Redescription of Proteocephalus fallax La Rue, 1911 (Cestoda) and a list of proteocephalid tapeworms of whitefish (Coregonus spp.).

Tapeworms of the genus Proteocephalus Weinland, 1858 (Cestoda: Proteocephalidae) are common and widespread intestinal parasites of whitefish (Coregonus spp., Salmonidae: Coregoninae). Previous taxonomic studies, based solely on morphology and inconsistently fixed specimens, concluded that all salmoniform fish, including whitefish, are parasitised by a single euryxenous and highly polymorphic species, Proteocephalus longicollis (Zeder, 1800). However, recent molecular phylogenetic analyses have revealed the existence of several species specific to individual genera or even species of salmonifor

Activity of proteolytic enzymes in the intestine of bream Abramis brama infected with cestodes Caryophyllaeus laticeps (Cestoda, Caryophyllidea).

Adaptive mechanisms underlying the long-term existence of intestinal parasites in their enzymatically hostile environment are still poorly understood, particularly with regard to fish cestodes. The study describes the activity distribution of proteolytic enzymes along the gut of the bream Abramis brama infected with intestinal cestodes Caryophyllaeus laticeps and characterizes the capacity of these worms to inhibit host proteinase activity. Mucosal proteolytic activity was mainly presented by serine proteinases. The research revealed an insignificant increase in total proteolytic activity from

Proteocephalid tapeworms (Cestoda: Onchoproteocephalidea) of loaches (Cobitoidea): Evidence for monophyly and high endemism of parasites in the Far East.

The parasite fauna of loaches (Cypriniformes: Cobitoidea), a group of small bottom-dwelling freshwater fishes with a mostly Eurasian distribution, remains a largely unknown quantity. Here we revise the taxonomy of tapeworms of the genus Proteocephalus Weinland, 1858 (Cestoda: Proteocephalidae) that had been found in loaches from the Palaearctic Region (Central Europe, Japan and Russia [Primorsky Region]). Molecular phylogenetic analysis based on two nuclear (ssr- and lsrDNA) and two mitochondrial genes (cox1 and rrnL) revealed a monophyletic group consisting of four valid species nesting withi

Establishment of the complete life cycle of Spirometra (Cestoda: Diphyllobothriidae) in the laboratory using a newly isolated triploid clone.

Methods to maintain the life cycle of pathogenic organisms become powerful tools for studying molecular and cellular bases of infectious diseases. Spirometra erinaceieuropaei is a parasitic tapeworm that causes sparganosis in humans. Because S. erinaceieuropaei has a complex life cycle with different stages and host species requirements, there have been no reports to establish the complete life cycle in the laboratory. In this study, using Cyclops as the first intermediate host, mouse as the experimental second intermediate host, and dog as the final host, we succeeded in maintaining S. erinac

Diphyllobothrium dendriticum (Cestoda: Diphyllobothriidae) in the Intestinal Tract of the Herring Gull Larus argentatus: Localization and Trophic Parameters.

We studied the activities both of digestive enzymes in the small intestine of the herring gull (Larus argentatus) and a tapeworm Diphyllobothrium dendriticum (Cestoda: Diphyllobothriidae) residing in the intestine. It was found that D. dendriticum infects the medial section of the small intestine of the herring gull. Such localization of D. dendriticum is caused by the maximal activity of proteases and glycosidases and by the high rate of membrane and cavitary digestion in this section. The activity of protease and glycosidase in gulls infected with D. dendriticum is decreased. The activity of

Mathevolepis alpina sp. n. (Cestoda: Hymenolepididae) from an alpine shrew: the first record of the genus in Europe.

Mathevolepis alpina sp. n. is described from an alpine shrew, Sorex alpinus, from the Carpathian Region of the Slovak Republic. The new species differs from other species of the genus by the morphology of the male copulatory apparatus, especially the cirrus, which is characterised by asymmetrical parabasal swelling. The new species represents the first record of cestodes of the genus Mathevolepis Spassky, 1948 in Europe, i.e. the western part of the Palaearctic Region. The geographical distribution of species of Mathevolepis is reviewed.

