Personality in Capuchin Monkeys (Sapajus apella): Comparison of Assessment Methods and Constructs.

Understanding personality in nonhuman primates is critical for advancing theories of individual differences, yet methodological variation remains a major challenge. We examined whether three commonly used approaches-questionnaire ratings, behavioral observations, and experimental tests-capture stable and overlapping personality constructs in 26 captive tufted capuchin monkeys (Sapajus apella). Using Bayesian multivariate mixed models, we retained individual variability to assess temporal stability, cross-context consistency, and inter-method convergence. Behavioral observations revealed concep

Maintenance of Sparganum proliferum in vitro and in experimental animals.

Successful in vitro and in vivo maintenance of Sparganum proliferum is described for the first time. Various experimental animals including hamsters, mice and a monkey were evaluated. Albino mice inoculated either subcutaneously or intraperitoneally allowed the survival and multiplication of larvae for as long as 72 weeks. Intensity of infection was proportional to the length of exposure; however, the number of larvae collected from inoculated animals varied widely when infection lasted for 6 or more months. Inoculation of single larval segments appears as effective as that of complete larvae.

The effect of praziquantel on Schistosoma haematobium, S. japonicum and S. mansoni in primates.

Baboons infected with S. haematobium and vervet monkeys infected with S. japonicum were treated orally with different dosage regimens of 2-cyclohexylcarbonyl-1,2,3,6,7,11b-hexahydro-4H-pyrazino[2,1-a]isoquinolin-4-on e(praziquantel, EMBAY 8440, Biltricide) and were autopsied and perfused 3--4 months after treatment. The results suggest that a single oral dose of 75--100 mg/kg body weight is likely to be effective against S. haematobium in the baboon. Female worms of S. haematobium are apparently more susceptible to the compound than male worms. The classic hepatic shift of adult schistosomes w

A clinical trial of pefloxacin and ofloxacin in lepromatous leprosy.

A 2-month clinical trial of pefloxacin and ofloxacin in previously untreated multibacillary patients was conducted at the Leonard Wood Memorial Leprosy Research Center, Cebu, the Philippines. Treatment with either pefloxacin or ofloxacin resulted in rapid clinical improvement, in this regard pefloxacin appearing somewhat superior. Reactions and side effects were minimal. Single doses of either agent did not result in significant killing of Mycobacterium leprae, but significant bactericidal activity was observed for all fluoroquinolone-treated patients by one week of daily therapy (n = 21), and

Resection of a giant aggressive angiomyxoma in the Philippines.

INTRODUCTION: Medicine for Humanity is a multidisciplinary team of health care professionals, travelling to developing areas throughout the world on medical missions. The following is one of many technically challenging and unique cases presented for treatment. CASE: A 38-year-old woman gradually developed a giant mass arising from the right labium majus, extending into the retroperitoneum. Surgical resection was performed by abdominal and perineal teams. Intraoperative blood loss was approximately 10,000 ml, requiring 18 units of whole blood transfusion-including 6 units acutely donated by m

Breast-feeding and diarrheal morbidity.

This study used a unique longitudinal survey of more than 3000 mother-infant pairs observed from pregnancy through infancy. The sample is representative of infants from the Cebu region of the Philippines. The sequencing of breast-feeding and diarrheal morbidity events was carefully examined in a longitudinal analysis which allowed for the examination of age-specific effects of feeding patterns. Because the work controlled for a wide range of environmental causes of diarrhea, the results can be generalized to other populations with some confidence. The addition to the breast-milk diet of even w

Environmental fluctuations alter the competitive trade-offs of group size in a social primate.

Larger animal groups are widely understood to require more space and expend more energy to mitigate the foraging costs of within-group competition. Yet between-group interactions and shifting resource distributions can obscure links between group size and behaviour, making responses to demographic change difficult to predict. Here, using 33 years of observational data from 12 neighbouring white-faced capuchin (Cebus imitator) groups in Costa Rica, combined with remotely sensed environmental data, we show that within- and between-group competition jointly shape space use, with their relative im

Detection of anti-Leptospira antibodies in captive nonhuman primates from Salvador, Brazil.

Leptospirosis is a widely distributed zoonosis that affects several species of domestic and wild animals. Under captive conditions, Leptospirosis is a potential problem because the physical conditions in most zoos and research centers cannot prevent the captive animals from being exposed to rodents, raccoons, opossums, and other local wildlife that are known carriers. Yet, despite the potential risk, animals that are destined for reintroduction into the wild are not routinely tested for anti-Leptospira antibodies before their release. The purpose of this study was to determine the occurrence o

Creutzfeld-Jakob disease in the province of Siena: two cases transmitted to monkeys.

