Up to 10 years clinical performance of zirconia ceramic and metal-ceramic fixed partial dentures: A retrospective study.

STATEMENT OF PROBLEM: Completely veneered zirconia ceramic (ZC) fixed partial dentures (FPDs) have been reported to have a higher incidence of ceramic chipping than the standard metal-ceramic FPDs. However, data from comparative long-term studies are sparse. PURPOSE: The purpose of this retrospective study was to compare the long-term survival, chipping-free survival, and success of ceramic-veneered high noble metal alloy (HN), base metal alloy (cobalt-chromium alloy) (CC), and ZC FPDs and to isolate risk factors for the incidence of failure, veneer chipping, and overall complications. Comparison of Wear Rate between Ceramic-on-Ceramic, Metal on Highly Cross-linked Polyethylene, and Metal-on-Metal Bearings.

Objective  Currently, there is a lack of evidence on the medium-term follow-up of cementless total hip arthroplasty (THA) using metal on highly cross-linked polyethylene (MoP), ceramic-on-ceramic (CoC), and metal-on-metal (MoM) bearings. Our aim was to calculate the 5- to 10-year wear rate and the incidence rate of osteolysis for 3 types of bearings. Methods  A total of 77 patients underwent MoP, 105 underwent ceramic CoC, and 55 underwent MoM THAs. The average patient age at the time of surgery was 64.7, 55.9, and 59.9 years old in the MoP, CoC, and MoM bearings, respectively. Clinical and ra

Rare Pseudotumor in Ceramic-On-Ceramic Total Hip Replacement with Concomitant Fungal Periprosthetic Joint Infection: A Case Report.

BACKGROUND Total hip replacement (THR) is a commonly performed treatment for severe osteoarthritis. In this report, we present the case of a woman who unfortunately suffered 2 severe but rare complications of THRs: a pseudotumor formation on a Delta ceramic-on-ceramic bearing and a fungal periprosthetic joint infection (PJI). CASE REPORT In early 2016, a 63-year-old woman underwent an elective left total hip replacement with ceramic-on-ceramic bearing due to severe osteoarthritis. In 2021, she suffered 2 unprovoked DVTs. Therefore, ultrasound (US) Doppler imaging of the left lower limb was per

High Risk of Neck-liner Impingement and Notching Observed with Thick Femoral Neck Implants in Ceramic-on-ceramic THA.

BACKGROUND: Recently, impingement between the femoral stem and ceramic liner, which appears as a notch in the stem neck on radiographs, has emerged as a new complication. However, the proportion of impingement, potential risk factors, and related complications are poorly elucidated. QUESTION/PURPOSES: In patients who underwent ceramic-on-ceramic (CoC) THA and had at least 10 years of follow-up, we asked: (1) What proportion had radiographic evidence of stem neck-ceramic liner impingement (notching of the stem), and what implant design, implantation factors, or complications such as ceramic fr

Comparative effectiveness of ceramic-on-ceramic implants in stemmed hip replacement: a multinational study of six national and regional registries.

BACKGROUND: The rapid decline in use of conventional total hip replacement with a large femoral head size and a metal-on-metal bearing surface might lead to increased popularity of ceramic-on-ceramic bearings as another hard-on-hard alternative that allows implantation of a larger head. We sought to address comparative effectiveness of ceramic-on-ceramic and metal-on-HXLPE (highly cross-linked polyethylene) implants by utilizing the distributed health data network of the ICOR (International Consortium of Orthopaedic Registries), an unprecedented collaboration of national and regional registrie

Ceramic-on-ceramic total hip arthroplasty: incidence and risk factors of bearing surface-related noises in 125 patients.

The ceramic-on-ceramic bearing surface has high wear resistance and good biocompatibility in total hip arthroplasty (THA). However, the postoperative noise problem has been an important issue. The purpose of this retrospective study was to determine the incidence and risk factors of bearing surface-related noises in patients with third-generation ceramic-on-ceramic THAs. One hundred twenty-five patients (143 hips) with ceramic-on-ceramic THAs were included in the study and followed to obtain noise and functional results. Patient factors, including sex, age, height, weight, body mass index, dia

Early to mid-term results of ceramic-on-ceramic total hip replacement: analysis of bearing-surface-related complications.

