Aldehyde-mediated carboxymethylcellulose/gelatin-based injectable dual network hydrogel with antimicrobial and adhesion properties for rapid hemostasis and wound repair.

Rapid hemostasis of irregular or non-compressible wounds remains a critical challenge. Existing hemostatic agents typically lack the required adhesion, antimicrobial, and rapid hemostatic properties. In this study, an injectable dual-crosslinked hemostatic hydrogel with antibacterial and adhesive properties (DCG-EDC) was designed by carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) and gelatin (Gel) as raw materials. CMC was oxidized to produce oxidized carboxymethyl cellulose (DCMC) with aldehyde groups. DCG-EDC hydrogel was constructed using DCMC and Gel via Schiff reaction and amide reaction, and this unique d

Surgicel mimicking early onset prosthetic valve endocarditis: case report.

BACKGROUND: Surgicel is one of the commercial forms of oxidized regenerated cellulose used as a bioabsorbable topical haemostatic agent during surgical procedures. However, its presence can mimic an abscess, tumour, lymph node or retained foreign body on imaging studies. The challenge in cardiac surgery is to differentiate the haemostatic material from an abscess that might be mistaken for an early onset prosthetic valve endocarditis. CASE SUMMARY: A 56-year-old woman was admitted to our department for a suspicion of early onset prosthetic valve endocarditis after an aortic valve replacement.

[Hemostatic and structural effects of the lyophilized cellulose sponge].

Hemostatic effects of oxidized cellulose (Surgicel) are well known. Based on a possible similar effect of a sponge obtained after lyophilization of biosynthetic cellulose, two different experimental studies were planned. Phase I-Pieces of cellulose sponge were inserted into small provoked cortical wounds of twelve dogs. The time elapsed to obtain bloodstill after cortical damage and application of cellulose was observed in every dog, searching to detect any possible hemostatic effect of the material. The animals were sacrificed after 7, 30 and 90 days. An average time of 1 minute was elapsed u

Candida rugosa Lipase Bioconjugation to Cellulose Nanocrystals with High Immobilization Efficiency: Comparison with Nonspecific Approach.

Nanostructured materials are promising substrates for biocatalyst immobilization. We report a green and sustainable strategy for enzyme immobilization using cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) derived from renewable sources. CNCs offer biodegradability, low toxicity, and high surface area, enabling efficient immobilization of Candida rugosa lipase (CRL). Covalent bioconjugation on TEMPO-oxidized cellulose nanocrystals (TO_CNCs) provides an almost quantitative immobilization yield without releasing toxic byproducts, but with reduced enzymatic activity per mg of immobilized protein. Conversely, nonspe

A feasible strategy for making pulp cellulose antibacterial and melt processable.

Cellulose, with its abundant sources and eco-friendly properties, stands as one of the optimal alternatives to petroleum-based polymers. However, native cellulose is difficult to process thermally and lacks intrinsic antibacterial functionality. In this study, pulp cellulose was sequentially oxidized, aminated and quaternary ammonium cationic functionalized to produce a melt processable cellulose with long-lasting antibacterial function (PC-HOD-E). PC-HOD-E exhibits an onset of melt processability at 121.1 °C and enters a viscous-flow regime at 249.7 °C. After plasticization and melt processin

The use of nasal endoscopy to control profuse epistaxis from a fracture of the basi-sphenoid in a seven-year-old child.

A seven-year-old child sustained a fracture of her basisphenoid resulting in profuse, life-threatening haemorrhage which could not be controlled with a post-nasal pack. The fracture site was identified using rigid endoscopy and packed with oxidized cellulose, resulting in immediate control of the haemorrhage. The use of the nasal endoscope in the management of posterior epistaxis is discussed.

Insight into the role of varied acid-base sites on fast pyrolysis kinetics and mechanism of cellulose.

In the present research, a series of metal oxides were employed to investigate the role of varied acid-base site on kinetics and mechanism for catalytic fast pyrolysis of cellulose using TG-MS and Py-GC/MS. The results showed that the modulation of acidity-to-basicity value via altering metal oxides constituents significantly affected the transformation pathway for cellulose pyrolysis. Higher acidity-to-basicity ratios accelerated the proceeding of deoxygenation process, wherein 39.4% aromatics and 34.7% aliphatic hydrocarbons were achieved using Al2O3 (acidity-to-basicity value of 1.38) at 75

Shape adaptive bacterial cellulose-based sponge for hemostasis applications.

