A case of meningitis caused by Streptococcus pyogenes in a previously healthy woman.

BACKGROUND: Streptococcus pyogenes is a well-known cause of a variety of clinical infections including local symptoms such as tonsillopharyngitis, cervical lymphadenitis, otitis media, cellulites, erysipelas, as well as more severe diseases such as scarlet fever, osteomyelitis, necrotizing fasciitis, sepsis, and toxic shock syndrome. However, acute bacterial meningitis caused by this pathogen is unusual. OBJECTIVE: We report a case of group A streptococcus (GAS) meningitis in a previously healthy woman with a dramatically rapid course and fatal outcome. CASE: A 41-year-old previously healthy

Histopathologic characterization of Morel-Lavallée lesion: Report of 6 cases and review of the literature.

Morel-Lavallée lesions (MLLs) are trauma-induced soft tissue injuries that can clinically mimic neoplasms, yet the pathologic features have only been reported for four cases. To address this, a retrospective case search was conducted at our institution from 2015 to 2022, yielding six cases. The combined ten patients presented with a mean age of 46 years (range: 13-72 years) with an equal gender distribution. Half of these cases resulted from motor vehicle accidents, while the other half were sports-related or due to mechanical falls. The median interval from injury to presentation was 6 months

Sex differences in the association of triceps skinfold thickness and colorectal cancer mortality.

OBJECTIVES: Triceps skinfold thickness (TSF) is an economical and effective anthropometric method for estimating cellulite. It has attracted increasing attention as a parameter to assess cancer prognosis. Owing to physiologic differences, the sex-specific value of TSF in the prognostic assessment of colorectal cancer (CRC) is unclear. The aim of this study was to explore the sex differences in the association of TSF and CRC mortality and provide practical clinical guidelines for optimizing prognostic strategies and nutritional guidance for patients with CRC. METHODS: Restricted cubic spline (

An Unusual Pediatric Manifestation of the Herpes Simplex Virus.

Herpetic whitlow is a viral infection of the fingers or toes caused by the herpes simplex virus. Herpes simplex virus is a common pathogen that causes infections in any cutaneous or mucocutaneous surface, most commonly gingivostomatitis or genital herpes. However, infection of the digits is also infrequently reported. Herpetic whitlow occurs when the virus infects the distal phalanx of the fingers or toes by means of direct inoculation, causing pain, swelling, erythema, and vesicle formation. The proper diagnosis is important because the condition can mimic various other podiatric abnormalitie

Severity and long-term complications of surgical site infections after orthognathic surgery: a retrospective study.

Surgical site infections (SSI) occur in 1.4% to 33.4% of cases after orthognathic surgery. This type of complication is a major concern to surgical teams, but there is no consensus for the prevention and treatment of SSI in orthognathic surgery. The purpose of this descriptive study was to evaluate the severity and the consequences of postoperative infections. The charts of all the patients operated on by the orthognathic surgery team between January 2015 and July 2017 were collected. All types of orthognathic procedures (Le Fort I maxillary osteotomy, bilateral sagittal split mandibular osteo

Primary erythromelalgia: a review.

Primary erythromelalgia (PE ORPHA90026) is a rare autosomal dominant neuropathy characterized by the combination of recurrent burning pain, warmth and redness of the extremities. The incidence rate of PE ranges from 0.36 to 1.1 per 100,000 persons. Gender ratio differs according to different studies and no evidence showed a gender preference. Clinical onset of PE is often in the first decade of life. Burning pain is the most predominant symptom and is usually caused and precipitated by warmth and physical activities. Reported cases of PE contain both inherited and sporadic forms. Genetic etiol

PCR offers no advantage over culture for microbiologic diagnosis in cellulitis.

PURPOSE: Most cases of cellulitis are traditionally attributed to β-hemolytic Streptococcus and Staphylococcus species, although in most cases, no organism is identified. Development of PCR using the conserved bacterial 16 S rRNA DNA permits identification of bacteria independent of conventional culture approaches and prior use of antibiotics. METHODS: We used PCR-based techniques to identify cellulitis etiology using aspirate samples from affected skin. Saline was infiltrated and aspirated at the site of greatest erythema or at the cellulitic border. Samples were tested for 16 S rRNA DNA, an
