BACKGROUND: Maffucci's syndrome is a dysembryoplasia of the mesoderm, explaining the dual involvement of cartilage and vascular tissue. The risk of malignant degeneration or associated tumors is high in this uncommon disease. We report a case of Maffucci's syndrome associated with squamous cell carcinoma of the cavum.
CASE REPORT: A 37-year-old man consulted for multiple angiomas and chondromas which had developed since childhood. The diagnosis of Maffucci's syndrome was obvious. Radiological exploration of the limbs confirmed chondromatosis and biopsy of the cavum performed because of the oc

BACKGROUND: Chondrosarcomas of the larynx are malignant tumours that most commonly originate from the hyaline cartilage. Chondrosarcoma of the larynx, the most common type of low-grade tumour, accounts for 1% of all laryngeal neoplasms.
CASE SUMMARY: We present the case of a 60-year-old female patient who developed progressive hoarseness and shortness of breath over a 2-mo period. The patient had undergone resection of a laryngeal tumour 14 years before the aforementioned symptoms occurred, and histopathological analysis indicated that it was a chondroma. During the assessment of the patient,

A 32-year-old man complained of left gonalgia for 2 years and noticed a soft part tumor on the lateral side of his left knee. Roentgenograms showed some small calcified shadows at the same site of the tumor. Arthroscopy revealed a lateral meniscus to be an incomplete discoid with degenerative tears. At the operation, a multilocular soft part tumor was noticed in continuity with the lateral meniscus macroscopically. Small, loose bodies and gelatinous fluid were found in the cavity of the tumor. Histologically loose bodies were chondroma and the soft part tumor was meniscal cyst. The meniscal cy

Carney triad is a rare non-hereditary condition affecting young females and characterized by metachronous or synchronous occurrence of epithelioid gastrointestinal stromal tumours (GISTs), pulmonary chondroma and extra-adrenal paraganglioma. The genetic alterations in Carney triad-related GISTs have not been well studied. We evaluated GISTs from three females with incomplete Carney triad for KIT and PDGFRA mutations and studied the DNA by comparative genomic hybridization (CGH). All GISTs originated in the antrum and had a monotonous epithelioid morphology. Two patients had GISTs and pulmonary

Carney described a disorder characterized by the presence of several uncommon tumors which were pulmonary chondromas, gastric sarcomas and extra-adrenal paragangliomas. We report a 14 year-old girl in whom multiple gastric tumors were discovered during a study of an iron deficiency anemia and was subjected to a partial gastrectomy. At 25 years of age, she developed several pulmonary chondromas and at 33 years, a mediastinal tumor with features of an extra-adrenal paraganglioma was found. At 35 years of age, a total gastrectomy was performed to remove a gastrointestinal stromal tumor with excis

Bizarre parosteal osteochondromatous proliferation (BPOP, also known as Nora's lesion) is a rare, benign, locally aggressive condition defined as osteochondromatous exostosis arising from the bony cortex. BPOP presents predominantly in the 2nd and 3rd decades of life, and commonly arises from the periosteum of metacarpals and metatarses, though rare locations have been reported, including the long bones, the maxillae, the bones of calvaria, and the sesamoids. The case of an osteochondromatous lesion in an infant with an intra-abdominal mass arising from the iliac wing, an atypical location of

Carney's triad is a syndrome of unknown etiology, representing a combination of gastrointestinal stromal tumors, bronchial chondromas and vagal, adrenal or paraadrenal paragangliomas. Two of the Carney's triad components-the paragangliomas and the gastrointestinal stromal tumors-are potentially lethal. Since its first description in 1977, 79 cases have been reported so far. We report an 84-year-old male patient, who died of a hypertensive cerebral hemorrhage. Well-differentiated clear cell carcinoma of the right kidney, chondroma of the right bronchus and multiple jejunal stromal tumors were d

A 48-year-old woman presented with chest symptoms. Multiple lesions seen on chest imaging were found to be pulmonary chondromas following surgical resection. Whole body magnetic resonance scan performed to investigate the possibility of Carney triad demonstrated a gastric lesion. This was resected and found to be a gastrointestinal stromal tumor. No evidence of paragangliomata was found on imaging. A diagnosis of incomplete Carney triad was made. Carney triad is a rare multiple neoplastic association of pulmonary chondroma, gastrointestinal stromal tumor, and paraganglioma. At least 2 tumors a