Ceramic-on-ceramic bearings in hip replacement have low rates of wear and are increasingly being used in young adults. Our aim was to determine the incidence of audible phenomena or other bearing-related complications. We retrospectively analysed 250 ceramic-on-ceramic hip replacements in 224 patients which had been implanted between April 2000 and December 2007. The mean age of the patients at operation was 44 years (14 to 83) and all the operations were performed using the same surgical technique at a single centre. At a mean follow-up of 59 months (24 to 94), the mean Oxford hip score was 4

Delta ceramic-on-alumina ceramic articulation in primary THA: prospective, randomized FDA-IDE study and retrieval analysis.

UNLABELLED: Wear and osteolysis continue to be major reasons for revision surgery in THA. Ceramic-on-ceramic bearings eliminate polyethylene wear debris. The newest generation of these bearings incorporate nanosized, yttria-stabilized tetragonal zirconia particles producing an alumina matrix composite. We asked whether this new material would perform as well as a conventional bearing in terms of functional hip scores, radiographic migration and osteolysis, complications and survival. As part of a US FDA investigational device exemption study (G000075), we conducted an initial prospective safet

Laser-Induced Thermal Decomposition of Uranium Single-Source Precursors to Form Uranium Ceramics.

Three molecular precursors (uranium amidinate, thioamidate, and amidate) were subjected to laser-based heating to assess how laser irradiation (T > 2000 °C and rapid cooling) changes uranium material formation compared to more mild conditions in furnace heating. Simultaneous thermal analysis was conducted to study mass loss and decomposition profile of the precursors under mild conditions, and suggests formation of uranium nitride, sulfide, and oxide materials. Under laser irradiation, residual gas analysis indicates more fragmentation of ligands with increasing laser power, with small gases s

Achieving strength and toughness limits of anisotropic microstructured alumina ceramics through interface engineering.

Advanced ceramic composites face a critical challenge: achieving the combined strength and toughness as in natural materials like nacre. Bioinspired anisotropic microstructured ceramics (AMCs) address this by mimicking nacre's hierarchical architecture. However, the critical role of the ceramic-matrix interface is often overlooked, due to a fundamental conflict: the weak interfaces needed for toughening through crack deflection are naturally difficult to achieve with conventional sintering processes that prioritize densification. Here, we bridge this gap by establishing universal energy- and s

Porous hydroxyapatite - β-tricalcium phosphate ceramics produced from a rapid sol-gel process.

Hydroxyapatite (HAp, Ca10(PO4)6(OH)2) is the major inorganic component of bones, with high bioactivity and biocompatibility, and pores in the 50-200 μm range can facilitate cell anchorage and proliferation. HAp was synthesised through a rapid sol-gel method, avoiding the usual long aging process typically required for sol-gel HAp. Acetate and nitrate precursor salts were compared, to produce bioceramics having different porosities induced via the addition of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) pore-forming agent. 3-10 wt% H2O2 was added, and the resulting bioceramics calcined at 400 and 700 °C. Microstru

Microstructure and Bioactivity of Ca- and Mg-Modified Silicon Oxycarbide-Based Amorphous Ceramics.

Silicon oxycarbide (SiOC), Ca- and Mg-modified silicon oxycarbide (SiCaOC and SiMgOC) were synthesized via sol-gel processing with subsequent pyrolysis in an inert gas atmosphere. The physicochemical structures of the materials were characterized by XRD, SEM, FTIR, and 29Si MAS NMR. Biocompatibility and in vitro bioactivity were detected by MTT, cell adhesion assay, and simulated body fluid (SBF) immersion test. Mg and Ca were successfully doped into the network structure of SiOC, and the non-bridging oxygens (NBO) were formed. The hydroxycarbonate apatite (HCA) was formed on the modified SiOC
