A synergistic herbal formulation targeting Malassezia furfur and Staphylococcus epidermidis for effective dandruff management.

Dandruff is a chronic scalp condition and the mildest form of seborrheic dermatitis, associated with microbial dysbiosis primarily involving Malassezia furfur and Staphylococcus epidermidis. Conventional anti-dandruff treatments are often limited by recurrence and reliance on synthetic antifungal agents. This study aimed to develop and evaluate a synergistic, oil-based herbal formulation with antimicrobial activity against dandruff-causing microorganisms. The herbal constituent, Eucalyptus citriodora (EC) oil, individually signifies its efficacy against key dandruff-causing microbes, while Cen

Perspectives on the Molecular Mediators of Oxidative Stress and Antioxidant Strategies in the Context of Neuroprotection and Neurolongevity: An Extensive Review.

Molecules with at least one unpaired electron in their outermost shell are known as free radicals. Free radical molecules are produced either within our bodies or by external sources such as ozone, cigarette smoking, X-rays, industrial chemicals, and air pollution. Disruption of normal cellular homeostasis by redox signaling may result in cardiovascular, neurodegenerative diseases and cancer. Although ROS (reactive oxygen species) are formed in the GI tract, little is known about how they contribute to pathophysiology and disease etiology. When reactive oxygen species and antioxidants are in i

Supplementation with asiatic acid during in vitro maturation improves porcine oocyte developmental competence by regulating oxidative stress.

Asiatic acid is a natural triterpene found in Centella asiatica that acts as an effective free radical scavenger. Our previous research showed that asiatic acid delayed porcine oocyte ageing in vitro and improved preimplantation embryo development competence in vitro; however, the protective effects of asiatic acid against oxidative stress in porcine oocyte maturation are still unclear. Here, we investigated the effects of asiatic acid on porcine oocyte in vitro maturation (IVM) and subsequent embryonic development competence after parthenogenetic activation (PA) and in vitro fertilization (IV

Asiatic acid protects against cisplatin-induced acute kidney injury via anti-apoptosis and anti-inflammation.

Cisplatin is a well-known chemotherapeutic drug applied for the treatment of numerous human cancers. However, the use of cisplatin in clinic is limited by certain serious side effects, such as nephrotoxicity. Unfortunately, there is currently no effective therapeutic approach to prevent cisplatin-induced AKI. Increasing evidence suggests that apoptosis of tubular epithelial cells and renal inflammation mainly determine the progression and outcome of cisplatin-induced AKI. Asiatic acid (AA) has been reported have the functions of anti-inflammation and anti-apoptosis, etc. But the effects of AA

ACNO hydrogel enhances diabetic wound healing by modulating the Bcl-2/Bax/Caspase-3/PARP pathway.

Centella asiatica (L.) Urban, one of the authentic medicinal materials from Guizhou Province in China, has been traditionally applied for the treatment of contusions and fractures, as well as for promoting wound healing. Preliminary research suggests that asiaticoside-nitric oxide hydrogel (ACNO) exhibits the potential to enhance the healing of diabetic wounds (DWs); however, the underlying molecular mechanisms require further elucidation. Here, we aim to identify ACNO's anti-apoptotic targets and its mode of action in DWs treatment. ACNO was applied topically on db/db and db/m mice with DWs.

Computer-aided discovery of dual-target compounds for Alzheimer's from ayurvedic medicinal plants.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a neurodegenerative disorder characterized by cognitive decline, driven by the accumulation of amyloid-beta plaques and neurofibrillary tangles. It involves the dysfunction of key enzymes such as Acetylcholinesterase (AChE) and β-secretase (BACE1), making them critical targets for therapeutic intervention. In this study we investigated an in-house library of 820 secondary metabolites obtained from Ayurvedic plants against AChE and BACE1 with the aim to discover novel leads for AD. Virtual screening resulted in 15 ligands, mostly belonging to the ursane-type or damma

MAD ointment ameliorates Imiquimod-induced psoriasiform dermatitis by inhibiting the IL-23/IL-17 axis in mice.

Psoriasis is a chronic auto-immune inflammation disease with skin lesions and abnormal keratinocyte proliferation. The IL-23/IL-17 axis plays an important role in the pathogenesis of psoriasis. Madecassoside (MAD) was the most important constituents isolated from Centella asiatica, which has long been used in dermatology, and it is supposed that MAD may have effects on psoriasis. In the present study, the BALB/c mice ear and back skin received IMQ for 6 consecutive days to induce psoriasis-like dermatitis. MAD ointment was applied 6h later after IMQ treatment, and the IL-23/IL-17 pathway was i

Effect of infusing ghee with Ayurvedic herb mix (Murchana) on its oxidative stability and its comparative analysis with medicated ghee (Siddha Ghrita).

BACKGROUND: The preparation of medicated ghee, known as siddha ghrita in Ayurveda, faces significant challenges due to lipid susceptibility to oxidation, which reduces shelf life and potentially leads to the loss of bioactive compounds. A popular lipid-stabilization process, murchana, has been recommended in Ayurveda as a pre-treatment for ghee with an Ayurvedic herb mix, which may improve its stability. OBJECTIVE: This study investigates the effect of murchana process on the oxidative stability of Centella asiatica (CA) ghee. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Plain ghee (PG), murchit ghee (MG), CA wit

Effectiveness of Vegetated Drainage Ditches for Domestic Sewage Effluent Mitigation.

Plant species have an important role in eco-ditches; however, the Michaelis-Menten kinetic parameters of nutrient uptake, growth rate and purification efficiency of ditch plants and their influences on domestic sewage treatment efficiency are still unclear. Growth rates of all nine species, but especially Lemna gibba, Cladophora and Myriophyllum verticillatum were best in undiluted domestic sewage as opposed to a mixture of domestic sewage. Performance of species to accumulate nutrients was not only species-specific, but was also affected by both sewage treatments. Removal efficiency of nutrie

A comprehensive review on the hepatotoxicity of herbs used in the Indian (Ayush) systems of alternative medicine.

Complementary and alternative medicine-related liver injuries are increasing globally. Alternative medicine, as an inclusive healthcare practice, is widely accepted in developing and underdeveloped countries. In this context, the traditional systems of medicine in India have been at the forefront, catering to the preventive and therapeutic spectrum in the absence of conclusive evidence for benefits and lack of data on safety. Contrary to popular belief, it is evident that apart from adverse events caused by contamination and adulteration of alternative medicines, certain commonly used herbal c