Dynamics of egg production of the cestode Diphyllobothrium dendriticum (Nitzsch, 1824) (Cestoda: Pseudophyllidea) and the concept of fecundity in helminths.

The dynamics of egg production of the tapeworm D. dendriticum has been estimated experimentally in nestlings of the herring gull Larus argentatus per day and per reproductive period. Numbers of eggs in strobilae have been estimated for the maturation period. Mean egg production, of one tapeworm per day (10.42 +/- 2.72 mln) is two orders of magnitude as high as the maximal number of eggs in a mature strobila (0.206 +/- 0.007). It is proposed to estimate the coefficient of reproduction intensity as the ratio of egg output per unit of time and maximum egg numbers in a mature strobila.

Molecular characterization of Moniezia expansa (Rudolphi, 1810) (Cestoda: Anoplocephalidae) from a captive common eland (Tragelaphus oryx) in Taiwan.

The genus Moniezia comprises globally distributed parasitic cestodes that cause significant economic losses in domestic ruminants, yet its molecular characterization in wildlife remains limited. This study provides the first molecular confirmation of M. expansa in zoo animals in Taiwan. Specimens were obtained from a captive-born common eland (Tragelaphus oryx) and a domestic goat (Capra hircus); those from the eland underwent morphological examination of gravid proglottids, while all samples were analyzed genetically. Using the 18S ribosomal RNA, 28S ribosomal RNA, cytochrome c oxidase subuni

Two new marine species of Rhinebothrium (Cestoda: Rhinebothriidea) from stingrays from the Persian Gulf and Gulf of Oman.

The genus Rhinebothrium (Cestoda: Rhinebothriidea) comprises tapeworm species parasitizing elasmobranch hosts, particularly batoids. Despite numerous recent findings regarding the ecological importance of marine fish parasites throughout the world, the biodiversity of cestodes inhabiting fishes of the Persian Gulf and the Gulf of Oman remains understudied. Here, two new species of Rhinebothrium from stingrays from the Persian Gulf and Gulf of Oman are described: Rhinebothrium gossi sp. nov. and Rhinebothrium palmeri sp. nov. from Maculabatis arabica and Maculabatis randalli, respectively. A new species of Versteria (Cestoda: Taeniidae) parasitizing Neogale vison and Lontra canadensis (Carnivora: Mustelidae) from Western Canada.

Via molecular and morphological analyses, we describe adult specimens of a new species of Versteria (Cestoda: Taeniidae) infecting mink and river otter (Carnivora: Mustelidae) in Western Canada, as well as larval forms from muskrat and mink. These sequences closely matched those reported from adult specimens from Colorado and Oregon, as well as larval infections in humans and a captive orangutan. We describe here a new species from British Columbia and Alberta (Canada), Versteria rafei n. sp., based upon morphological diagnostic characteristics and genetic distance and phylogeny. Two new species of Scyphophyllidium (Cestoda: Phyllobothriidea) from Chaenogaleus macrostoma (Bleeker) (Elasmobranchii: Carcharhiniformes) from the Persian Gulf, Iran.

Two new species of Scyphophyllidium Woodland, 1927 are described from the Hooktooth shark, Chaenogaleus macrostoma (Bleeker), from the Persian Gulf, Iran. Scyphophyllidium hormuziense n. sp. is assigned to morphological category 2 of its genus because it possesses bothridial marginal loculi and an apical sucker on each flat bothridium, and lacks bothridial facial loculi. Within category 2, it is distinguished from its congeners, except for S. janineae (Ruhnke, Healy and Shapero, 2006), by possessing, rather than lacking, a prominent cephalic peduncle. It differs from S. janineae in the distrib

First molecular characterisation of Hydatigera taeniaeformis (Cestoda: Taeniidae) from Rattus rattus in urban market centres from Tamale, Ghana.

