Calciphylaxis is an uncommon complication of end stage renal disease (ESRD) and secondary hyperparathyroidism. It characterized by cutaneous necrosis with mural calcifications and thrombosis in the small vessels of dermis. It is important to diagnose and treat, because of mortality rate from calciphylaxis is very high. We present the case of a patient with ESRD and type II diabetes mellitus developing calciphylaxis of the both upper and lower extremities had normal corrected calcium-phosphate product level. After amputation, necrosis was showed rapid progression resulting in death in one month

PURPOSE: Penile calciphylaxis is a rare condition resulting in infection and gangrene. Most cases are associated with systemic calciphylaxis. The pathophysiology, diagnosis and management of penile calciphylaxis as a distinct entity have received little attention. We reviewed the literature to increase understanding of this disease.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A retrospective review of the literature was performed after treating a case of penile calciphylaxis. Patient characteristics, presentation, serum chemistry studies, management and outcomes are reported.
RESULTS: A total of 34 cases of peni

We report a patient who presented with gangrene of the penis due to renal failure and calciphylaxis. In view of his advanced underlying conditions we pursued an expectant approach. Superinfection set in necessitating extensive debridement, demasculinisation and a perineal urethrostomy. Of the 34 reported cases in the literature, 12 (35%) were treated conservatively, 18 (53%) had been treated expectantly with delayed surgery following the development of complications and 4 (12%) underwent early surgery (penectomy). 20 (59%) of the patients subsequently died--8/12 (58%) treated conservatively, 1

INTRODUCTION: Calciphylaxis (calcific uremic arteriolopathy) is a rare complication of end-stage renal disease in patients with secondary hyperparathyroidism. Subcutaneous skin nodules and extensive tissue necrosis with vascular calcification characterize this process.
DESIGN AND SETTING: The design of the study included case series and literature review. The study was set in a tertiary care hospital.
PATIENTS: Four patients presented over an 8-month period with extensive tissue loss and the subsequent diagnosis of calciphylaxis. Two of these patients were revascularized. One underwent prima

BACKGROUND: Calciphylaxis, also referred to as calcific uraemic arteriolopathy, is a syndrome associated with end-stage renal disease (ESRD), and causes necrotic skin ulcers, often leading to a fatal outcome. Hyperbaric oxygen (HBO(2)) therapy has been used to enhance wound healing, but its role in the treatment of calciphylaxis is unclear.
METHODS: We undertook a retrospective study of patients on renal replacement therapy with biopsy-proven calciphylaxis who were treated with HBO(2) between March 1997 and February 2000.
RESULTS: Five patients were treated with HBO(2): three patients were o

An attempt to clarify some pathophysiological aspects of calciphylaxis from both experimental and clinical points of view is presented. Until now, we cannot explain precisely various forms of calcification, affecting either soft tissues or biomaterial as well, only on the basis of metastatic or dystrophic calcification including the pure topical, local aspects. Therefore, the biological phenomenon of calciphylaxis can be useful in searching the ways for the inhibition of soft tissues and biomaterial calcification. The experiments with experimental progeria have also made it possible to study t

Calciphylaxis is a rare and life-threatening condition of progressive cutaneous necrosis secondary to small and medium-sized vessel calcification. It is seen almost exclusively in patients with end-stage renal disease and secondary hyperparathyroidism. We experienced a case of 67-year-old man with calciphylaxis that manifested with characteristic skin lesions, pathologic findings, and laboratory changes. His skin lesions began as painful erythematous patches and subsequently progressed to necrotic ulcers with eschars on the distal aspect of the extremities. Pathologically, calcification was fo

Calciphylaxis is a rare disease that is caused by calcium deposition in medium and small sized vessels of the skin causing ischemic necrosis. These lesions often become infected and cause septicemia. We report a unique case of penile and scrotal calciphylaxis that rapidly progressed to Fournier's gangrene. We review the etiology of calciphylaxis and also its management.

