Autonomic nervous system flexibility for understanding brain aging.

A recent call was made for autonomic nervous system (ANS) measures as digital health markers for early detection of Alzheimer's disease and related dementia (AD/ADRD). Nevertheless, contradictory or inconclusive findings exist. To help advance understanding of ANS' role in dementia, we draw upon aging and dementia-related literature, and propose a framework that centers on the role of ANS flexibility to guide future work on application of ANS function to differentiating the degree and type of dementia-related brain pathologies. We first provide a brief review of literature within the past 10 y

Maternal emulsifier consumption programs offspring metabolic and neuropsychological health in mice.

Modern lifestyle is associated with a major consumption of ultra-processed foods (UPF) due to their practicality and palatability. The ingestion of emulsifiers, a main additive in UPFs, has been related to gut inflammation, microbiota dysbiosis, adiposity, and obesity. Maternal unbalanced nutritional habits during embryonic and perinatal stages perturb offspring's long-term metabolic health, thus increasing obesity and associated comorbidity risk. However, whether maternal emulsifier consumption influences developmental programming in the offspring remains unknown. Here, we show that, in mice,

Telemedical Concepts for Heart Failure Patients Treated with a Wearable Cardioverter Defibrillator.

Over the last few decades, implantable defibrillators have become an established method of treating malign cardiac arrhythmias. There are some situations, however, in which it would be premature to implant a permanent defibrillator. In such cases, a wearable cardioverter defibrillator (WCD) can provide temporary relief and protect patients from life-threatening cardiac arrhythmias. Treatment with WCD is now included in national and international guidelines. Nevertheless, there are still some deficits in connection with WCD, especially regarding rescue chain optimization. For example, there is

Building Global Epidemiology and Response Capacity with Field Epidemiology Training Programs.

More than ever, competent field epidemiologists are needed worldwide. As known, new, and resurgent communicable diseases increase their global impact, the International Health Regulations and the Global Health Security Agenda call for sufficient field epidemiologic capacity in every country to rapidly detect, respond to, and contain public health emergencies, thereby ensuring global health security. To build this capacity, for >35 years the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has worked with countries around the globe to develop Field Epidemiology Training Programs (FETPs). FETP trai

Improving postoperative outcomes in gynecologic oncology through a standardized telehealth intervention: experience from an urban safety-net hospital system.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the impact of a standardized postoperative phone call program on outcomes among patients undergoing gynecologic oncology surgery at an urban safety-net tertiary care center. METHODS: As a quality improvement initiative, routine postoperative calls were implemented in January 2025 for all surgical patients on the gynecologic oncology service at our center. Nursing staff contacted patients 48-72 h after discharge using a structured questionnaire. We conducted a retrospective cohort study of patients who underwent surgery in the 4 months before and after implementation (9/

Call-tracking data and the public health response to bioterrorism-related anthrax.

After public notification of confirmed cases of bioterrorism-related anthrax, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's Emergency Operations Center responded to 11,063 bioterrorism-related telephone calls from October 8 to November 11, 2001. Most calls were inquiries from the public about anthrax vaccines (58.4%), requests for general information on bioterrorism prevention (14.8%), and use of personal protective equipment (12.0%); 882 telephone calls (8.0%) were referred to the state liaison team for follow-up investigation. Of these, 226 (25.6%) included reports of either illness clini

Recent developments in Aspergillus fumigatus research: diversity, drugs, and disease.

SUMMARYAdvances in modern medical therapies for many previously intractable human diseases have improved patient outcomes. However, successful disease treatment outcomes are often prevented due to invasive fungal infections caused by the environmental mold Aspergillus fumigatus. As contemporary antifungal therapies have not experienced the same robust advances as other medical therapies, defining mechanisms of A. fumigatus disease initiation and progression remains a critical research priority. To this end, the World Health Organization recently identified A. fumigatus as a research priority h

Staff Safety and Experiences with Electronic Safety Devices among a Sample of Veterans Affairs Homeless Service Providers.