Hemostasis stands as a crucial medical procedure aiming to prevent a risk of severe complications and death. Despite the availability of various commercial hemostats, i.e. oxidized regenerated cellulose (ORC) and gelatin sponge, limitations still persist. ORC-based products are highly acidic that often inhibit healing process whereas the gelatin sponge suffers from insufficient mechanical stability upon blood contacting. Hence, there is certainly need to desire a new hemostatic material that can overcome those constraints through an uncomplicated and cost-effective process. Herein, we develope

A novel dual-covering method in video-assisted thoracic surgery for pediatric primary spontaneous pneumothorax.

BACKGROUND: Primary spontaneous pneumothorax (PSP) generally occurs in young adults, whereas pediatric PSP is uncommon. It is difficult to source reliable data on pediatric PSP, the management of which is based on guidelines for adult PSP; however, the rate of recurrence after video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery (VATS) for pediatric PSP is reported to be higher. METHODS: We reviewed retrospectively a collective total of 66 surgical cases of a first pneumothorax episode in 46 children under 16 years of age, who were treated at our hospital between February, 2005 and November, 2017. RESULTS:

Mucormycosis of the nasal ala in a leukemic (M7 AML) child. Is surgery of the nasal defect indicated?

Anterior tamponade with Surgicel (oxidized cellulose) was performed on a 5-year-old girl with megakaryoblastic leukemia (M7 AML) and epistaxis. Several days later necrosis of the nasal ala occurred. Debridement was performed and mucormycosis caused by Rhizopus was found in the material. Having cured mucormycosis, a defect of the complete nasal ala remained. The question of a surgical resolution of the disfiguring nasal defect arises.

Spinal epidural fibrosis following hemostatic agent employment.

OBJECTIVE: Failed Back Surgery Syndrome (FBSS) refers to a subset of patients who have new or persistent pain after spinal surgery for back or leg pain. Epidural fibrosis (EF) is a common cause of FBSS. Many agents aiming to prevent EF have been tested. However, hemostatic agents are readily available at hospitals, easy to reach and frequently used. For these reasons, oxidized regenerated cellulose, polysaccharide hemostat, hemostatic thrombin-gelatin matrix and chitosan linear polymer were evaluated for their effects on epidural fibrosis on rats after laminectomy. METHODS: 40 Sprague-Dawley

[Application of anti-adhesive barrier for recurrent acute adhesive intestinal obstruction].

Surgical treatment of a patient with recurrent acute adhesive intestinal obstruction is described. Seven plates of anti-adhesive barrier agent made from oxidized regenerated cellulose were applied to small bowel in order to prevent adhesions. Control examination did not reveal viscero-parietal adhesions between hollow organs and delayed passage through the gastrointestinal tract. Long-term results indicate the need for intraoperative prevention of intra-abdominal adhesions in patients with abdominal adhesive disease.

Post thoracotomy spinal cord compression in a child. A word of caution.

INTRODUCTION: Oxidised regenerated cellulose is a commonly used haemostatic agent in surgery which, in rare cases, has been held responsible for severe complications. PRESENTATION OF CASE: A 6-year-old girl developed flaccid paraplegia following the excision of a large thoracic ganglioneuroblastoma. Magnetic resonance imaging revealed spinal cord compression at the T10-11 level and the patient underwent emergency decompression via the previous thoracotomy. At operation the causative factor was found to be a mass consisted of cellulose used at the original procedure to control local bleeding i

Spontaneous rupture of an intercostal artery in a patient with neurofibromatosis type 1.

A 48-year-old man with neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1) presented with a right pleural effusion. A 3D computed tomography (CT) angiogram showed an aneurysm of the right 11th intercostal artery. He had no history of chest trauma so we diagnosed a spontaneous rupture of the aneurysm causing a massive effusion. We opened his pleural cavity and found lacerated pleura and active bleeding in the posterior 11th intercostal space. After controlling the active bleeding, we treated a persistent oozing from the region of the 10th-12th vertebrae with pressure hemostasis by absorbable oxidized cellulose pack
