Global Implementation of the Nutrition-Friendly School Initiative (NFSI): A Scoping Review of Strategies, Challenges, Barriers, and Facilitators.

BACKGROUND: The Nutrition-Friendly School Initiative (NFSI) is a whole-school approach designed to address the triple burden of malnutrition among school-aged children. However, evidence on its implementation across diverse settings remains fragmented. METHODS: This scoping review followed Arksey and O'Malley's framework and searched PubMed, Web of Science, Embase, Scopus, and gray literature sources for studies explicitly implementing the NFSI framework. FINDINGS: Sixteen records were included. Evidence suggests that NFSI implementation improves nutrition knowledge, dietary behaviors, and s

Nutritional management of infants and toddlers with chronic renal failure.

Normal renal function is an essential prerequisite for normal nutrition. Renal failure results in malnutrition and growth retardation, which are particularly marked when renal failure has its onset early in life. Conversely, the careful application of nutritional therapy can ameliorate the effects of renal failure and allow improved well being and growth and possibly retard the rate of progression of renal failure. Nutritional therapy includes the provision of an adequate energy intake, appropriate intakes of water, electrolytes, vitamins and minerals and regulation of protein and phosphorus i

Delayed avoidant restrictive food intake disorder diagnosis leading to Ogilvie's syndrome in an adolescent.

PURPOSE: Avoidant restrictive food intake disorder (ARFID) was recently characterized, according to the DSM-5 classification, as a feeding and eating disorder (FED). However, ARFID remains poorly known by most pediatricians, but also by psychiatrists and primary care professionals. Despite the fact that patients with ARFID generally have a higher BMI than patients with anorexia nervosa, our purpose was to highlight the fact that they may present severe nutritional deficiencies and major somatic complications when the diagnosis is delayed. METHOD: We describe here a case of a 16-year-old boy w

The Impact of Maternal Eating Disorders on Dietary Intake and Eating Patterns during Pregnancy: A Systematic Review.

Maternal nutrition in pregnancy has a key influence on optimum fetal health. Eating disorders (EDs) during pregnancy may have detrimental effects on fetal growth and the child's early development. There is limited knowledge concerning the eating behavior, dietary intake and derived nutritional biomarkers as well as the nutrient supplementation in women with EDs during pregnancy. We performed a systematic review according to the PRISMA statement to synthesize current evidence in this field. Of N = 1203 hits, 13 full-texts were included in the qualitative synthesis. While women with current Bing

Poor nutrition is a serious problem in children with cerebral palsy in Palawan, the Philippines.

Children with cerebral palsy (CP) in developed countries have poor nutritional status; however there is little data from developing countries. In Palawan, in the Philippines, the nutritional status of 31 children with CP was compared to that of their siblings (n = 20) and a control group of neighbourhood children (n = 64), matched for age and sex. The children's weights, heights and armspans were measured. The heights of children with CP could not be measured and were estimated from their armspans using an equation relating height to armspan in siblings and controls. Haemoglobin levels of the

National vitamin A survey in Panama.

The prevalence of vitamin A deficiency in a nationally representative sample of children 12-59 months old in Panama was assessed using serum retinol levels and dietary indicators. The median serum retinol level found was 1.27 +/- 0.42 mumol/L (38 micrograms/dL); 6.0% of the study sample providing adequate blood specimens had levels below 0.7 mumol/L (20 micrograms/dL), indicating deficient vitamin A intake. The Panama City Metropolitan Area and the country's western region had the highest prevalences of low serum retinol levels (below 0.7 mumol/L in 9% and 6% of the study children, respectivel

Malnutrition, gastroenteritis and trypsinogen concentration in hospitalised Aboriginal children.

OBJECTIVE: To explore relationships between malnutrition and pancreatic damage in hospitalised aboriginal children. METHODS: Immunoreactive trypsinogen (IRT) concentrations were measured in two populations of hospitalised aboriginal children in Australia: 472 children aged 0-3 years, in Alice Springs (Northern Territory); and 187 children aged 0-16 years in Mount Isa (Queensland). Correlation of whole blood IRT with height and weight z-scores, four-site skinfold thickness and upper arm circumference was sought. RESULTS: In Mount Isa, the geometric mean IRT concentration rose with decreasing

Pellagra, a re-emerging disease: a case report of a girl from a community ravaged by insurgency.

