[Mechanism of action of fluorides in local/topical application].

The marked caries reduction in many countries over the last two decades is thought to be mainly the result of the widespread and frequent use of low concentrations of fluorides mainly via toothpastes. This article gives a review on fluoride sources in the oral cavity and discusses the physiochemical mechanisms by which fluoride interacts with enamel during the caries process and its reversal. From this review it becomes clear that fluoride incorporated into the enamel mineral during tooth development has little effect on the caries process. It is the fluoride incorporated posteruptively and in

Effect of vitamin D in fluoride-treated rats.

Fluoridated drinking water (30 mg and 100 mg F per liter) was used to induce rachitic changes in rats fed a vitamin D free diet containing calcium and phosphorus in a ratio of 1 : 1. Supplements of vitamin D3 (70 IU of cholecalciferol per week) completely prevented the rachitogenic effects of fluoride. This protective effect occurred despite evidence that vitamin D enhanced the intestinal absorption of fluoride.

Fluoride Mode of Action: Once There Was an Observant Dentist . .

The discovery and implementation of fluoride in the prevention of dental caries is often praised as one of the most important achievements in health care. In the early 20th century, it took 30 y to identify fluoride as the cause of enamel mottling but also of reduced caries prevalence in a population drinking water containing fluoride. Similarly, from 1960 to 1990, it took major efforts to unravel the working mode of fluoride in such detail that a rational scheme of caries prevention could be formulated. This article describes the scientific struggle leading to a consensus on the topic. For a

Stability against brushing abrasion and the erosion-protective effect of different fluoride compounds.

This study aimed to analyse the impact of brushing on the protective effect of different fluoride solutions on enamel and dentin erosion. Bovine enamel and dentin specimens were rinsed once with TiF4, AmF, SnF2 (0.5 M F, 2 min) or water (control). Specimens were either left unbrushed or brushed with 10, 20, 50, 100 or 500 brushing strokes in an automatic brushing machine (2 N, non-fluoridated toothpaste slurry). Ten specimens per group were eroded with hydrochloric acid (HCl) (pH 2.3) for 60 s, and calcium release into the acid was determined by atomic absorption spectroscopy. Additionally, en

Bilateral fractures of femoral neck in patients with moderate renal failure receiving fluoride for spinal osteoporosis.

Two patients with moderate renal failure sustained spontaneous bilateral hip fractures during treatment with fluoride, calcium, and vitamin D for osteoporosis. They had been taking sodium fluoride (40-60 mg/day) for 11 and 21 months, respectively. Histological examination of a specimen of the bone showed severe fluorosis in the first case, and quantitative analysis of bone showed osteomalacia and skeletal fluorosis in the other case. These abnormalities were considered to be the consequence of excessive retention of fluoride due to renal insufficiency. As bilateral femoral neck fractures are v

Solidification/stabilization of spent cathode carbon from aluminum electrolysis by vitric, kaolin and calcification agent: fluorides immobilization and cyanides decomposition.

Spent cathode carbon (SCC) is a hazardous waste containing fluorides and cyanides from aluminum electrolysis. Many literatures have focused on SCC leaching; however, SCC hazard-free treatment remains understudied. This article used 10.0 g raw SCC sample to explore the vitric/kaolin solidification and calcium stabilization of SCC, and analyze their hazard-free mechanisms by the methods of XRD and SEM. The leached fluorides were all below the Chinese identification standard for hazardous wastes (GB5085.3-2007), whether at 750/950 °C for 60 min above 8.0 g vitric, or at 1200 °C for 120 min with a

Differences in loosely bound fluoride formation and anticaries effect of resin-based fluoride varnishes.

OBJECTIVE.  Our in vitro study evaluated calcium fluoride formation in enamel and the anticaries effect of seven resin-based varnishes under cariogenic challenge. METHODS.  Enamel blocks were subjected to pH cycling. The experimental groups received fluoride varnish application, the positive control received topical fluoride gel treatment, and the negative control did not receive any treatment. The pH cycling surface hardness (SH1 ) and integrated loss of subsurface hardness (ΔKHN) were then determined. We measured the amount of fluoride released into the demineralizing and remineralizing (DE-

Histomorphometric analysis of a calcaneal stress fracture: a possible complication of fluoride therapy for osteoporosis.

Pain and swelling of the large joints of the lower limbs occur in about 33% of patients receiving sodium fluoride, calcium, and vitamin D therapy. In a previous study we described radiographic and scintigraphic features suggesting that these symptoms are due to juxtaarticular stress fractures. We now report the histologic features of one such lesion in a calcaneum of a patient receiving fluoride, calcium, and 1 alpha-vitamin D therapy for postmenopausal osteoporosis. Bone biopsy after tetracycline double labeling showed a trabecular fissure fracture and large intratrabecular resorption cavitie

Rational use of fluorides in caries prevention. A concept based on possible cariostatic mechanisms.

