Non-HDL Cholesterol and Residual Cardiometabolic Risk in Middle Eastern Patients with Atherosclerotic Cardiovascular Disease.

Background: Although low-density-lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) remains the primary target of lipid-lowering therapy, many patients with atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD) continue to experience cardiovascular events. This residual risk suggests that LDL-C alone does not fully capture the total atherogenic burden. Alternative lipid measures, including non-high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (non-HDL-C) and cholesterol ratios, may provide a more comprehensive risk assessment, particularly in populations with a high prevalence of metabolic disorders. This study assessed the prevale

Normal HDL Cholesterol Efflux and Anti-Inflammatory Capacities in Type 2 Diabetes Despite Lipidomic Abnormalities.

OBJECTIVE: To assess whether, in type 2 diabetes (T2D) patients, lipidomic abnormalities in high-density lipoprotein (HDL) are associated with impaired cholesterol efflux capacity and anti-inflammatory effect, 2 pro-atherogenic abnormalities. DESIGN AND METHODS: This is a secondary analysis of the Lira-NAFLD study, including 20 T2D patients at T0 and 25 control subjects. Using liquid chromatography/tandem mass spectrometry, we quantified 110 species of the main HDL phospholipids and sphingolipids. Cholesterol efflux capacity was measured on THP-1 macrophages. The anti-inflammatory effect of H

Elevated Apolipoprotein A1 and HDL Cholesterol Associated with Age-related Macular Degeneration: 2 Population Cohorts.

CONTEXT: To enable prevention and treatment of age-related macular degeneration (AMD), understanding risk factors for AMD is important. OBJECTIVE: We tested the hypotheses that elevated plasma apolipoprotein A1 and high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol and low levels of low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol are associated with increased risk of AMD. METHODS: From the Danish general population, we studied 106 703 and 16 032 individuals in the Copenhagen General Population Study (CGPS) and the Copenhagen City Heart Study (CCHS) with median follow-up of 9 and 32 years, respectively. The

Triglycerides and low HDL cholesterol predict coronary heart disease risk in patients with stable angina.

We assessed whether high triglycerides (TG) and low high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) levels, expressed by an increased TG/HDL-C ratio, predict coronary atherosclerotic disease (CAD) outcomes in patients with stable angina. We studied 355 patients (60 ± 9 years, 211 males) with stable angina who underwent coronary computed tomography angiography (CTA), were managed clinically and followed for 4.5 ± 0.9 years. The primary composite outcome was all-cause mortality and non-fatal myocardial infarction. At baseline, the proportion of males, patients with metabolic syndrome, diabetes and

High-Density Lipoprotein Cholesterol (HDL-C) Levels Independently Correlates With Cardiac Arrhythmias and Atrial Fibrillation.

OBJECTIVE: Acute coronary syndrome is frequently complicated by rhythm disturbances, yet any association between high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol levels and arrhythmias in the setting of non-ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction (non-STEMI) is uncertain. The goal of this study was to evaluate any association between HDL-cholesterol levels and arrhythmias in the setting of non-STEMI. METHODS: Retrospective data from Phoenix Veterans Affair Medical Center records were utilized for our study. A total of 6881 patients were found who presented during 2000 to 2003 with non-STEMI with

Patients With Coronary Endothelial Dysfunction Have Impaired Cholesterol Efflux Capacity and Reduced HDL Particle Concentration.

RATIONALE: Coronary endothelial dysfunction (ED)-an early marker of atherosclerosis-increases the risk of cardiovascular events. OBJECTIVE: We tested the hypothesis that cholesterol efflux capacity and high-density lipoprotein (HDL) particle concentration predict coronary ED better than HDL-cholesterol (HDL-C). METHODS AND RESULTS: We studied 80 subjects with nonobstructive (<30% stenosis) coronary artery disease. ED was defined as <50% change in coronary blood flow in response to intracoronary infusions of acetylcholine during diagnostic coronary angiography. Cholesterol efflux capacity and

HDL mimetic peptide CER-522 treatment regresses left ventricular diastolic dysfunction in cholesterol-fed rabbits.

