Surface bio-erosion and structural alteration of colored and agricultural plastics induced by Scenedesmus dimorphus and Chlorella vulgaris.

Plastic pollution remains a major environmental challenge because synthetic polymers and their additives can resist biological degradation. This study investigated the early stage surface modification of commercially formulated plastics following exposure to the freshwater microalgae Scenedesmus dimorphus and Chlorella vulgaris. Transparent and pigmented polyethylene terephthalate (PET) bottles and agricultural low density polyethylene (LDPE) films were incubated with microalgal cultures for 100 days under controlled laboratory conditions. Changes in plastic mass and surface properties were ev

Evaluation of growth and antioxidant responses of freshwater microalgae Chlorella sorokiniana and Scenedesmus dimorphus under exposure of moxifloxacin.

As one of the fourth-generation fluoroquinolone antibiotics, moxifloxacin (MOX) has been frequently released to the aquatic environment, threatening local organisms. However, researches on its ecotoxicity to aquatic organisms are still limited. This study analyzed effects of MOX on the growth, photosynthesis and oxidative stress of two common types of freshwater microalgae, Chlorella sorokiniana and Scenedesmus dimorphus. The 96 h-EC50 values of MOX for C. sorokiniana and S. dimorphus were 28.42 and 26.37 mg/L, respectively. Although variations of specific indicators for photosynthetic fluores

Production, extraction and characterization of Chlorella vulgaris soluble polysaccharides and their applications in AgNPs biosynthesis and biostimulation of plant growth.

Chlorella vulgaris, like a wide range of other microalgae, are able to grow mixotrophically. This maximizes its growth and production of polysaccharides (PS). The extracted polysaccharides have a complex monosaccharide composition (fructose, maltose, lactose and glucose), sulphate (210.65 ± 10.5 mg g-1 PS), uronic acids (171.97 ± 5.7 mg g-1 PS), total protein content (32.99 ± 2.1 mg g-1 PS), and total carbohydrate (495.44 ± 8.4 mg g-1 PS). Fourier Transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) analysis of the extracted polysaccharides showed the presence of N-H, O-H, C-H, -CH3, >CH2, COO-1, S=O and t

Effects of Nitrogen and Phosphorus Limitation on Lipid Accumulation by Chlorella kessleri str. UTEX 263 Grown in Darkness.

Growing algae in darkness for biodiesel production eliminates the challenges of evaporation and light penetration reported for open ponds and the costs and fouling that plague photobioreactors. The current study demonstrated that Chlorella kessleri str. UTEX 263 could grow heterotrophically in the dark on pure sugars or lignocellulosic hydrolysates of plant biomass. Hydrolysates of a prairie grass native to Kansas, Big bluestem (Andropogon gerardii), supported the growth of C. kessleri in the dark. Nitrogen limitation stimulated the accumulation of biodiesel lipids by 10-fold in heterotrophic

Uptake of inorganic and organic nutrient species during cultivation of a Chlorella isolate in anaerobically digested dairy waste.

A natural assemblage of microalgae from a facultative lagoon system treating municipal wastewater was enriched for growth in the effluents of an anaerobic digester processing dairy waste. A green microalga with close resemblance to Chlorella sp. was found to be dominant after multiple cycles of sub-culturing. Subsequently, the strain (designated as LLAI) was isolated and cultivated in 20× diluted digester effluents under various incident light intensities (255-1,100 µmoles m-2 s-1 ) to systematically assess growth and nutrient utilization. Our results showed that LLAI production increased with

Role of extracellular polymeric substances from Chlorella vulgaris in the removal of ammonium and orthophosphate under the stress of cadmium.

The interactions between the soluble extracellular polymeric substances (S-EPS), bound EPS (B-EPS) of algae and heavy metal, would affect the removal of ammonium (NH4(+)-N) and orthophosphate (PO4(3-)-P) from wastewater by algae-based techniques. This study investigated the role of Cd(2+)-mediated EPS from Chlorella vulgaris on NH4(+)-N and PO4(3-)-P removal. The results showed that the removal efficiencies of NH4(+)-N and PO4(3-)-P still separately remained 62.6% and 64.9% under 1.0mg/L Cd(2+), compared to those without Cd(2+), mainly attributing to enhanced S-EPS and B-EPS contents of the al

Combined effect of copper and cadmium on heavy metal ion bioaccumulation and antioxidant enzymes induction in Chlorella vulgaris.

