Comparison of Epidemiology, Risk Factors, Clinical Presentation and Outcomes of COVID-19 and Seasonal Influenza Among Hospitalized Swiss Children: A Nationwide Prospective Surveillance Study.

BACKGROUND: Although many children infected with severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus type 2 (SARS-CoV-2) or seasonal influenza virus experience a mild course of disease, both infections can lead to hospitalization and, in a subset of children, severe disease requiring intensive care unit (ICU) admission for respiratory or cardiac support. To compare the epidemiology, risk factors, clinical presentation and outcomes of children hospitalized with COVID-19 or seasonal influenza, and to identify factors associated with severe disease. METHODS: Data were collected prospectively within a

Mobilization and Exercise Intervention for Patients With Multiple Myeloma: Clinical Practice Guidelines Endorsed by the Canadian Physiotherapy Association.

ObjectiveIndividuals with multiple myeloma (MM) often have reduced functional performance due to the cancer itself or as a direct side effect of cancer treatments. Physical therapy is a part of cancer rehabilitation; however, no guidelines are available to provide information and direction for physical therapists managing patients with MM. The goal of this guideline is to provide recommendations based on a systematic review and consensus process that physical therapists can use to manage patients with MM.MethodsA systematic review of the literature published until August 2018 was performed in

Enabling exercise prescription for survivors of cancer.

Although exercise is widely recommended for survivors of cancer, readily implementable approaches for evaluating exercise tolerance enabling exercise prescriptions at appropriate levels of cardiovascular exertion are not always available. We evaluated the utility of modified Harvard Step tests within the context of a standard physical examination for fitness evaluation and exercise prescription for survivors of cancer across a range of age, BMI and exercise history. While 52% of presenting individuals with a past cancer diagnosis were able to complete a 3-min test at pace with a reduced 9-in.

Role of Physical Activity and Cardiac Rehabilitation in Patients Undergoing Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transplantation.

Hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) is a standard treatment for several malignancies, and >50,000 HSCT are performed annually worldwide. As survival after HSCT improves, cardiovascular disease and associated risk factors have gained importance as a significant cause of morbidity and mortality in this cohort. In this article, we detail the risk factors for cardiovascular disease and their impact in patients undergoing HSCT. Additionally, we critically review the data on the impact of physical exercise in patients undergoing HSCT. Although limited by significant heterogeneity in metho

Neuromuscular electrical stimulation for physical function maintenance during hematopoietic stem cell transplantation: Study protocol.

Hematopoietic stem cell transplantation is a common life-saving treatment for hematologic malignancies, though can lead to long-term functional impairment, fatigue, muscle atrophy, with decreased quality of life. Although traditional exercise has helped reduce these effects, it is inconsistently recommended and infrequently maintained, and most patients remain sedentary during and after treatment. There is need for alternative rehabilitation strategies, like neuromuscular electrical stimulation, that may be more amenable to the capabilities of hematopoietic stem cell transplant recipients. Whole body vibration training during allogeneic hematopoietic cell transplantation-the effects on patients' physical capacity.

Patients undergoing allogeneic hematopoietic cell transplantation (alloHCT) experience a considerable decline in physical and psycho-social capacity. Since whole body vibration (WBV) is known to efficiently stimulate the neuromuscular system and enhance cardiorespiratory fitness and muscle strength in frail individuals, we hypothesized that WBV would maintain various physical and psychological capacities in patients during alloHCT. Seventy-one patients were randomly allocated to either an intervention group (IG) doing WBV or an active control group (CG) doing mobilization exercises five times

Treating Lows: Management of Orthostatic Hypotension.

AbstractOrthostatic hypotension is a prevalent clinical condition, caused by heterogenous etiologies and associated with significant morbidity and mortality. Management is particularly challenging in patients with uncontrolled hypertension. A thorough assessment is needed to draw an appropriate management plan. The treatment aims to improve postural symptoms while minimizing side effects and reducing iatrogenic exacerbation of supine hypertension. A personalized management plan including rationalizing medications, patient education, identification, and avoidance of triggers, as well as nonphar

Lifestyle considerations in multiple myeloma.

As the prognosis for multiple myeloma (MM) has significantly improved and patients remain on therapy longer, there is a need for supportive care interventions to optimize patient quality of life (QOL) and functional status over the course of cancer treatment. MM is characterized by a significant symptom burden and a relatively lower QOL compared to other cancers. This review evaluates the role of healthy lifestyle behaviors in improving both the physical functioning and psychological well-being of the MM population. We (1) describe the current literature on physical activity, weight management

Adaptation of the PERCEPT myeloma prehabilitation trial to virtual delivery: changes in response to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Introduction and objectiveResearch activity was impacted by the novel COVID-19 pandemic, the PERCEPT myeloma trial was no exception. This pilot randomised trial delivered a face-to-face exercise intervention prior to and during autologous stem cell transplantation (ASCT) in myeloma patients, as a consequence of COVID-19 it required significant adaptions to continue. This brief communication describes how the previously published study protocol was adapted for virtual delivery. In addition, we highlight the challenge of continuing the study which was embedded within a clinical pathway also impa

Cardiovascular Considerations in Patients Undergoing Hematopoietic Cell Transplantation.

Opinion statementCardiac dysfunction is a serious adverse effect of cancer therapies that can interfere with quality of life and impact long-term survival in patients with cancer. Hematopoietic cell transplantation is a potentially curative therapy for many advanced hematologic malignancies and bone marrow failure syndromes, however is associated with several short- and long-term adverse effects, including importantly, cardiovascular toxicities. The goal of this review article is to describe the cardiovascular events that may develop before, during, and after hematopoietic cell transplantation

Influencing factors of cardiorespiratory fitness in allogeneic stem cell transplant candidates prior to transplantation.

PurposeCardiorespiratory fitness (CRF) seems to be prognostic prior to allogeneic stem cell transplantation (allo-HSCT). Influencing factors of CRF in allo-HSCT candidates have not been studied so far. Aim was to identify potentially influencing factors on CRF.MethodsTo assess CRF, a maximal cardiopulmonary exercise test (CPET) was performed on average 2.6 ± 7.2 days prior to admission. A regression analysis was conducted, with the following predictors: gender, age, body mass index (BMI), time between last therapy and allo-HSCT (t_Therapies), number of cardiotoxic therapies (n_Cardiotox), numb

Comparative effects of dual-task training versus combined exercise training in water and on land on patients with multiple sclerosis: a study protocol of a randomised factorial trial.

INTRODUCTION: People with multiple sclerosis (PwMS) experience cognitive and motor impairments, including cognitive training and exercise training. This study compares dual task and combined exercise training in water and on land. Water-based training may enhance cognitive and motor function more effectively than land-based training, presenting a promising intervention for PwMS. We explore dual-task training (DTT), including cognitive and motor exercise, with combined exercise in water and on land on the cognition, balance and gait PwMS. METHODS AND ANALYSIS: This is a double-blind 3*2*2 fact

Diagnostic and Prognostic Values of Cardiopulmonary Exercise Testing in Cardiac Amyloidosis.

Cardiac amyloidosis (CA) is a myocardial disease characterized by extracellular amyloid infiltration throughout the heart, resulting in increased myocardial stiffness, and restrictive heart wall chamber behavior. Its diagnosis among patients hospitalized for cardiovascular diseases is becoming increasingly frequent, suggesting improved disease awareness, and higher diagnostic capacities. One predominant functional manifestation of patients with CA is exercise intolerance, objectified by reduced peak oxygen uptake (VO2 peak), and assessed by metabolic cart during cardiopulmonary exercise testin
