Discovery of N-Benzyl-4-(1-bromonaphthalen-2-yl)oxybutan-1-amine as a Potential Antifungal Agent against Sporidia Growth and Teliospore Germination of Sporisorium scitamineum.

The cultivation of sugar cane using perennial roots is the primary planting method, which is one of the reasons for the serious occurrence of sugar cane smut disease caused by the basidiomycetous fungus Sporisorium scitamineum in the sugar cane perennial root planting area. Consequently, it is crucial to eliminate pathogens from perennial sugar cane buds. In this study, we found that MAP kinase Hog1 is necessary for heat stress resistance. Subsequent investigations revealed a significant reduction in the expression of the heat shock protein 104-encoding gene, SsHSP104, in the ss1hog1Δ mutant.

Failure of cryptorchidism to suppress fertility in a tropical rodent.

The cane mouse (Zygodontomys brevicauda) breeds year-round on the hot llanos of Venezuela, only 8 degrees above the equator. The reproductive responses of the males of this species to heat were compared with those of a temperature zone rodent, the white-footed mouse (Peromyscus leucopus). When tested at different ambient temperatures, the movement of the testis in relation to the scrotum was similar in the two species, but the cane mouse's testis proved to be much more resistant to maintenance at core body temperature. In two experiments, cryptorchid cane mice experienced only a 24% and a 5% d

Candy cocaine esophagus.

Reversible thermal injury to the esophagus from drinking boiling-hot liquids has been reported to produce alternating pink and white linear bands that impart a "candy-cane" appearance to the inner esophageal wall. This injury has been associated with chest pain, dysphagia, odynophagia, and abdominal pain. We describe a case of candy-cane esophagus caused by thermal injury from smoking freebase cocaine, associated with left shoulder and arm pain, diaphoresis, hypotension, and transient cardiac ischemia. This case illustrates the importance of considering candy cane esophagus in the evaluation o

Delayed cervical spinal cord injury after high voltage electrical injury: a case report.

High voltage electrical injuries usually cause devastating consequences for patients, most of which result in permanent disability. Spinal cord injury (SCI) caused by high voltage electrical injury is uncommon in the literature. We present a 29-year-old male patient who was diagnosed as having delayed SCI after high voltage electrical injury. The patient developed muscle weakness in the lower extremities with the loss of pinprick sensation below the fifth cervical spinal segment, 2 days after the high voltage electrical injury. Magnetic resonance imaging of the brain, cervical and thoracic spi

Development of the Modified Four Square Step Test and its reliability and validity in people with stroke.

Adults with stroke have difficulty avoiding obstacles when walking, especially when a time constraint is imposed. The Four Square Step Test (FSST) evaluates dynamic balance by requiring individuals to step over canes in multiple directions while being timed, but many people with stroke are unable to complete it. The purposes of this study were to (1) modify the FSST by replacing the canes with tape so that more persons with stroke could successfully complete the test and (2) examine the reliability and validity of the modified version. Fifty-five subjects completed the Modified FSST (mFSST) by

Neuron-specific enolase-like immunoreactivity in the vertebrate retina: selective labelling of Müller cells in Anura.

Neuron-specific enolase (NSE) immunocytochemistry was carried out in retinae of goldfish, axolotl, clawed frog, cane toad, lizard, chick, guinea-pig, rabbit, rat, cat and human. With the exception of Anura, strong immunoreactivity was seen in the large ganglion, amacrine cells and horizontal cells of the retina in all of the other species. Photoreceptors were found to be labelled in the rat and human retina and only one cone type in rabbit. Photoreceptor pedicles and ellipsoids were stained in the goldfish and the somata and inner segments of some photoreceptors in axolotl. In the axolotl reti

Clinical evaluation of semiautonomous smart wheelchair architecture (Drive-Safe System) with visually impaired individuals.

Nonambulatory, visually impaired individuals mostly rely on caregivers for their day-to-day mobility needs. The Drive-Safe System (DSS) is a modular, semiautonomous smart wheelchair system aimed at providing independent mobility to people with visual and mobility impairments. In this project, clinical evaluation of the DSS was performed in a controlled laboratory setting with individuals who have visual impairment but no mobility impairment. Their performance using DSS was compared with their performance using a standard cane for navigation assistance. Participants rated their subjective appra

Clinical management of carpal tunnel syndrome in patients with long-term sequelae of poliomyelitis.

Thirty-three patients with long-term sequelae of poliomyelitis with a diagnosis of carpal tunnel syndrome established by either abnormal nerve conduction studies or previous carpal tunnel surgery were surveyed. There was no significant long-term resolution of symptoms in the patients who had surgery (n = 9) or were currently using wrist orthoses (n = 11) compared with patients without such treatment (n = 13). In patients who used a single cane or those who used crutches (N = 10), there was a direct correlation between the hand holding the cane or crutch and the hand in which carpal tunnel synd

Risk factors for median mononeuropathy of the wrist in postpoliomyelitis patients.

