Using Hierarchical Linear Modeling to Examine How Individual SLPs Differentially Contribute to Children's Language and Literacy Gains in Public Schools.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was twofold: (a) to determine the unique contributions in children's language and literacy gains, over 1 academic year, that are attributable to the individual speech-language pathologist (SLP) and (b) to explore possible child- and SLP-level factors that may further explain SLPs' contributions to children's language and literacy gains. METHOD: Participants were 288 kindergarten and 1st-grade children with language impairment who were currently receiving school-based language intervention from SLPs. Using hierarchical linear modeling, we partitioned the vari

Auditory and oral language abilities in children with cochlear implants: a case study.

The cochlear implant (CI) represents the most important advance in the treatment of individuals with severe to profound bilateral hearing loss who do not benefit from hearing aids. Children who receive the CI during the critical period of neuroplasticity of the auditory system, when combined with speech therapy, have the chance to develop the auditory and linguistic skills similarly to their normal hearing peers. Two cases of implanted children are presented in this study, and one of them was not enrolled in a formal aurioral therapeutic program since the implantation surgery. At the moment of

What can language creation tell us about language evolution?

How did the languages we use today come about? One way to make this problem more tractable is to think about language, not as a single entity but as a compilation of properties. Biological evolution may have resulted in the creation of some properties of language. However, cultural evolution, which relies on changes introduced by successive generations of users and is quicker than biological evolution, may also be responsible for the introduction of properties into language. Although it is difficult to distinguish linguistic properties introduced through biological evolution from those introdu

Speech, Sign, or Both? Factors Influencing Caregivers' Communication Method Decision Making for Deaf/Hard of Hearing Children.

PURPOSE: Caregivers of deaf/hard of hearing infants are faced with challenging decisions regarding their child's communication method. The purpose of the current research note is to characterize the advice that caregivers receive and value as well as the factors that influence caregivers' decision making. METHOD: The current study enrolled 105 caregiver-child dyads, including children between 12 and 18 months of age with bilateral, congenital hearing loss. All children were exposed to spoken language, and 63.81% of children were also exposed to sign language. Caregivers completed the "Making

Dyslexia and self-control. An ego psychoanalytic perspective.

Dyslexia and the self-control problems that frequently accompany it are viewed from an ego psychoanalytic perspective. Dyslexia is conceptualized as resulting from an ego deficit in language processing; this deficit is seen as contributing to the ADHD-type symptoms often seen in dyslexic children. Lacking certain crucial components of linguistic competence, the dyslexic child is therefore also lacking a basic tool of impulse control. As a result, this child may exhibit a type of language deficit based impulsivity that has dynamic characteristics which are diagnostically significant. In additio

Effectiveness of Caregiver-Mediated Spoken Language Interventions for Children Under Five at Risk of Developmental Language Disorder: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Caregiver-mediated interventions are commonly used by Speech and Language Therapists to support early language development. Developmental Language Disorder (DLD) is associated with reduced quality of life throughout the lifespan. Understanding factors that predict intervention success is essential for developing appropriate, cost-effective therapy provision for the approximately 12% of preschool children who present with early markers for Developmental Language Disorder (DLD). This systematic review and meta-analysis examined the effectiveness of caregiver-mediated spoken

Parenting Interventions That Promote Child Protection and Development for Preschool-Age Children with Developmental Disabilities: A Global Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

Global guidelines emphasize the critical role of responsive caregiving in terms of reducing violence against children and promoting early childhood development. However, there is an absence of global evidence synthesis on the effects of early childhood parenting programs for children with developmental disabilities. This systematic review and meta-analysis aims to investigate the effectiveness of parenting interventions delivered for preschool-age children with developmental disabilities in reducing violence against children, altering violence-related factors, and promoting child development.

The Association of Maternal Sensitivity with Subsequent Cognition and Language among Children Born Preterm: An Individual Participant Data Meta-Analysis.

OBJECTIVES: To assess variations in children's cognitive and language test scores according to observed dyadic maternal sensitivity and the child's gestational age, after adjustment for known confounders. STUDY DESIGN: Systematic review and a one-stage individual participant data meta-analysis of harmonized data from 7 birth cohorts across 5 countries (n = 2560) using mixed effects linear regression. Maternal sensitivity and child cognition and language test scores were z-standardized relative to contemporary cohort-specific term-born controls. Models were adjusted for child sex, multiple bir

Variability in Quantity and Quality of Early Linguistic Experience in Children With Cochlear Implants: Evidence from Analysis of Natural Auditory Environments.

OBJECTIVES: Understanding how quantity and quality of language input vary across children with cochlear implants (CIs) is important for explaining sources of large individual differences in language outcomes of this at-risk pediatric population. Studies have mostly focused either on intervention-related, device-related, and/or patient-related factors, or relied on data from parental reports and laboratory-based speech corpus to unravel factors explaining individual differences in language outcomes among children with CIs. However, little is known about the extent to which children with CIs dif

Assessing recall in mothers' retrospective reports: concerns over children's speech and language development.