OBJECTIVES: High-density lipoprotein (HDL) infusions induce rapid improvement of experimental atherosclerosis in rabbits but their effect on ventricular function remains unknown. We aimed to evaluate the effects of the HDL mimetic peptide CER-522 on left ventricular diastolic dysfunction (LVDD). METHODS: Rabbits were fed with a cholesterol- and vitamin D2-enriched diet until mild aortic valve stenosis and hypercholesterolemia-induced LV hypertrophy and LVDD developed. Animals then received saline or 10 or 30mg/kg CER-522 infusions 6 times over 2weeks. We performed serial echocardiograms and L

Egg intake improves carotenoid status by increasing plasma HDL cholesterol in adults with metabolic syndrome.

Metabolic syndrome (MetS) is associated with reductions in plasma lutein and zeaxanthin, along with altered composition of their lipoprotein transporters which may affect disease risk. Egg yolk intake has been demonstrated to increase plasma lutein and zeaxanthin in other populations. The objective of this study was to investigate the effects of whole egg feeding on plasma and lipoprotein carotenoids in participants with MetS. Participants consumed 3 whole eggs per day (EGG, n = 20) or the equivalent amount of yolk-free egg substitute (SUB, n = 17), as part of a carbohydrate-restricted diet (C

Triglyceride-to-HDL cholesterol ratio. Predictive value for CHD severity and new-onset heart failure.

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to explore the association between the triglyceride-to-high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (TG/HDL-C) ratio and the severity of coronary heart disease (CHD). It also evaluated the clinical role of the TG/HDL-C ratio in predicting in-hospital CHD events and the long-term prognosis of CHD patients. METHODS: According to the results of coronary angiography examinations, 317 patients were enrolled in the study and classified into a CHD group (n=233) and a control group (n=84). The TG/HDL-C ratio was calculated at baseline. The CHD group was then further classified int

Associations of non-high-density lipoprotein cholesterol, triglycerides and the total cholesterol/HDL-c ratio with arterial stiffness independent of low-density lipoprotein cholesterol in a Chinese population.

Several lipid parameters are closely associated with residual cardiovascular risk. We aimed to confirm that in a range of low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-c) levels (from <70 mg/dl to ≥160 mg/dl), other lipid parameters, such as triglyceride (TG) level, non-high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (non-HDL-c) level, and the total cholesterol (TC)/HDL-c ratio, are still related to arterial stiffness, which is a recognized marker of atherosclerosis. In this cross-sectional study, we measured brachial-ankle pulse wave velocity (baPWV), as well as clinical and biochemical indices in 16,733 Chi

Healthier Lipid Profiles of Japanese Adults, Especially in Women with Elevated High-Density Lipoprotein Cholesterol (HDL-C), Are Associated with Low HDL-C Peroxide Content.

Japanese adults typically have healthier lipid profiles than American and European adults and a lower prevalence and later onset of atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD). Many Japanese also have uniquely elevated levels of high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C). The following analysis examined the relationship between HDL-C level and HDL-C peroxide content, a bioindicator of unhealthy lipid metabolism in Japanese adults. Blood samples were collected from 463 participants, 31-84 years of age, who lived in Tokyo. A second blood sample was collected 5 years later from 241 of the pa

A nutrient-dense, high-fiber, fruit-based supplement bar increases HDL cholesterol, particularly large HDL, lowers homocysteine, and raises glutathione in a 2-wk trial.

Dietary intake modulates disease risk, but little is known how components within food mixtures affect pathophysiology. A low-calorie, high-fiber, fruit-based nutrient-dense bar of defined composition (e.g., vitamins and minerals, fruit polyphenolics, β-glucan, docosahexaenoic acid) appropriate for deconstruction and mechanistic studies is described and evaluated in a pilot trial. The bar was developed in collaboration with the U.S. Department of Agriculture. Changes in cardiovascular disease and diabetes risk biomarkers were measured after 2 wk twice-daily consumption of the bar, and compared

Longitudinal triglyceride and HDL cholesterol, but not LDL cholesterol associated with the risk of incident type 2 diabetes: Evidence from a multi-trajectory analysis.