BACKGROUND: The common cat tapeworm, Hydatigera taeniaeformis, is widely distributed across many regions of the world but its global genetic diversity, ecology, and other biological features are not fully understood. The predator-prey relationship of felids and rodents sustains the transmission in both sylvatic and synanthropic or urban settings. This study was carried out in three urban market centres in Tamale, Ghana to determine the prevalence of H. taeniaeformis infection in urban rats and characterise the local population genetics using the mitochondrial nad1 gene sequences. METHODS: Fro

Diphyllobothrium sprakeri n. sp. (Cestoda: Diphyllobothriidae): a hidden broad tapeworm from sea lions off North and South America.

BACKGROUND: The systematic of several marine diphyllobothriid tapeworms of pinnipeds has been revised in recent years. However, 20 species of Diphyllobothrium from phocids and otariids are still recognized as incertae sedis. We describe a new species of Diphyllobothrium from the intestine of California sea lions Zalophus californianus (Lesson) (type-host) and South American sea lions Otaria flavescens (Shaw). METHODS: Zalophus californianus from the Pacific coast of the USA and O. flavescens from Peru and Argentina were screened for parasites. Partial fragments of the large ribosomal subunit

A new species of Atriotaenia (Cestoda: Anoplocephalidae) from the hog-nosed skunk Conepatus chinga (Carnivora: Mephitidae) in Peru.

Atriotaenia sanmarci n. sp. (Cestoda: Anoplocephalidae) is described as a parasite of the Andean hog-nosed skunk, Conepatus chinga (Carnivora: Mephitidae), from Cusco, Perú. The new species is primarily distinguished from related species by the distribution, and greater number, of testes, i.e., 194-223 versus 40-60 in Atriotaenia sandgroundi (Sandground, 1926) Baer, 1935, 47-73 in Atriotaenia procyonis (Chandler, 1942) Spasskii, 1951, and 21-84 in Atriotaenia incisa Railliet, 1899. Also, there are differences with respect to the larger dimensions of suckers (300-371 µm vs. 140 in A. sandground

Identity of Diphyllobothrium spp. (Cestoda: Diphyllobothriidae) from sea lions and people along the Pacific coast of South America.

Host specificity evidently is not expressed by various species of Diphyllobothrium that occur typically in marine mammals, and people become infected occasionally when dietary customs favor ingestion of plerocercoids. This report mainly concerns 2 species, Diphyllobothrium pacificum and Diphyllobothrium arctocephalinum, for which sea lions (Otariidae) are final hosts. The taxonomic status of those cestodes has not been clearly discernible because of misinterpretation of relationships; complex synonymies have resulted from misidentification(s). The Lecanicephalidea represents one of 11 currently recognized elasmobranch-hosted tapeworm lineages. It is quite speciose, with nearly 100 validly recognized species to date. Yet spermatozoon features have been fully characterized for only a single species; spermatozoon characters for a second species were previously included in a data matrix used to infer phylogenetic relationships among cestode orders, but data are limited and no images were provided. Specimens of Tetragonocephalum sp. were collected from the whipray, Urogymnus asperrimus 1, from the Solomon Sea off the Solomon Islands. The

Molecular phylogenetic identification and morphological characteristics of Raillietina echinobothrida (Cestoda: Cyclophyllidea: Davaineidae) in commercial chickens in North China.

Raillietina echinobothrida (R. echinobothrida) is one of the most pathogenic and prevalent tapeworms threat to the commercial chickens in China. However, there is a lack of research on their molecular identification and morphological characteristics. This study explored the molecular identification markers for R. echinobothrida in North China based on 18s ribosomal RNA (18s rRNA) gene and the ribosomal DNA second internal transcribed spacer (ITS-2) gene. The BLAST results of 18s rRNA (1643 bp) and ITS-2 (564 bp) gene sequences showed that the isolated intestinal tapeworms were R. echinobothrid