The current survey examined Veterans Affairs (VA) homeless service providers' experiences with electronic personal protective safety devices (EPPSDs). The survey was completed by 153 homeless service providers based at VA medical centers in New York, New Jersey, and Florida. The survey asked about feelings of safety while performing work duties, safety incidents, use of EPPSDs, and experiences with EPPSDs. Forty-three percent of respondents reported using an EPPSD at work. Respondents who used an EPPSD described using the technology primarily to check in while working in the community. Overall

From the margins to the center: Transforming cardiovascular care for women.

Cardiovascular disease (CVD) remains the leading cause of death among women worldwide, with significant disparities in prevalence, outcomes, and care. Despite these alarming statistics, research on women's heart health remains underfunded and poorly prioritized, due in part to the historic exclusion of women from clinical trials and biomedical research. This editorial will highlight the scope of CVD in women, explore sex- and gender-specific risk factors such as gestational diabetes, early menopause, and psychosocial stress, and underscore barriers to quality care including implicit bias and s

HIV/AIDS and the African-American Community 2018: a Decade Call to Action.

HIV/AIDS disproportionately affects African-Americans more than any other racial or ethnic group in the USA. Currently representing only 12% of the US population, African-Americans now comprise close to half of the total reported HIV/AIDS cases in the USA according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention since the initial reporting of HIV/AIDS. In this paper, we examined the prevalence and current direction of the HIV/AIDS epidemic in the African-American community especially in comparison to our first call to action in 2008. The situation remains dire and broader attention is necess

The versatility of the basic microscope system in otolaryngology.

The operating microscope is now an essential tool for a large number of surgical procedures in a wide range of disciplines. At many medical centers, the optical equipment is often shared by surgeons from several disciplines. The expansion of microsurgical interest will continue to be interdisciplinary in the future, and this will call for microscope systems that are sufficiently versatile, both optically and mechanically, to meet the needs of surgery on a wide variety of anatomic structures. The development of the current range of microsurgical procedures in otolaryngology is presented to illu

Pattern of chlorine gas exposures reported to Texas poison control centers, 2000 through 2005.

Exposure to chlorine gas can result in serious adverse effects including death. From 2000 through 2005, approximately 9000 chlorine gas exposures were reported annually to poison control centers in the United States. Because a review of the literature failed to produce any Texas-specific data concerning chlorine gas exposures, we conducted a retrospective review of Texas poison control center calls and found that 2643 calls related to human exposures to chlorine gas occurred during these 6 years. The number of these calls increased during this period. Of the exposures, 750% occurred at home an

ACT To Sustain: Adoptive Cell Therapy To Sustain Access to Non-Commercialized Genetically Modified Cell Therapies.

Genetically modified cell therapies (GMCT), particularly immune effector cells (IEC) such as chimeric receptor antigen (CAR) T cells, have shown promise in curing cancer and rare diseases after a single treatment course. Following close behind CAR T approvals are GMCT based on hematopoietic stem cells, such as products developed for hemoglobinopathies and other disorders. Academically sponsored GMCT products, often developed in academic centers without industry involvement, face challenges in sustaining access after completion of early phase studies when there is no commercial partner invested

Empowering Emergency Responders to Treat on Scene Alleviates Hospital Strain During Disaster Events.

Disasters often lead to increased generator use, resulting in carbon monoxide poisonings (COP) and burn injuries that can overwhelm regional burn centers. Following Hurricane Ida, emergency medical services (EMS) providers in southeastern Louisiana were empowered to treat minor COP and burn injuries on the scene without hospital transport. This study evaluated the impact of that policy. Using EMS and Louisiana Emergency Response Network (LERN) data, we analyzed EMS calls from 3 periods surrounding Hurricane Ida's landfall on August 29, 2021: pre-Ida (07/08-08/25), mid-Ida (08/26-09/08), and po
