The dissolved carbon concentration, which is responsible for aquatic ecosystem productivity and water quality, is tightly coupled with hydrological processes. Excess dissolved carbon may exacerbate eutrophication and hypoxia in aquatic ecosystems and lead to deterioration of water quality. Storm events dominate the dynamics of dissolved carbon concentrations, and this nonlinear behavior exhibits significant time scale dependence. Here, we identified inter- and intra-event variability in the dissolved carbon concentration-discharge (C-Q) relationship in an agriculture-intensive catchment. The d

Many industrial chemicals that are produced from fossil resources could be manufactured more sustainably through fermentation. Here we describe the development of a carbon-negative fermentation route to producing the industrially important chemicals acetone and isopropanol from abundant, low-cost waste gas feedstocks, such as industrial emissions and syngas. Using a combinatorial pathway library approach, we first mined a historical industrial strain collection for superior enzymes that we used to engineer the autotrophic acetogen Clostridium autoethanogenum. Next, we used omics analysis, kine

As global warming intensifies, the low-carbon transformation of the iron and steel industry becomes crucial for achieving "dual carbon" goals. This study provided a systematic review of the carbon footprint calculation methods for the iron and steel industry based on life cycle assessment (LCA) principles and demonstrates the application of LCA in the source, process, end-use, as well as in cleaner production stages of steel production through specific cases. Results indicated that raw material acquisition contributed 3.9-8.8 % of carbon emissions (primarily from electricity consumption) throu

In this study, we investigated how iron limitation alters central metabolism in Mycobacterium tuberculosis using metabolomics and stable isotope tracing. Our findings reveal a well-orchestrated metabolic programme to enable Krebs cycle activity despite the inefficient action of its iron-dependent enzymes. Under such conditions, carbon flux through the oxidative branch of the Krebs cycle is stalled, resulting in the accumulation of metabolites that are partially secreted. As a result, carbon flux from glycolysis is partially diverted to the reductive branch of the Krebs cycle to support the pro

Direct observations from submersible dives off the Galapagos Islands have revealed that Pelagothuria natatrix, the only known holopelagic echinoderm, actively intercepts settling particles well before they can reach the deep seafloor, thereby short-circuiting the typical downward flux of organic carbon generated in the photic zone.

A comprehensive optimization of known prokaryotic autotrophic carbon dioxide (CO2) fixation pathways is presented that evaluates all their possible variants under different environmental conditions. This was achieved through a computational methodology recently developed that considers the trade-offs between energy efficiency (yield) and growth rate, allowing us to evaluate candidate metabolic modifications in silico for microbial conversions. The results revealed the superior configurations in terms of both yield (efficiency) and rate (driving force). The pathways from anaerobic organisms app

Forest plantations cover large areas globally, but their climate benefits remain unclear, hampering projections of the future land carbon (C) sink. Here, we combined an unprecedented 14-years series of eddy-covariance CO2 fluxes (net ecosystem productivity, NEP) with biometric measurements to explore C balance in a commercial Eucalyptus plantation in Brazil across three rotations. The plantation exhibited a 14-year average and maximum annual NEP of 9.8 and 20.2 MgC ha-1 y-1, respectively, which ranks among the highest documented forest productivity. The amount of time before the forest recaptu

Carbon fixation potential critically determines the overall performance, scalability, and economic viability of biological carbon utilization systems. Recently, microalgal attached carbon fixation systems have attracted worldwide attention for their high fixation efficiency and biomass yield. However, challenges remain due to insufficient mechanistic understanding to guide further improvements, alongside unpredictable biomass quality changes from trade-offs. This study developed a positive regulation strategy to boost carbon fixation and biomass production in Chlorella pyrenoidosa while clarif

Transforming building materials from net life-cycle CO2e emitters to carbon sinks is a key pathway towards decarbonizing the industrial sector. Current life-cycle assessments of materials (particularly "low-carbon" materials) often focus on cradle-to-gate emissions, which can exclude emissions and uptake (i.e., fluxes) later in the materials' life-cycle. Further, conventional CO2e emission characterization disregards the dynamic effects of the timing of emissions and uptake on cumulative radiative forcing from processes like manufacturing, biomass growth, and the decadal carbon storage in long

The eastern Arabian Sea (EAS) experiences seasonal nutrient availability and productivity shifts driven by the Indian monsoon, influencing microbial contributions to biogeochemical cycles. This study explores carbon, nitrogen and sulfur cycling using metagenome-assembled genomes (MAGs) from water samples collected at chlorophyll maxima (C-Max) depths during non-monsoon and monsoon seasons. A total of 49 high-quality MAGs were reconstructed from 12 metagenomic samples, including four novel lineages from the phyla Pseudomonadota and Bacteroidota. These MAGs revealed distinct seasonal shifts in m

