Editorial: National Trends in Child Mental Health Disorders Signal Opportunities and Challenges for Precision Child Psychiatry.

Improving access to child mental health care is a national priority area. The US Department of Health and Human Services, through the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), recently awarded $68.5 million in grants that support behavioral health education, training and community programs to help address mental health and substance use conditions.1 One of the 4 guiding principles of SAMHSA's 2023-2026 Strategic Plan is a commitment to data and evidence to inform resource allocation, with priority on timely, high-quality data.2 The Behavioral Health Services Informati

Maternal adverse childhood experiences, child resilience factors, and child mental health problems: A multi-wave study.

BACKGROUND: Research suggests that maternal ACEs have intergenerational consequences for offspring mental health. However, very few studies have investigated moderators of this association. OBJECTIVES: The objective of this longitudinal study was to examine whether child resilience factors moderated the association between maternal ACEs prior to age 18, and child-reported symptoms of anxiety, depression, hyperactivity, and inattention. PARTICIPANTS AND SETTING: The current study used data from 910 mother-child dyads. Participants were recruited in pregnancy from 2008 to 2010 as part of a lon

Health professionals' responses to disclosure of child sexual abuse history: female child sexual abuse survivors' experiences.

This study reports on a postal questionnaire, conducted in 2004, with female survivors of historic child sexual abuse. The questionnaire explored their experiences of health professionals' responsiveness to disclosure of child sexual abuse history. Of 61 participants, aged between 22 and 65, 69% had disclosed to health professionals. Those who had not disclosed reported that they would have liked to but were not asked about child sexual abuse. Thirty-five percent of participants suggested routine questioning about child sexual abuse. Most participants related a fear of common medical examinati

Parents' Spontaneous Attributions about their Problem Child: Associations with Parental Mental Health and Child Conduct Problems.

Parents' attributions about their child's personality and behaviour are known to predict the quality of parent-child interactions and outcomes for the child, including those from parenting interventions. Nothing is known, however, about the quantity and quality of attributions parents use during free speech about their children referred for treatment of behavioural and emotional problems. We tested hypotheses about the types of attributions and associations among parental attributions, parental psychopathology and child conduct problems, using 504 five-minute speech samples (FMSS) coded using

Mental Health and Behavioral Outcomes of Sexual and Nonsexual Child Maltreatment Among Child Welfare-Involved Youth.

Our research team used the nationally representative National Survey of Child and Adolescent Well-Being II to explore the differences in mental health and behavioral outcomes between children who enter the child welfare system with substantiated sexual abuse and those who enter with exclusively nonsexual maltreatment. The sample included 380 children between the ages of 8 to 17.5 who were substantiated for maltreatment (sexual and nonsexual) and had the same caregivers at both wave 1 and 2 (n = 380). Results show that the average age of children in the sample was 11 years old, and the results

Regulatory disorders in early childhood: Correlates in child behavior, parent-child relationship, and parental mental health.

According to the guidelines published by the German Society of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, Psychosomatics and Psychotherapy (2007), regulatory disorders of early childhood are characterized by a symptom triad, including (a) behavioral symptoms such as excessive crying, sleeping, or feeding problems; (b) a disturbed parent-child relationship; and (c) parental psychopathology. On the basis of a clinic-referred sample of 162 children, we examined whether children with and without regulatory symptoms differed in the quality of parent-child relationship and parental mental health, and how ofte

[THE MOTHER AND CHILD HEALTH CARE IN THE USSR IN 1936-1941].

In the USSR, in conditions of "demographic swings" of 1930s, deterioration of living standards of population, urbanization and other causes, mother and child health care especially mattered. The article considers mother and child health care in the USSR in 1936-1941 as part of demographic policy measures targeting the improvement of qualitative and quantitative demographic indicators. The period from validity of the Resolution of the Central Executive Committee of the USSR and the Council of Peoples Commissars of the USSR of June 27, 1936, to the beginning of the Great Patriotic War is analyze

The Lancet Child & Adolescent Health Commission on the future of neonatology.

Neonatal mortality remains unacceptably high throughout the world. Survival of sick infants in their first month of life has improved over the past six decades. However, many comorbidities persist, with lifelong implications for health. The current ecosystem for research and development of drugs and medical devices to treat neonatal disorders is hindering further improvements to neonatal outcomes, especially infants born preterm or needing critical care. Innovation is lagging, and this is a public health problem characterised by multifactorial challenges in leadership, collaboration, regulatio

Debate: Conduct disorder and the segregation of child mental health.

Should conduct disorder (CD) be classified as a psychiatric diagnosis? The model of CD found in current diagnostic systems is not without its flaws. The criteria for CD have often been criticised for lacking developmental sensitivity with regard to young children, and questions concerning the subtyping of the disorder and its overlap with comorbid conditions remain contentious. Compelling evidence nonetheless supports the view that this 'behaviour disorder' represents a complex mental health issue that belongs in these diagnostic systems. Most importantly, it identifies a group of children and

Global Perspectives on the Health and Social Impacts of Child Trafficking.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Survivors of child sex trafficking (CST) experience many health and social sequelae as a result of stigma, discrimination, and barriers to health care. Our objective was to obtain a cross-cultural understanding of these barriers and to explore the relationship between stigmatization and health outcomes through application of the Health Stigma and Discrimination Framework (HSDF). METHODS: In-depth, semistructured interviews were conducted with 45 recognized CST expert service providers. Interview data were analyzed using established content analysis procedures and ap

The roles of sex and gender in child and adolescent mental health.

Neurodevelopmental and mental health disorders are common in children and young people, and frequently continue to be impairing into adulthood. Biological sex and gender identity are important factors in the likelihood of the development, referral and diagnosis of these disorders, as well as sources of clinical heterogeneity. In this editorial, we highlight that the aetiology of neurodevelopmental and mental health disorders in young people is complex and multi-faceted. Emerging evidence has implicated sex and gender as playing an important role in understanding the onset and course of psychop

The health consequences of child marriage: a systematic review of the evidence.

BACKGROUND: Child marriage, defined as marriage before 18 years of age, is a violation of human rights and a marker of gender inequality. Growing attention to this issue on the global development agenda also reflects concerns that it may negatively impact health. We conducted a systematic review to synthesize existing research on the consequences of child marriage on health and to assess the risk of bias in this body of literature. METHODS AND FINDINGS: We searched databases focused on biomedicine and global health for studies that estimated the effect of marrying before the age of 18 on any

Right to child health in context of natural environmental security.

OBJECTIVE: Introduction: From different points of view, health in general and child health, in particular, constitute the highest value which preserves a significant amount of resource potential. Child health is understood as his/her state consisting of a certain system of elements (physical, psychological, etc.) each of which, on the one hand, is characterized by its specificity, and on the other hand, is in a complementary relationship with each other. A process of child health formation is influenced by a large number of various elements (social, economic, etc.) and the natural environment

Effects of prenatal care on child health at age 5.

The broad goal of contemporary prenatal care is to promote the health of the mother, child, and family through the pregnancy, delivery, and the child's development. Although the vast majority of mothers giving birth in developed countries receive prenatal care, past research has not found compelling evidence that early or adequate prenatal care has favorable effects on birth outcomes. It is possible that prenatal care confers health benefits to the child that do not become apparent until after the perinatal period. Using data from a national urban birth cohort study in the US, we estimate the