PURPOSE: There are inconsistent findings regarding the associations between lipids and type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), partially due to ignoring the joint effects of longitudinal patterns in lipids simultaneously. This study aimed to investigate the association of joint multi-trajectory of different lipids with the risk of type 2 diabetes. METHODS: We enrolled 71,043 participants free of T2DM from the Kailuan study. Using group-based multi-trajectory modeling, joint multi-trajectory of triglyceride (TG), low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C), and high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (H

Serum testosterone level is the major determinant of the male-female differences in serum levels of high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol and HDL2 cholesterol.

We studied prospectively the effect of exogenous testosterone (testosterone undecanoate [TU] 160 mg/d orally) on lipoprotein profiles in eight hypogonadal males and 10 females (female-to-male transsexuals). Testosterone administration to androgen-deficient men and to eugonadal women produced similar serum levels of testosterone (7.67 +/- 5.47 nmol/L v 8.45 +/- 3.81 nmol/L) and 5 alpha-dihydrotestosterone (DHT) (3.27 +/- 3.52 nmol/L v 3.97 +/- 2.35 nmol/L) in the two groups, while serum estradiol levels were three to four times higher in the females (90 +/- 24 pmol/Lv 376 +/- 315 pmol/L). Non-HDL-to-HDL cholesterol ratio predicts incident T2DM and CHD in non-alcoholic fatty liver disease: evidence from a large clinical cohort and NHANES.

BACKGROUNDS: Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is a common metabolic disorder linked to increased risk of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) and coronary heart disease (CHD). The Non-HDL-to-HDL Cholesterol Ratio (NHHR) is an emerging lipid marker, but its predictive value for T2DM and CHD in NAFLD patients is unclear. This study evaluated the association between NHHR and the incidence of T2DM and CHD in a large NAFLD cohort. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective cohort study involving 13,741 NAFLD patients from the Affiliated Hospital of Guangdong Medical University (2018-2025) and valid

[Plasma levels of vitamin A and its protein vectors (RBP and PA), carotene, total cholesterol and cholesterol-HDL in patients with dysplasia of the uterine cervix].

In this study plasma levels of vitamin A, carotenoids, retinol binding protein (RBP), prealbumin (PA), HDL-and total cholesterol were determined in 19 female subjects with cervical dysplasia and compared to those of the healthy female subjects described in our previous research. Plasma levels of vitamin A and carotene were determined by a spectrophotometric method using trifluoroacetic acid, plasma RBP and PA by single radial immunodiffusion and HDL- and total cholesterol by enzymatic colorimetry. Plasma mean values of vitamin A and HDL-cholesterol were lower (P less than 0.05 and P less than

HDL cholesterol efflux capacity and cholesterol loading capacity in long-term fasting: Evidence from a prospective, single-arm interventional study in healthy individuals.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Long-term fasting (LF) is increasingly emerging as a non-pharmacological approach to modulate risk factors associated with the development of atherosclerotic cardiovascular diseases (ASCVD). However, protection from ASCVD is more tied to the functionality of high-density lipoprotein (HDL) than its plasma levels. Our prospective interventional study focuses on the functional properties of lipoproteins in modulating cholesterol homeostasis on peripheral cells and examines how LF may influence this and lipoprotein subclass composition. For that purpose, we investigated its im

Circulating Amino Acid Profiles in Adults with Abnormal Body Mass Index: Associations with Triglycerides, HDL Cholesterol, LDL Cholesterol, and Total Cholesterol in an Exploratory Cross-Sectional Metabolomic Pilot Study.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Circulating amino acids are not only markers of nutritional status; in experimental and interventional models they have been linked to hepatic lipogenesis, lipoprotein assembly, mitochondrial fatty acid oxidation, and bile acid conjugation, which makes them plausible candidate correlates of obesity-related lipid dysregulation. Despite this, most metabolomic studies of excess adiposity have focused either on a single lipid parameter-typically triglycerides-or only on branched-chain amino acids (BCAAs). This pilot study was designed to generate hypotheses about these assoc