Understanding how trees allocate assimilated carbon to growth is essential for projecting forest carbon sequestration. However, the temporal dynamics of the relative roles of carbon assimilation (source) versus cambial activity (sink) in regulating tree growth remain poorly understood. Using multiple gross and net primary productivity (GPP and NPP) data and tree-ring width records from 2126 sites worldwide, we quantified the temporal trend of the correlation between carbon assimilation and tree growth (R trend) over the past three decades. We found that the R trend varied substantially across

Microcystis aeruginosa (M. aeruginosa), a dominant bloom-forming cyanobacterium, performs efficient photosynthetic carbon fixation and in situ aerobic methane (CH4) production simultaneously, playing a significant role in regulating the carbon source-sink in inland waters. However, how CO2 scenarios and nutrient levels interact to regulate the carbon fixation and emission of M. aeruginosa remains unclear. Here, we conducted a fully crossed experiment with three atmospheric CO2 concentrations (ambient 420 ppm, 650 ppm, and 1000 ppm) and three nutrient levels to explore growth, photosynthesis, a

The continuous rise in greenhouse gas concentrations poses an irreversible threat to the earth system, while soil depletion and degradation are gradually eroding the basis of human survival. Therefore, the development of efficient technologies that combine carbon reduction and soil improvement is imperative. Although various carbon fixation and soil remediation methods have emerged in recent years, most of them have limitations such as single effects, complex operations, and high costs. This study proposed and validated a composite system based on biochar synergistic microbially induced carbon

In many cancers, stably elevated MYC levels drive sustained activation of anabolic programs and the cell cycle, creating opportunities for the synthetic-lethal targeting of MYChigh tumors. Enhanced mitochondrial respiration is a hallmark of MYC overexpressing cancer cells. Mitochondrial respiration sustains the TCA cycle by regenerating NAD+ through complex I-mediated oxidation of NADH, supporting the anabolic demand of MYC-driven cells. Metabolic carbon tracing reveals that MYC shifts the TCA cycle carbon source from glucose to glutamine. Inhibition of the glutamine-fueled TCA cycle using NAD

Over the past three decades, assessments of the contemporary global carbon budget consistently report a strong net land carbon sink. Here, we review evidence supporting this paradigm and quantify the differences in global and Northern Hemisphere estimates of the net land sink derived from atmospheric inversion and satellite-derived vegetation biomass time series. Our analysis, combined with additional synthesis, supports a hypothesis that the net land sink is substantially weaker than commonly reported. At a global scale, our estimate of the net land carbon sink is 0.8 ± 0.7 petagrams of carbo

The biological carbon pump (BCP) associated with aquatic photosynthesis in karst surface waters converts dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC) into organic carbon. In the context of global climate change, BCP could be an important carbon sink mechanism, ultimately regulating atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2) and mitigating climate change. Because of the high DIC and pH, and low dissolved CO2 [CO2 (aq)], the hydrochemical characteristics of karst surface water bodies cause C limitation in BCP efficiency. The effect of CO2 fertilization on water bodies can promote autochthonous production, thereby cre

Climate change is expected to increase the intensity and frequency of droughts and heavy rainfall events globally, with significant consequences on the terrestrial carbon cycle. One of the most critical yet highly variable components of the carbon cycle is the soil CO2 pulse triggered by precipitation events in dryland ecosystems. To examine the processes underlying the soil CO2 pulse under changing precipitation patterns, we developed a unique Online Automatic Soil Incubation System (OASIS) that allows (1) accurate manipulation of drying and rewetting regimes; (2) continuous monitoring of soi

Scholars worry that the construction of photovoltaic power plants may result in higher carbon emissions and hinder global carbon neutrality goals. To address these concerns, we established eight observation stations in China to conduct long-term monitoring of meteorological indicators under and between the photovoltaic panels, as well as on natural land outside the plants, while sampling vegetation and soil. Using the Denitrification-DeNitrification Computation(DNDC) model, we simulated and validated the carbon cycling processes of the photovoltaic power plants based on observational data. The

The coccolithophore Helicosphaera carteri is an understudied, yet ecologically and biogeochemically important, marine calcifier. Hence, its response to ocean acidification has implications for ecosystem function and the marine carbon cycle. Here we employed dilute batch cultures featuring a coupled C-system manipulation (295, 444, and 600 μatm CO2) to analyze the response of H. carteri in terms of growth rate and particulate carbon production, two key eco-physiological and biogeochemical parameters. We highlight that both growth rate and organic carbon production are CO2 limited at 295 µatm bu
