BACKGROUND: Debate surrounding the use of cemented femoral components in hip arthroplasty persists. A proposed risk of cement fixation is bone cement implantation syndrome (BCIS), a phenomenon characterized by intraoperative hypotension, hypoxia, and/or cardiovascular collapse. The purpose of this study was to analyze the literature to determine if enough evidence exists to support a causal relationship between cement and BCIS.
METHODS: A systematic review of articles on BCIS published from 2010 to 2023 was performed. Using the Bradford-Hill criteria, a set of nine epidemiological principles

BACKGROUND: The optimal mode of fixation for total knee arthroplasty (TKA) continues to be a subject of debate.
METHODS: There were 100 cases enrolled to compare cemented and cementless TKA using a modular trabecular metal tibia. This is a report on the 91 cases with follow-up information, including 67 cases with a minimum 10-year follow-up: 36 cases in the cemented cohort (A) and 31 cases in the cementless cohort (B). We previously reported the 2- and 5-year results for this prospective, randomized trial. Knee Society Scores and Oxford scores were collected preoperatively and postoperatively

The optimal design of cement slurry by balancing various cement additives and cement is critical for effective oil well cementation job. However, given adverse circumstances of application, existing additives may not be sufficient to perform suitably in challenging conditions, leading to premature cement hydration, formation of microcracks, and gas channeling pathways. Thus, this study explores the use of a single-step silica nanofluid (NP size: 5-10, 90-100, and 250-300 nm and concentration: 1, 3, and 5 wt %) as an additive and explores its effect on thickening time, fluid loss, and rheologic

BACKGROUND: Previous studies have demonstrated lower rates of cement extravasation when comparing balloon kyphoplasty with vertebroplasty, an effect attributed to the low-pressure injection. However, in patients with isolated endplate fractures, balloon kyphoplasty may lead to further endplate damage and increased risks of intradiscal extravasation.
METHODS: The author provides a stepwise description of a new technique called cavitational kyphoplasty that allows targeted low-pressure cement injection without the necessity of balloon inflation.
CONCLUSIONS: The new technique of cavitational k

OBJECTIVE: Balloon kyphoplasty is a minimally invasive procedure used in the treatment of vertebral compression fractures. Although cement leakage is a well-known complication of the procedure, delayed displacement of the injected bone cement material, occurring several weeks after kyphoplasty, is a rare occurrence. In this report, we describe a case of delayed dislodgement of the bone cement occurring 4 weeks after successful kyphoplasty for an osteoporotic compression fracture of L4.
CASE REPORT: A balloon kyphoplasty was successfully performed for the clinical management of an osteoporotic

BACKGROUND: Recently, the use of short tibial stems in the obese population undergoing total knee arthroplasty (TKA) has been proposed. Thus, we designed a study to assess tibial component survivorship after primary TKA using a single implant both with and without a fully cemented stem extension performed by a single surgeon.
METHODS: A search of our institutional research database was performed. A minimum 2-year follow-up was selected. Cohorts were created according to patient body mass index (BMI; >40 kg/m2 and <40 kg/m2) and the presence (stemmed tibia [ST]) or absence (non-stemmed tibia [

Bone cement infiltration can be effective at mechanically augmenting osteoporotic vertebrae. While most published literature describes the gain in mechanical strength of augmented vertebrae, we report the first measurements of viscoelastic material changes of cancellous bone due to cement infiltration. We infiltrated cancellous core specimen harvested from osteoporotic cadaveric spines with acrylic bone cement. Bone specimen before and after cement infiltration were subjected to identical quasi-static and relaxation loading in confined and free compression. Testing data were fitted to a linear

Early non-progressive horizontal radiolucent lines (RLLs) (<2 mm) under the tibial component following cemented total knee replacement (TKR) are considered to result from poor cement injection into cancellous bone. These RLLs may facilitate the entry of joint fluid and wear debris into the interface, which may proceed to ballooning osteolysis. There is currently no consensus on the preferred cementing technique (single- versus two-stage cementation) in TKR. We have prospectively analysed postoperative radiographs in 50 consecutive TKRs to compare the RLLs following single- (25 TKRs) and two-st

Study DesignMulticenter retrospective cohort study.ObjectivesCement-augmented pedicle screws (CAPS) enhance fixation in osteoporotic patients, but carry a risk of cement leakage (CL), potentially leading to pulmonary embolism and neurological deficits. This study aimed to investigate the incidence and classification of CL and identify risk factor.MethodsWe included 140 patients undergoing thoracic or lumbar spinal fusion with CAPS at 7 institutions. CL was assessed by postoperative CT and classified as type S (segmental vein), type B (basivertebral vein), or type I (malpositioned screws). Mult

Background/Objectives: Cement-augmented fenestrated pedicle screws (CAFPSs) are widely used to enhance fixation strength in osteoporotic vertebrae; however, cement leakage remains a major concern because it can lead to severe complications. This study aimed to clarify the frequency, patterns, and risk factors of cement leakage using postoperative computed tomography (CT). Methods: A total of 302 screws placed in 79 osteoporotic patients who underwent spinal fixation with CAFPSs between March 2022 and December 2024 were retrospectively analyzed. Cement leakage was evaluated using postoperative

BACKGROUND: With the increasing incidence of hip fractures in older adults, hip replacement with a cemented femoral stem has become a viable treatment option. However, concerns regarding potential complications, particularly bone cement implantation syndrome (BCIS), especially in patients with preexisting medical conditions, have prompted orthopedic surgeons to explore alternative approaches.
OBJECTIVE: The research question of this retrospective study is whether BCIS incidence in patients with preexisting heart disease undergoing cemented bipolar hemiarthroplasty is higher than that of patie

Fast-hardening cement can be used to quickly repair concrete constructions. Characterizing mechanical properties by electrical properties is a promising method to evaluate the mechanical performance nondestructively. However, little attention has been paid to this area. In this paper, copper-coated fine-steel-fibers-reinforced reactive powder concrete (RPC) with compound cement was manufactured. The mass ratio of sulphoaluminate and ordinary Portland cement in the compound cement was 1:1. The influence of copper-coated fine steel fibers with the volume increasing from 0 to 3.0% by the total vo

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: Bone cement implantation syndrome (BCIS) typically occurs during bone cementation and prosthesis insertion. Almost all of the models used to explain BCIS are based on studies related to hip arthroplasty. BCIS induced by bone cement implantation in superficial wounds has not been reported.
CASE PRESENTATION: We report the case of a 37-year-old man with chronic osteomyelitis of the left tibia (Cierny - Mader type II), who developed BCIS after covering the infected bone surface with antibiotic-loaded bone cement. BCIS presented as acute massive pulmonary exudation an
