The ability of serum C-reactive protein (S-CRP) to differentiate between acute bacterial and viral meningitis was evaluated in 235 patients, both children and adults. The patients underwent lumbar puncture due to suspected central nervous system (CNS) infection. In patients with bacterial meningitis, 7/60 (12%) had S-CRP concentrations below 50 mg/l. Of these patients, 4 were children below 6 years of age, all with symptoms of meningitis for less than 12 h before admission and 3 adults of whom 1 had symptoms of meningitis for less than 12 h. In patients with viral meningitis, 15/146 (10%) had

Serial quantitative measurements of C-reactive protein (CRP) were performed, using an automated enzyme immunoassay method, in 127 neonates (114 premature and 13 full-term) classified in three groups: neonates with a normal postnatal course (group 1, n = 69), neonates with clinical suspicion of bacterial infection but with negative cultures (group 2, n = 49), and neonates with proven bacterial infection (group 3, n = 9). A total of 545 serial serum CRP concentrations were determined. In group 1, CRP concentrations were below the detection limit of the method (10 mg/L) except in one neonate who

We examined the diagnostic value of C-reactive protein (CRP) in cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) on initial lumbar puncture in a prospective study including 126 patients (30 neonates, 96 infants and children) suspected of having meningitis. Twenty patients were considered to have bacterial and 25 were considered to have viral meningitis. In infants and children, a retrospectively chosen cut-off CRP titre of 4 (i.e. approximately equal to 0.4 mg/l CRP) had a sensitivity of 100% and a specificity of 94% for differentiating bacterial meningitis from both viral meningitis and normal. It was a more sensit

A prospective serial study of 13 well-documented, previously untreated cases of polymyalgia rheumatica was undertaken in order to assess the behavior of the nonspecific indices of disease activity, erythrocyte sedimentation rate and serum C-reactive protein (CRP) concentration, during induction of disease remission by prednisolone therapy. The clinical manifestations of all patients responded rapidly and completely to steroids, and the serum CRP value, which was raised in all patients at presentation, fell to normal at a rate which precisely reflected the clinical improvement. The erythrocyte

Serum levels of C-reactive protein (CRP) were measured within 96 hours of birth in 55 neonates with respiratory distress syndrome (RDS), 19 neonates with no significant medical illness other than an unstable cardiovascular state, and 13 neonates with a variety of pulmonary and extra-pulmonary problems either alone or in combination with RDS. The median serum CRP level in patients with RDS (2 micrograms/ml) was neither elevated nor different from CRP levels in infants with unstable cardiovascular systems (median CRP level, 2 micrograms/ml); however, neonates with other problems including pneumo

Changes in serum concentrations versus time of C reactive protein and orosomucoid were investigated in 134 neonates with either materno-foetal infection (group A, n = 111) or nosocomial infection (group B, n = 23). Both proteins were significantly elevated in group A neonates, with mean +/- S.E.M. values of 0.029 +/- 0,003 g/l for C reactive protein (n = 111) and 0.56 +/- 0.003 g/l for orosomucoid (n = 37). In cases with superinfection serum levels of both proteins rose before clinical symptoms developed. Changes in orosomucoid concentrations occurred a few hours after changes in C reactive pr

C-reactive protein (CRP) was determined serially in 31 patients with premature rupture of the membranes, 41 patients in premature labor, and 18 pregnant patients with a variety of high-risk conditions. Elevated levels of CRP were not predictive of clinical amnionitis, histologic chorioamnionitis, or neonatal sepsis. No discernible relationship was found between serum CRP and peripheral white blood cell count. CRP was not elevated (false negative) in two patients in the premature labor group with culture-proved bacterial amnionitis. Elevated CRP in the absence of infection (false positive) like

High level of C-reactive protein (CRP), most popular inflammatory marker, increases the risk of thrombotic cardiovascular events. Aspirin, which has both anti-inflammatory and anti-thrombotic effects, has the potential to influence CRP release. Several studies have been reported investigating clinical effects of aspirin on CRP levels. Some studies have reported aspirin reduced CRP levels, but other studies did not. This study was designed to assess the effect of low-dose aspirin on CRP levels in controlled hypertensive patients who had low inflammatory burden. Two hundred twenty-five patients