Chondral tumors in soft tissue are referred to as soft-tissue chondromas or extraskeletal chondromas, or as synovial chondromatosis if they arise in synovial tissue. We report the case of a 29-year-old man with synovial chondromatosis, also called synovial osteochondromatosis, which appeared in a solitary and extra-articular form. On magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and computed tomography, the central portion of the tumor showed similar characteristics to bone marrow, despite the absence of any connection to adjacent bone. T2-weighted imaging displayed marked peripheral hyperintensity consist

BACKGROUND: Two young women, each with paraganglioma and gastric stromal tumor, were encountered in the middle 1970s. One also had an adrenal cortical adenoma and the other pulmonary chondroma.
OBJECTIVE: To test the hypothesis that the combination of tumors might represent a rare syndrome, similar cases were searched for. Five additional patients with gastric stromal tumor, paraganglioma, and pulmonary chondroma were found, and all were young women. None had a family history of the tumors. The combination of the three tumors was later referred to as the Carney triad. FEATURES OF THE SYNDROME

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to document the results of arthroscopic treatment for synovial chondromatosis of the shoulder with loose body removal and partial synovectomy.
METHODS: Five cases of shoulder arthroscopy performed for synovial chondromatosis were reviewed. Removal of loose bodies and partial synovectomy was performed in all cases. Follow-up of 4 to 9 years was obtained on these 5 patients.
RESULTS: The clinical result was very good for all patients. Radiologic signs of chondroma were observed in two patients. Revision surgery was not necessary in either case.

The Carney triad is a rare syndrome of unknown aetiology, with synchronous or metachronous appearance of rare neoplasms: gastrointestinal stromal tumours (GISTs), pulmonary chondromas and extra-adrenal paragangliomas. In most cases, the Carney triad is incomplete. The combination encountered typically, GISTs and pulmonary chondromas, was also seen in our patient, a 22-year-old woman. She was diagnosed with the triad after Billroth II gastrectomy for histologically proved gastric GISTs. The diagnosis of pulmonary chondromas was confirmed by transthoracic, computed tomography-guided needle biops

BACKGROUND: Carney's triad is a rare syndrome comprising gastrointestinal stromal tumor, extra-adrenal paraganglioma, and pulmonary chondroma along with newer additions of adrenal adenoma and esophageal leiomyoma. The triad is completely manifest in only 25-30% cases, with most patients presenting with two out of three parts of the syndrome. Wild-type succinate-dehydrogenase-deficient gastric gastrointestinal stromal tumor forms the most common component of Carney's triad and is usually multicentric and multifocal. It usually demonstrates indolent behavior and resistance to imatinib; hence, th

For the last 15 years, 44 cartilaginous bone tumors had been treated in children aging from 2 to 15 years. 80% were chondromas, either isolated (27), or multiples in enchondromata (9). Treatment varied from simple biopsy to extensive excision with cancellous bone graft. Two of these patients experienced postoperative recurrence but have been cured by another surgical excision. One chondromyxoid fibroma of the big toe and 2 chondroblastomas of the femur had been treated by excision with no recurrence. Three young boys (mean age 5 years) who had a metachondromatosis with chondromas of the extrem

This report encourages clinicians to consider a diagnosis of Carney's triad in patients with multifocal gastric stromal sarcoma, extraadrenal paraganglioma (predominantly mediastinal), or pulmonary chondroma. The authors conducted a retrospective 20-year survey at the Hospital for Sick Children and identified two children with Carney's triad. One child, presenting atypically with papilledema and fundal hemorrhages from malignant hypertension and benign intracranial hypertension from chronic iron-deficiency anemia, is the second patient ever to date be described with the complete Carney's triad

Synovial chondromatosis is a well-known, well-described clinical and histopathologic entity. Occasionally, loose bodies in the knee joint can continue to grow and become large enough to impinge on joint motion. Extremely large synovial chondromata are relatively rare in the knee joint and have only been described in singular case reports in the orthopaedic literature. We describe two cases representing the spectrum of this disease process occurring in the popliteal fossa, simulating bony and/or soft tissue neoplasm. Case 1 demonstrates a large ossified chondroma, while Case 2 demonstrates a la

Carney triad is a synchronous or metachronous association of gastric gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GIST), pulmonary chondroma and extra-adrenal paraganglioma. The majority of patients have only one or two components of the triad, all three tumors being found in only about 2% of the patients at the time of the first diagnosis. The most common combination is gastric and pulmonary tumors. We report a case of Carney triad which was diagnosed at Masaryk Memorial Cancer Institute.