Retrospective recall about children's symptoms is used to establish early developmental patterns in clinical practice and is also utilised in child psychopathology research. Some studies have indicated that the accuracy of retrospective recall is influenced by life events. Our hypothesis was that an intervention: speech and language therapy, would adversely affect the accuracy of parent recall of early concerns about their child's speech and language development. Mothers (n = 5,390) reported on their child's speech development (child male to female ratio = 50:50) when their children were aged

Goldenhar's syndrome: a case study.

Goldenhar's Syndrome, a rare symptom complex involving craniofacial and vertebral malformations, is reviewed and a detailed case history of a 19-mo-old exhibiting the syndrome is described. This multiple-problem child exhibited a 6-mo deficit in communication skills at 12 mo of age. After 6 mo of participation in a multidisciplinary early intervention program, including speech-language therapy, the child exhibits normal language although he has articulation problems consistent with his craniofacial defects.

Representational demands in mothers' talk to preschool children in two contexts: picture book reading and a modelling task.

Shared book reading is considered to be an influential factor in language and literacy development and has been associated with more complex and demanding forms of tutorial language use. The present study seeks to examine mothers' discourse in joint picture book reading in terms of the level of representational demand which it places on the child, that is the extent to which it requires the child to engage in abstract thought. This was compared with the language used in another interactive, but more product oriented task, modelling a clown using play-doh. Twenty-four mother child dyads (in whi

Speech acts and the pragmatic deficits of autism.

In a videotaped free-play session with a parent, autistic children were compared with mental-age matched Developmental Language Delay (DLD) children and with normally developing (ND) 2-year-olds in the use of communicative acts by parent and child. Groups were matched for language level. Autistic children had more incidents of no responses, produced less affirming, turn-taking vocalization, and gesture, and were less likely to initiate communication than other children. Parent groups differed only in a greater amount of initiating and use of imperatives by parents of autistic children. Few rel

Lexical Repetition Properties of Caregiver Speech and Language Development in Children With Cochlear Implants.

Purpose Early language input plays an important role in child language and cognitive development (e.g., Gilkerson et al., 2018; Hart & Risley, 1995). In this study, we examined the effects of child's hearing status on lexical repetition properties of speech produced by their caregivers with normal hearing (NH). In addition, we investigated the relationship between maternal lexical repetition properties and later language skills in English-learning infants with cochlear implants (CIs). Method In a free-play session, 17 mothers and their prelingually deaf infants who received CIs before 2 years

Stimulating language development in the first 1000 days: A scoping review.

Acquiring basic language skills is one of the key developmental milestones a child must reach in its early years. Failing to do so can be a sign of language disorders and can lead to problems in later life that can impede all other domains of child development, including socio-emotional development, cognitive development, and later academic achievement. Since parents play a crucial role in early language development, it is important to support them with best practices and provide them with evidence-informed knowledge on language development of their infant. In this scoping review, we narrative

Working with linguistically diverse families in early intervention: misconceptions and missed opportunities.

Traditionally, speech-language pathologists (SLPs) and other professionals have held the belief that children with speech and language disabilities are unable to successfully learn more than one language. It is often automatically assumed that exposing young children to two languages will cause confusion and significant delays in the learning of any language. Because of this belief, many families have been influenced to give up their home language in their efforts to ensure their child's successful learning of English. Yet it has been documented that children who are learning two languages sim

Spontaneous productions of infinitive clauses by English-speaking children with and without specific language impairment.

As a group, children with specific language impairment (SLI) have presented with lower levels of proficiency with infinitive clauses relative to comparison groups with typical language (TL). The presence of considerable individual variability within those affected by SLI, however, remains unexplained. Furthermore, the status of infinitive clause productions in children with language impairments that do not meet criteria for SLI, because of either low nonverbal abilities or other concomitant conditions, is unknown. Previous studies focused on children with SLI and have not included children who

Serial auditory-evoked potentials in the diagnosis and monitoring of a child with Landau-Kleffner syndrome.

BACKGROUND: A boy, aged 2 1/2 yr, experienced sudden deterioration of speech and language abilities. He saw multiple medical professionals across 2 yr. By almost 5 yr, his vocabulary diminished from 50 words to 4, and he was referred to our speech and hearing center. PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to heighten awareness of Landau-Kleffner syndrome (LKS) and emphasize the importance of an objective test battery that includes serial auditory-evoked potentials (AEPs) to audiologists who often are on the front lines of diagnosis and treatment delivery when faced with a child experiencing u

[Early treatment. An overview].

"Early training" for deaf children was introduced some twenty years ago. The idea rapidly gained ground for using the same principles to help as early as possible all children suffering from a handicap the diagnosis of which could be made at birth or very early in life, as well as those children who are retarded or language-risk children. Such interventions take account of the parents, the child, and are aimed at encouraging or furthering everything in the field of arousal, communication and language. In many respects speech therapists are the best trained to meet the needs of multidirectional