The aim of this review has been to suggest that future fluoride preventive programs should be based on what is at present known about the possible cariostatic mechanisms of fluoride. The relative role of enamel fluoride in caries prevention has become increasingly questioned during the last two decades. No significant relationship has been demonstrated between caries experience of the individual and fluoride content of the enamel. Furthermore, the fluoride content in surface enamel between teeth developed in low and "optimal" fluoride areas is too small to explain any significant effect on dis

Fluoride released from orthodontic bonding agents alters the enamel surface and inhibits enamel demineralization in vitro.

In this study, we examined two fluoride-releasing orthodontic agents in respect to fluoride release, enamel demineralization inhibition, as well as alterations observed on the enamel surface after their use. Fluoride release was found to occur in the highest concentrations within the first 24 hours for both materials examined. After this period, a dramatic decline in fluoride release was observed in both adhesives, and after 90 days no fluoride was detectable. Both fluoride-releasing materials showed significant differences on enamel demineralization around the brackets when compared with a co

Remineralization potential of fluoridated and non-fluoridated toothpastes on induced dental caries: A comparative in vitro analysis.

Dental caries is a global concern marked by enamel demineralization due to bacterial activity. This in vitro study compared the remineralization efficacy of fluoridated and non-fluoridated dentifrices. Fifty demineralized premolars were divided into five groups and treated for 30 days. Nano hydroxyapatite demonstrated the highest surface microhardness improvement, followed by sodium fluoride, calcium sucrose phosphate and EnamelMax. All tested agents showed remineralizing potential, with nano-hydroxyapatite being the most effective.

Temporal Changes in Coronary 18F-Fluoride Plaque Uptake in Patients with Coronary Atherosclerosis.

Coronary 18F-sodium fluoride (18F-fluoride) uptake is a marker of both atherosclerotic disease activity and disease progression. It is currently unknown whether there are rapid temporal changes in coronary 18F-fluoride uptake and whether these are more marked in those with clinically unstable coronary artery disease. This study aimed to determine the natural history of coronary 18F-fluoride uptake over 12 mo in patients with either advanced chronic coronary artery disease or a recent myocardial infarction. Methods: Patients with established multivessel coronary artery disease and either chroni

Effect of fluoride treatment on the fracture rate in postmenopausal women with osteoporosis.

Although fluoride increases bone mass, the newly formed bone may have reduced strength. To assess the effect of fluoride treatment on the fracture rate in osteoporosis, we conducted a four-year prospective clinical trial in 202 postmenopausal women with osteoporosis and vertebral fractures who were randomly assigned to receive sodium fluoride (75 mg per day) or placebo. All received a calcium supplement (1500 mg per day). Sixty-six women in the fluoride group and 69 women in the placebo group completed the trial. As compared with the placebo group, the treatment group had increases in median b

Dietary Fluoride Intake and Associated Skeletal and Dental Fluorosis in School Age Children in Rural Ethiopian Rift Valley.

An observational study was conducted to determine dietary fluoride intake, diet, and prevalence of dental and skeletal fluorosis of school age children in three fluorosis endemic districts of the Ethiopian Rift Valley having similar concentrations of fluoride (F) in drinking water (~5 mg F/L). The duplicate plate method was used to collect foods consumed by children over 24 h from 20 households in each community (n = 60) and the foods, along with water and beverages, were analyzed for fluoride (F) content. Prevalence of dental and skeletal fluorosis was determined using presence of clinical sy

Study on defluorination performance and mechanism of Fe-Al modified oyster shell substrate coupled with microbially induced calcium precipitation for enhanced ecological floating beds.

Fluorine is the most reactive nonmetallic element. Low fluoride concentrations in drinking water prevent dental caries, while excessive fluoride leads to fluorosis. To overcome the low fluoride (F⁻) removal efficiency and high cost of conventional ecological floating beds (EFBs), this study developed two slow-release materials (carbon-releasing and calcium-releasing) and fabricated an Fe-Al modified substrate primarily using oyster shells as the raw material, while integrating microbial-induced calcium precipitation technology to enhance the treatment efficiency of the "substrate-microbe" syst

Deposition of loosely bound and firmly bound fluorides on tooth enamel by an acidic gel containing fluorosilicate and monocalcium phosphate monohydrate.

The amounts of loosely bound fluoride (F) deposited on human enamel by 4-min and 2-hour treatments with either acidulated phosphate fluoride (APF) or a monocalcium phosphate monohydrate and sodium hexafluorosilicate (MCPM-SHFS)-containing gel were measured with the use of a constant-composition F washing method. Enamel biopsies conducted before treatment and after washing were used to determine the firmly bound F uptake. The results showed that the MCPM-SHFS treatments produced significantly more loosely bound F than did the APF treatments. The 4-min treatment with either APF or MCPM-SHFS did

Fluoride-induced fractures: relation to osteogenic effect.

The possible effects of fluoride in inducing fractures were studied in 61 patients treated with sodium fluoride (NaF), 40-60 mg daily in combination with calcium and vitamin D. Nine patients developed the fluoride-(F) related lower extremity pain syndrome. Four other patients had stress fractures associated with trauma. Seven of the 61 patients had 10 upper femur fractures of which 5 were stress fractures. The bone mineral mass of the central skeleton including the hips was measured by neutron activation and the results expressed as a calcium bone index (CaBI) which normalizes the results to t