OBJECT: Shunt infections and their management remain a clinically important problem in patients with hydrocephalus. The authors evaluated, in comparison with traditional parameters, C-reactive protein (CRP) in blood/serum (S-CRP) and in cerebrospinal fluid (CSF; C-CRP) for its power to identify and treat patients with infected shunts.
METHODS: On 84 different occasions, CSF and blood samples from 59 children suspected of having shunt/CSF infections were obtained and evaluated. An infection was proven by a CSF culture in 35 of 84 evaluations. Values for S-CRP in infected individuals were highe

AIM: Early diagnosis of sepsis in the neonate is often difficult because symptoms and signs are usually non-specific. A study was conducted to evaluate C-reactive protein (CRP) as a screening tool for neonatal sepsis among very low birth weight (VLBW) infants.
METHODS: The study population consisted of 70 VLBW infants suspected of sepsis. Sepsis was diagnosed from positive cultures of blood, cerebro-spinal fluid or bone/joint aspirate in the presence of signs. Positive cultures were the "gold standard" against which the performance of CRP > or = 1.0 mg/dL, abnormal white cell counts (WCC), ab

PURPOSE: Early distinction between perforated and non-perforated acute appendicitis (AA) in children remains challenging. Conventional inflammatory markers have limited accuracy, highlighting the potential value of composite inflammatory indices.
METHODS: Pediatric patients were categorized as having non-perforated or perforated appendicitis based on intraoperative findings and histopathologic confirmation. Laboratory data obtained on hospital admission included C-reactive protein (CRP), white blood cell count, and differential leukocyte percentages.
RESULTS: The subjects of this retrospecti

INTRODUCTION: Infections linked to orthopedic trauma are common complications that place a significant strain on the healthcare system. Immediate identification of the infection and its severity is essential for providing effective treatment.
METHODS: C-reactive Protein (CRP) is a commonly used inflammatory marker in orthopedic surgery and has proven to be a valuable biomarker for diagnosing and monitoring infections. Specifically, CRP aids in the early identification of postoperative infections. This research work has focused on developing a highly sensitive CRP biosensor using iron oxide na

OBJECTIVE (S): Idiopathic and granulomatosis with polyangiitis (GPA)-related subglottic stenosis (SGS) are considered distinct immune-mediated inflammatory disorders. Limited data exist on serum inflammatory markers, specifically C-Reactive Protein (CRP), for SGS diagnosis, differentiation, and prognostication. The study objective was the characterization of CRP levels in idiopathic (iSGS) and GPA-SGS to assess CRP's ability to distinguish SGS subtypes and predict SGS progression and recurrence.
METHODS: Retrospective review of patients with idiopathic or GPA-SGS from 2007 to 2024 at a single

Several observational studies have shown that C-reactive protein (CRP) is an effective biomarker for evaluating septic arthritis (SA). However, the inherent causal relationship of this connection has not yet been clarified. Thus, this study examined the potential causal association between CRP and SA risk using 2-sample Mendelian randomization (MR). The analysis used 2-sample MR, with the exposure and outcome data from the Genome-Wide Association Study Catalog and FinnGen, respectively. Throughout this study, inverse variance weighting has been used as the primary method. To assess the robustn

BACKGROUND: CRP (C-reactive protein) is a prototypical acute phase reactant. Upon dissociation of the pentameric isoform (pCRP [pentameric CRP]) into its monomeric subunits (mCRP [monomeric CRP]), it exhibits prothrombotic and proinflammatory activity. Pathophysiological shear rates as observed in aortic valve stenosis (AS) can influence protein conformation and function as observed with vWF (von Willebrand factor). Given the proinflammatory function of dissociated CRP and the important role of inflammation in the pathogenesis of AS, we investigated whether shear stress can modify CRP conforma

BACKGROUND: People with schizophrenia (SZ) and bipolar disorder (BD) show abnormalities in the biological stress system and low-grade inflammation. However, whether the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis-immune regulation is disrupted in SZ and BD, is yet to be determined.
METHODS: Cortisol and C-reactive protein (CRP) were measured in blood samples collected at or before 10 am in participants with SZ (N = 257), BD (N = 153), and healthy controls (N = 40). Cortisol/CRP ratio was calculated as an indicator of the balance between HPA axis activity and inflammatory activity, called HPA ax