BACKGROUND: Calciphylaxis is a rare and life-threatening condition occurring in patients with end-stage renal disease on dialysis. The diagnosis is frequently delayed or missed and therapy is often unsuccessful.
OBJECTIVE: The clinical and pathological components of calciphylaxis are emphasized in a patient that may facilitate early diagnosis and initiation of therapy.
RESULTS: Early recognition of the clinical signs and symptoms of calciphylaxis is crucial. The tissue diagnosis requires large elliptical biopsies because histological findings are segmental and often missed.
CONCLUSION: Earl

Several types of soft tissue calcification can be detected from radiographic evaluation of patients with end-stage renal failure. The factors that predispose to such calcification include an increase in CaxP product in serum, the degree of secondary hyperparathyroidism, the level of blood magnesium, the degree of alkalosis, and the presence of local tissue injury. Three major varieties include calcification of medium-sized arteries, periarticular or tumoral calcification and visceral calcification. Calciphylaxis is a phenomenon consisting of acute ischemic necrosis in presence of calcification

INTRODUCTION: Calciphylaxis is a condition that causes vascular calcification and intimal proliferation with thrombotic occlusion of small-to-medium-sized vessels.
CASE PRESENTATION: We describe a case of a 64-year-old woman who presented with a clinical picture that was suggestive of anterior arteritic ischemic optic neuropathy due to giant cell arteritis (GCA), but was found to have calciphylaxis confirmed by histologic examination. When calciphylaxis affects the blood supply to the eye, commonly it causes sudden vision loss, pallid optic disk edema, and a relative afferent pupillary defect

Calciphylaxis is a rare but feared condition thought to related to derangements in calcium and phosphorus metabolism. The syndrome has a predilection for obese women receiving dialysis for chronic renal failure (1, 2). Patients develop painful violaceous lesions in the subcutis, which can lead to ulceration and wound-related sepsis. In severe cases, amputation is required for the gangrenous involved extremity (3). We present two cases of calciphylaxis with similar clinical presentations and physical findings.

BACKGROUND: Calciphylaxis is a rare syndrome of vascular calcification with subsequent cutaneous and tissue necrosis. It usually manifests as a complication of end-stage renal failure, affecting 1 to 4% of long-term dialysis patients. Very exceptionally, it can occur without chronic renal failure.
OBJECTIVE: The goal of this study was to discuss an exceptional case of extensive calciphylaxis in the absence of chronic renal failure and its successful management.
METHODS: We present a case of a 31-year-old woman with extensive proximal, ulcerated calciphylaxis without associated chronic renal

A 51-year-old woman on peritoneal dialysis for chronic renal failure secondary to diabetic and nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug nephropathy was referred for a Tc-99m MDP bone scan to assess firm subcutaneous plaques in the sacral and gluteal regions. This showed extensive superficial tracer localization in the subcutaneous tissues as well as visceral tracer activity in the myocardium, lungs, stomach, and kidneys. These findings were typical for calciphylaxis (calcific uremic arteriolopathy), a form of metastatic calcification encountered in patients with chronic renal failure that is charac

Two male patients with chronic renal failure maintained on hemodialysis developed progressive clinical features of ischemic necrosis (so called calciphylaxis) of their extremities and penis. Both patients died. In one patient, penectomy provided tissue for histopathologic examination and there were changes of small artery calcification. A role of iron overload on the production of calciphylaxis is reviewed. This report is perhaps the first in nephrology literature on the occurrence of calciphylaxis involving penis and prepuce.

Nephrogenic calciphylaxis is associated with multiple risk factors including long-term dialysis dependence, hyperphosphatemia, hypercalcemia, parathyroid hormone derangements, vitamin K deficiency, obesity, diabetes mellitus, warfarin use, and female sex. Bariatric surgery is known to cause altered absorption, leading to mineral and hormonal abnormalities in addition to nutritional deficiency. Prior case reports on calciphylaxis development following bariatric surgery have been published, though are limited in number. We report a case series of five bariatric patients from a single institution

Calcinosis represents a severe complication of several autoimmune disorders. Soft-tissue calcifications have been classified into five major types: dystrophic, metastatic, idiopathic, iatrogenic, and calciphylaxis. Autoimmune diseases are usually associated with dystrophic calcifications, including calcinosis cutis, occurring in damaged or devitalized tissues in the presence of normal serum levels of calcium and phosphate. In particular, calcinosis cutis has been described in dermatomyositis, polymyositis, juvenile dermatomyositis, systemic sclerosis, systemic lupus erythematosus, primary Sjög

Calciphylaxis is a serious and rare medical condition that leads to substantial clinical manifestations including pain, creating perioperative and treatment challenges. No standard treatment protocol exists nor are comprehensive guidelines available for perioperative management of patients with calciphylaxis. In this review, we evaluate existing literature (January 2000 to May 2021) with the aim to offer guidance for treating patients with this challenging disease through the perioperative period. Although no therapies are currently considered standard for treating calciphylaxis, multiple inte