Two cases of histopathologically documented Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease were observed in the same area of the province of Siena in 1974-1975. The transmission of the disease was obtained through brain homogenates and lymphnodes in one of the two cases. This confirms that the agent is present in other tissues besides the brain and underlines further the analogies between Creutzfeld-Jakob disease and scrapie.

A novel nonsense mutation in the tyrosinase gene is related to the albinism in a capuchin monkey (Sapajus apella).

BACKGROUND: Oculocutaneous Albinism (OCA) is an autosomal recessive inherited condition that affects the pigmentation of eyes, hair and skin. The OCA phenotype may be caused by mutations in the tyrosinase gene (TYR), which expresses the tyrosinase enzyme and has an important role in the synthesis of melanin pigment. The aim of this study was to identify the genetic mutation responsible for the albinism in a captive capuchin monkey, and to describe the TYR gene of normal phenotype individuals. In addition, we identified the subject's species. RESULTS: A homozygous nonsense mutation was identif

Gambling primates: reactions to a modified Iowa Gambling Task in humans, chimpanzees and capuchin monkeys.

Humans will, at times, act against their own economic self-interest, for example, in gambling situations. To explore the evolutionary roots of this behavior, we modified a traditional human gambling task, the Iowa Gambling Task (IGT), for use with chimpanzees, capuchin monkeys and humans. We expanded the traditional task to include two additional payoff structures to fully elucidate the ways in which these primate species respond to differing reward distributions versus overall quantities of rewards, a component often missing in the existing literature. We found that while all three species re

Efficacy of Niclosamide as a potential topical antipenetrant (TAP) against cercariae of Schistosoma mansoni in monkeys.

A 1% (W/V) formulation of Niclosamide (2', 5-Dichloro-4-nitrosalicylanilide) (TAP) was tested on Cebus apella monkeys as a topical prophylactic against schistosomiasis mansoni. Two experiments were conducted using the same formulation. In the first experiment, the TAP provided complete protection against schistosomiasis for 3 days. Of the 4 monkeys treated with TAP 7 days before exposure to Schistosoma mansoni cercariae, 2 were completely protected. The remaining 2 monkeys of the 7 day treatment group had a 78% or greater reduction in adult worm burdens when compared to the placebo treated mon

Identification of Plasmodium knowlesi erythrocyte binding proteins.

Plasmodium knowlesi, a malaria of Old World monkeys, invades all Duffy blood group positive human erythrocytes and various New World monkey erythrocytes except Cebus apella. We had previously identified a 135 kDa parasite protein in supernatants of P. knowlesi cultures that bound to Duffy positive but not to Duffy negative human erythrocytes [Haynes et al., J. Exp. Med. 167, 1873-1881 (1988)]. We now use New World monkey erythrocytes as a reagent to identify P. knowlesi proteins in culture supernatants that will bind to all New World monkey erythrocytes susceptible to invasion but not to C. ap

Neostigmine activated epileptiform discharge in the amygdala: electrographic-behavioral correlations.

This investigation was carried out to test the hypothesis that amygdaloid epileptiform activity is due to cholinergic hyperactivity. It was designed to study the underlying physiopathology of, and to act as an experimental model for, psychomotor epilepsy. Neostigmine was injected intracerebrally into the amygdala of the cebus monkey with chronically implanted "chemitrodes" fitted with EEG recording electrodes. The injections were made in the basal amygdaloid nucleus which normally shows very high acetylcholinesterase (AChE) enzymatic activity in histochemical preparations. Neostigmine injectio

Utility and limitations of serodiagnostic tests in monitoring the response to treatment of leprosy patients.

Simple measures that can facilitate early recognition of leprosy complications are still lacking. We therefore evaluated a lateral flow-based rapid diagnostic test and fast enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay measuring anti-LID-NDO antibody responses among leprosy cases in Cebu, Philippines. Responses were measured at diagnosis, then during and after the provision of standard multidrug therapy. Our data indicate that both platforms are highly sensitive tools for the primary diagnosis of, in particular, multibacillary leprosy. A gradual, quantifiable decline in both magnitude of response and perc

Dominance rank, facial morphology and testes size in male white-faced capuchins: evidence for pre- and post-mating competition.

Male reproductive success is determined by the interplay of female mate choice and male-male competition, often linked to dominance rank in social animals. Across taxa, elaborate ornaments, such as bright coloration or large antlers, often function as badges of status, signalling male competitive ability to rivals. In species where females mate with multiple males, post-mating sperm competition also plays an important role in male reproductive success and is associated with larger relative testes size. We investigate the relationship between morphological features and dominance rank in wild ma