There is evidence that chronic cane, crutch, and wheelchair users are at increased risk for developing pain and functional compromise of the wrist and hand. This investigation examined the prevalence and risk factors for median mononeuropathy at the wrist in the postpoliomyelitis population. The medical records of 148 consecutive patients with histories of poliomyelitis were reviewed. Forty-nine percent of this cohort had complaints of wrist pain. The prevalence rate of carpal tunnel syndrome was 22% (n = 33). Age, sex, duration of disability, and work history did not significantly influence t

Plasma potassium may protect sodium pumps of toad hearts from an endogenous inhibitor.

Resibufogenin (3-hydroxy-14,15-epoxy-20,22-dienolide glycoside) is a potent sodium pump inhibitor present in toad toxin. It is present in the skin of the cane toad (Bufo marinus) at a concentration equivalent to ouabain of approximately 1 mM. Because toads, like other amphibians, have permeable skin, resibufogenin is also found in high concentrations in the blood. In the cane toad the blood concentration is estimated to be 1 microM (D. Resolving conflicts in task demands during balance recovery: does holding an object inhibit compensatory grasping?

The ability to reach and "grasp" (grip or touch) structures for support in reaction to instability is an important element of the postural repertoire. It is unclear, however, how the central nervous system (CNS) resolves the potential conflict between holding an object and the need to release the held object and grasp alternative support, particularly if the held object is perceived to be relevant to the task of stabilizing the body, e.g. an assistive device. This study examined whether compensatory grasping is inhibited when holding an object, and whether the influence differs when holding an

Strategies for posture transfer adopted by elders during sit-to-stand and stand-to-sit.

This study investigated whether three posture-transfer strategies, No support, Chair-arm, and Cane, were associated with the smallest hip-compressed angle and the smallest ankle-compressed angle during sit-to-stand and stand-to-sit for 12 elders (M age = 81.3 yr., SD = 5.9) who volunteered to participate. Using an optoelectronic movement analyzer, the smallest compressed angles of the hip and ankle were measured during standing up and sitting down. The adopted strategies had significant effects on the smallest hip-compressed angle, but not the smallest ankle-compressed angle. Although cane use

New scoring system at admission to predict walking ability at discharge for patients with hip fracture.

INTRODUCTION: A reliable scoring system that predicts the walking ability of hip fracture patients would be useful for clinicians. Here we developed a scoring system for hip fracture patients and evaluated its predictive ability. HYPOTHESIS: We hypothesized that age, sex, presence of dementia, walking ability before the injury, fracture type, serum hemoglobin level, serum albumin level and interval in days between admission and surgery would be the predictive factors of the walking ability at discharge. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Data from 409 patients who underwent hip fracture surgery were incl

Efficacy of electronic travel aids for the blind and visually impaired during wayfinding.

Independent traveling remains challenging for blind and visually impaired (BVI) individuals. While the white cane is effective at detecting ground-level obstacles, it provides no information about elevated obstacles or object characteristics. Recent technologies have been designed to support navigation as well as object detection. In our study, we compared the performance of 13 BVI participants who separately used two secondary electronic travel aids (ETAs) versus cane use alone. One ETA was a camera-based mobility vest (NOA), and the other was an ultrasonic sensor-based wearable (BuzzClip). P

The Effect of Assistive Devices on the Accuracy of Fitbits in Healthy Individuals: A Brief Report.

Our study explored the accuracy of Fitbit recorded step count during the use of an assistive device (two-wheeled walker and standard cane) at various body positions (wrists, hips, and ankles). Participants (n = 11) ambulated an obstacle course (50 m total, including turns and a step up/down) a total of three times (two-wheeled walker, standard cane, and a deviceless control trial). Fitbit generated step counts (at the wrists, hips, and ankles) were then compared to the individual's "actual" step count captured through video analysis. During the cane trial and the deviceless trial, all position

Evaluation of a smartphone application for self-rehabilitation after anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction during a COVID-19 lockdown.

BACKGROUND: Rehabilitation after surgery is a crucial process that governs the final functional outcome. The self-rehabilitation smartphone application Doct'up (Healing SAS, Lyon, France) is designed for patients who have had anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction surgery. In France in the spring of 2020, the lockdown mandated due to the COVID-19 pandemic prevented patients from seeing their physiotherapists for 2 months. The objective of this study was to compare the clinical outcomes in two groups of patients who underwent ACL reconstruction surgery: in one group, surgery performed

Evaluation of an Audio-haptic Sensory Substitution Device for Enhancing Spatial Awareness for the Visually Impaired.

SIGNIFICANCE: Visually impaired participants were surprisingly fast in learning a new sensory substitution device, which allows them to detect obstacles within a 3.5-m radius and to find the optimal path in between. Within a few hours of training, participants successfully performed complex navigation as well as with the white cane. PURPOSE: Globally, millions of people live with vision impairment, yet effective assistive devices to increase their independence remain scarce. A promising method is the use of sensory substitution devices, which are human-machine interfaces transforming visual i