The relationships between metal uptake and antioxidant enzyme activities or a response to membrane lipid peroxidation (i.e., malondialdehyde production) in Chlorella vulgaris exposed to Cu and Cd compounds singly and in combination were investigated. The results showed that bioaccumulation of a single metal was influenced by the presence of the other metal. The activities of superoxide dismutase and peroxidase increased to more than fivefold of the control after exposure to Cu(1.5 μM) alone or to Cu(1.5 μM) with Cd mixtures. Malondialdehyde levels in C. vulgaris also increased to approximately

Effects of glufosinate on antioxidant enzymes, subcellular structure, and gene expression in the unicellular green alga Chlorella vulgaris.

Greater exposure to herbicide increases the likelihood of harmful effects in humans and the environment. Glufosinate, a non-selective herbicide, inhibits glutamine synthetase (GS) and thus blocks ammonium assimilation in plants. In the present study, the aquatic unicellular alga Chlorella vulgaris was chosen to assess the effects of acute glufosinate toxicity. We observed physiological changes during 12-96 h of exposure, and gene transcription during 6-48 h of exposure. Exposure to glufosinate increased malondialdehyde content by up to 2.73 times compared with the control, suggesting that ther

[Regulation of glutamine metabolism in Chlorella pyrenoidosa. Mechanisms of regulating the activity of glutamine synthetase during ammonia assimilation].

Glutamine synthetase (GS) (E.C.6.3.1.2) activity in Chlorella cells decreased when NH4+ was added to nitrogen-free growth medium. This GS inactivation had such a rate, that it could not be due to the repression of enzyme synthesis: the GS activity decreased by 20% within 5 minutes of NH4+ assimilation. Glutamine content in cell increased in 2.5 times for this period. In vitro experiments have shown that glutamine is a strong inhibitor of GS from Chlorella grown in the presence of NO3-, and in a less degree--an inhibitor of GS from cells grown in ammonium-containing medium. The data obtained ar

Non-covalent complexes of Chlorella pyrenoidosa antioxidant peptides with chlorogenic acid: structure-activity relationships and potential synergistic cytoprotection.

Non-covalent complexation with chlorogenic acid (CA) was investigated to remodel complex-level structure-activity relationships of antioxidant peptides (AOPs) from Chlorella pyrenoidosa protein hydrolysates (CPPH) and to evaluate their potential cytoprotective interaction. CPPH-CA complex formation and conformational/microenvironmental changes were characterized by FTIR, intrinsic fluorescence, UV-vis, and interfacial/colloidal measurements. Antioxidant activity and synergy of CPPH-CA and peptide-CA systems were quantified using ABTS, DPPH, and FRAP assays. Representative AOPs were identified

Statistical optimization of Chlorella vulgaris polysaccharides-mediated synthesis of platinum nanoparticles with dual functions: anticancer and anticoagulant activities.

BACKGROUND: The biomedical application of platinum nanoparticles (PtNPs) has gained increasing attention in recent years; however, conventional chemical synthesis often depends on harsh conditions and toxic reagents, which restrict their medical use due to concerns of cytotoxicity and environmental hazards. As a result, the development of eco-friendly and biocompatible methods has become a major focus in nanobiotechnology. This study introduces a green method using intracellular polysaccharides from Chlorella vulgaris strain ESA251 as reducing and stabilizing agents to create biocompatible CV-

Oral immunization of Nile tilapia with Chlorella-bioencapsulated multi-epitope fusion antigen effectively protects against Streptococcus agalactiae infection.

Streptococcus agalactiae is an important bacterial pathogen of farmed tilapia; however, practical oral vaccines with stable protective efficacy remain limited because of poor antigen stability and low intestinal delivery efficiency. In this study, three immunodominant epitopes derived from the S. agalactiae surface immunogenic protein Sip, C5a peptidase ScpB, and leucine-rich repeat protein LrrG, as well as a multi-epitope fusion antigen (MEFA) constructed from these epitopes, were individually expressed in Chlorella sorokiniana, thereby establishing a microalgae-based oral vaccine system. Sulfadiazine proliferated antibiotic resistance genes in the phycosphere of Chlorella pyrenoidosa: Insights from bacterial communities and microalgal metabolites.

