulation protein

During late May 1995, 50 adult captive endangered Wyoming toads (Bufo baxteri) were brought out of hibernation. Approximately 3 to 10 days after hibernation emergence, all toads were hormonally induced to breed, and paired. Each pair was placed in their own breeding tank. Four toads developed clinical signs of disease which included lethargy and multiple (4 to 12) small (2 mm) raised hyperemic nodules with white fuzzy caps on the ventral skin. The condition progressively worsened until death occurred, within 3 to 6 days. Mycotic dermatitis caused by Mucor sp. was diagnosed in the four toads th

1. The enzymatic, hemorrhagic, procoagulant and anticoagulant activities of venoms of some animals including snakes, lizards, toads, scorpions, spider, wasps, bees and ants were compared. 2. Snake venom was the richest source of enzymes among the animal venoms. Most other animal venoms were devoid of phosphodiesterase, L-amino acid oxidase, alkaline phosphomonoesterase and acetylcholinesterase activities and only a few exhibited arginine ester hydrolase activity. These venoms, however, exhibited wide ranges of protease, 5'-nucleotidase and hyaluronidase activities. Most of the animal venoms ex

Marinobufagenin (MBG), a steroid compound belonging to the bufadienolide cardiac inotropes, is a molecule enjoying a growing interest in the early diagnostic of volume expansion-mediated hypertensive states. This endogenous mammalian cardiotonic and natriuretic bufadienolide (characterized by vasoconstrictive activities) inhibits the α1 isoform of Na(+), K(+)-ATPase, implicating it in series of pathophysiological circumstances such as volume-expansion, essential hypertension and preeclampsia. Indeed, the enhanced production of MBG in preeclamptic patients has been confirmed in several studies,

We report myiasis by Lucilia silvarum with an overall prevalence of 0.9% in amphibian populations in boreal Alberta. In the period 1998--1999, we documented L. silvarum infestations in wild populations of wood frog (Rana sylvatica), boreal chorus frog (Pseudacris maculata), boreal toad (Bufo boreas boreas), and Canadian toad (B. hemiophrys). We believe this is the first record of this parasite from boreal and Canadian toads. Almost all previous records of L. silvarum parasitism in North America indicate that myiasis is fatal to an anuran host. Here, we provide the first record of adult individ