Pellagra is a nutritional disorder of niacin deficiency which is characterized by triad of dermatitis, diarrhea and dementia. It is often seen in a state of poor nutrition among alcoholics, homeless and patients suffering from malabsorption. Though seldom occurs in children, its re-emerging is seen as a result of worsening food security in vulnerable population during conflict or insurgency. We report the case of 12-year-old female pastoralist who presented darkening and thickening of the hands, feet, ankles, neck and her upper trunk. Conflicts and insurgency usually occur in resource constrai

Simplifying and optimising management of acute malnutrition in children aged 6 to 59 months: study protocol for a 3 arms community-based individually randomised controlled trial in decentralised Niger.

BACKGROUND: Simplified approaches of acute malnutrition (AM) treatment have been conducted over the past 5 years intending to unify processes and increase coverage among children aged 6 to 59 months without medical complication. The Optimsing treatment for Acute Malnutrition (OptiMA) and the Combined Protocol for Acute Malnutrition Study (ComPAS) are mid-upper arm circumference (MUAC)-based approaches treating children with MUAC < 125 mm or oedema with one sole product-ready-to-use therapeutic food-at a gradually tapered doses. This trial aims to compare the OptiMA and ComPAS strategies to the

Malnutrition in children with cancer: incidence and consequence.

Overt malnutrition in children with cancer is seen with surprising frequency: up to 37.5% in a group of patients with disease metastatic to or from bone, and 17.5% in a group of newly diagnosed patients with abdominal or pelvic tumors. It appears more frequent in some cancers. e.g., Ewing's sarcoma, than in others, e.g., osteosarcoma. Criteria for diagnosis of overt malnutrition are applicable to the child with cancer. Such overt malnutrition can be successfully and safely treated with intravenous hyperalimentation (IVH). Marginal malnutrition is a state that can be inferred from clinical beha

Nexus between maternal underweight and child anthropometric status in South and South-East Asian countries.

OBJECTIVES: Maternal underweight and childhood malnutrition are life-threatening public health concerns in several South and South-East Asian nations. The aim of this study was to better design interventions and prevent malnutrition of children in the region by exploring the association of maternal underweight with children's anthropometric status. METHODS: The Demographic and Health Survey's (DHS) most recent nationally representative data from eight South and South-East Asian states, collected between 2014 and 2018, were pooled for the present study. A multivariable logistic regression mode

Beyond therapeutic feeding: a call for integrated strategies to end child malnutrition in Somalia.

Somalia records one of the highest global burdens of child wasting and stunting, with approximately 1.7-1.85 million children under five estimated to be affected by acute malnutrition annually during 2022-2025, including approximately 421,000-513,550 children with severe acute malnutrition. For over two decades, the dominant policy response has been community-based management of acute malnutrition (CMAM), a curative intervention that treats clinical endpoints rather than underlying drivers. Despite meeting international cure-rate standards, CMAM alone cannot address the food insecurity, water,

Management of a granulomatous lesion in a patient with Kindler's Syndrome.

Kindler's syndrome is a rare vesiculobullous dermatological disorder sometimes involving multiple organs. First described by Kindler. The differential diagnosis includes Rothmund-Thomson syndrome and epidermolysis bullosa. Fisher's criteria have simplified the diagnosis with major and minor criteria. Oral manifestation of this syndrome includes multiple painful oral ulcers in the mucosa, periodontal attachment loss, gingival bleeding, and fragile mucosa. These manifestations may impair proper nutrition intake, may cause growth and development problems. This case report deals with the managemen

Epidermolysis bullosa: Careful monitoring and no touch principle for anesthesia management.

Epidermolysis bullosa (EB) is a rare genetic mechanobullous disorder, with excessive fragility of the skin and mucous membranes. Avoiding mechanical injury to the skin and mucous membranes is essential in the anesthetic management. Shearing forces applied to the skin result in bullae formation, while compressive forces to the skin are tolerated. The challenge is to use monitoring technology without damaging the epithelial surface. Difficult airway, positioning issues, nutritional deficiencies, poor immunity, and carcinogenic potential add to the comorbidities. We managed a child with EB underg