The phycosphere is an essential ecological niche for the proliferation of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs). However, how ARGs' potential hosts change and the driving mechanism of metabolites under antibiotic stress in the phycosphere have seldom been researched. We investigated the response of Chlorella pyrenoidosa and the structure and abundance of free-living (FL) and particle-attached (PA) bacteria, ARGs, and metabolites under sulfadiazine by using real-time quantitative PCR, 16 S rRNA high-throughput. The linkage of key bacterial communities, ARGs, and metabolites through correlations wa

Visible-light-activated Fe2O3-TiO2 nanoparticles enhance biofouling resistance of polyethersulfone ultrafiltration membranes against marine algae Chlorella vulgaris.

This study investigated the modification of polyethersulfone (PES) ultrafiltration membranes with TiO2 and Fe2O3-TiO2 nanoparticles to enhance their hydrophilicity and biofouling resistance against the marine microalgae Chlorella vulgaris. It is a common freshwater and marine microalga that readily forms biofilms on membrane surfaces, leading to significant flux decline and increased operational costs in ultrafiltration processes. The microalgae cells and their extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) adhere to the membrane surface, creating a dense fouling layer that impedes water permeation.

Using Algal Virus Paramecium bursaria Chlorella Virus as a Human Adenovirus Surrogate for Validation of UV Treatment Systems.

Adenovirus is among the most UV-resistant waterborne human pathogens. There is a need to identify nonpathogenic surrogates for adenovirus for the water treatment industry. In this study, the feasibility of using the algal virus Paramecium bursaria chlorella virus (PBCV-1) as an adenovirus surrogate for validation of UV reactors was evaluated. The UV dose-response behavior of PBCV-1 to monochromatic UV radiation at 254 nm and action spectrum for wavelengths ranging from 214 to 289 nm were measured. A culture-based infectivity assay was used to evaluate viral inactivation, and a quantitative PCR

Effects of Ammonium Chloride-Mediated Control of Digestive Vacuole Acidification on Endosymbiosis Between Paramecium tritobursaria and Chlorella variabilis.

Paramecium tritobursaria is a ciliate that harbors intracellular Chlorella sp. symbionts and serves as a model organism for studying endosymbiosis. After ingestion by P. tritobursaria, some algal cells are digested within digestive vacuoles (DVs), whereas others escape digestion and become enclosed by a perialgal vacuole (PV) membrane, establishing a stable symbiosis. We investigated whether inhibiting DV acidification with ammonium chloride (NH4Cl) modulates algal digestion and the establishment of endosymbiosis. Congo red-stained yeast assays showed that treatment with 20 mM NH4Cl for 40 min

Protective effects of biogenic selenium nanoparticles synthesized by Chlorella Vulgaris against bisphenol a-induced metabolic disturbances in rats.

BACKGROUND: Bisphenol A (BPA), a xenoestrogen and endocrine disruptor, is widely used in plastic and polycarbonate products, contributing to metabolic disorders such as dyslipidemia and obesity. Algae, like Chlorella vulgaris (CV), contain highly active compounds that act as natural reducing agents, converting inorganic selenium into nanoparticle form. METHODS: In this study, we developed novel biologically synthesized selenium nanoparticles using CV (SeNPs-CV) and investigated their protective properties in comparison to physically synthesized selenium nanoparticles (SeNPs) against BPA-induc

A hybrid continuous-discrete single-cell model for Chlorella vulgaris integrating photophysiology, internal nutrient quotas and multiple fission.

Population-scale models of microalgal growth represent the culture as average biomass and do not explicitly describe discrete cell-cycle events such as commitment, size variation and daughter-cell number. This limitation is relevant for Chlorella vulgaris, which divides by multiple fission and produces a variable number of autospores according to its physiological state. This study proposed a hybrid continuous-discrete single-cell model integrating photophysiology, internal nitrogen and phosphorus quotas, chlorophyll dynamics, the functional state of photosystem II, reactive oxygen species, vi
