Choroid plexus papilloma of the fourth ventricle.

A 14 year old girl presented with a 6 months' history of headache with vomiting, ataxia and cerebellar signs. CT and MRI revealed obstructive hydrocephalus secondary to a large fourth ventricular mass which enhanced markedly on contrast administration. Histopathology of the resected mass revealed papillary structures lined by cuboidal cells confirming choroid plexus papilloma.

Choroid plexus papillomas of the cerebellopontine angle.

The cerebellopontine angle (CPA) is a rare site for the growth of choroid plexus papilloma (CPP). The clinicoradiological diagnosis of this tumor in the CPA is difficult because of the nonspecific clinical presentation and radiological features. Five cases of choriod plexus papilloma (3 males, 2 females) operated upon at this center are reviewed. All the cases were operated upon by retromastoid suboccipital craniectomy. As they all presented with a typical CPA syndrome without any distinctive radiological feature, a clinicoradiological diagnosis of CPP could not be reached in any of these. The

Gyrate atrophy of the choroid and retina.

Gyrate atrophy of the choroid and retina is characterized by autosomal recessive inheritance, progressive chorioretinal atrophy beginning in late childhood, and hyperornithinemia with ornithinuria caused by deficient ornithine aminotransferase activity. In this paper, four patients with gyrate atrophy are described. All patients had visual impairment, mental retardation, hyperornithinemia, hypolysinemia, ornithinuria and lysinuria. The first case had hypermetropic astigmatism in contrast to other reported gyrate atrophies. These are the first reported cases from Turkey, but gyrate atrophy may

Clinical significance of fetal choroid plexus cysts.

Choroid plexus (CP) cysts are commonly detected on routine mid-trimester ultrasound scan. When associated anomalies are detected, the risk is sufficient to justify an invasive diagnostic test such as amniocentesis. However, the risk when no associated anomalies are detected is much less well defined. This information is required to determine the appropriate management in cases of apparently isolated CP cysts. We thought the only way to resolve the difficulties in counselling prospective parents was to conduct a prospective study in a large unselected population. A registry of fetal CP cysts de

[Fetal choroid plexus cysts: a real dilemma!].

The clinical significance of the fetal choroid plexus cysts, observed by prenatal sonographic examination, is now a days still discussed. A consequence of this situation is the discordance of opinions about the question of whether karyotype analysis is always necessary to evaluate chromosomal anomalies sometimes correlated, especially in the presence of (as some authors have reported) large (> 1 cm), bilateral, persistent cysts and of other structural abnormalities. We have effected a prospective study to estimate the incidence of fetal choroid plexus cysts and to establish the obstetrical beh

Choroid plexus papillomas in infancy and childhood.

The present study deals with 15 cases of choroid plexus papilloma, out of approximately 500 cases of brain tumors observed in children up to 16 years old. Several features are considered, including clinical symptoms and signs--mostly related to increased intracranial pressure--radiological diagnosis, pathology and surgical treatment, and results. Surgery may be radical in most cases, with the exception of histologically malignant papillomas. The management results are usually satisfactory. An adequate choice of surgical approach is mandatory and surgical technique should be meticulous, also in

A marker for primary choroid plexus neoplasms.

Primary choroid plexus (CP) tumors are rare neoplasms that present in childhood or, less frequently, in adult life. The majority are benign and amenable to complete surgical excision, but occasionally more invasive variants are encountered. Although generally pathologically distinct, occasionally primary CP neoplasms may be difficult to distinguish from metastatic papillary carcinomas or papillary ependymomas. Conventional cytologic markers are not sufficiently specific to permit accurate diagnosis of primary CP tumors. The authors have reported that the CP is the unique site of synthesis with

Tumors of the choroid plexus in children.

Primary neoplasms of the choroid plexus in children are surgically treatable, and the encouraging results of surgical removal, even for carcinoma, justify an aggressive surgical approach. Forty cases operated on over a span of 45 years have been reviewed in detail, including a rereading of all microscopic slides. The prognosis for children with papilloma has been excellent. The 5-year survival rate for children with carcinoma of the choroid plexus was 50%, and all deaths occurred within 7 months of operation. The patients whose carcinomas were totally removed had a better prognosis than did th

Retinal detachment associated with congenital coloboma of choroid is an unusual type of the disease 32 cases (34 eyes), or 1.23% of all 2,602 cases of retinal detachment, were operated on during 1980 to 1986. 17 (53%) patients were under 20 years of age and 28(88%) under 30 years. Preoperative visual acuities ranged from light perception to 0.2, and 25 eyes(74%) under 0.05. The associated congenital abnormalities were coloboma of iris in 32 eyes(94%), cataract in 25(74%), microcornea in 17(50%), and nystagmus in 13(38%). The detection of breaks in the rudimentary retina was extremely difficult

Choroid plexus papilloma in the posterior fossa.

Choroid plexus papillomas in the posterior fossa can present with different clinical signs and symptoms. The tumors in the patients we discuss in this article originated from different sites of the choroid plexus. One patient, who had a fourth ventricle papilloma, experienced unsteady gait and episodes of dizziness over many years. The tumor was cystic an calcified, and adherent to the brain-stem. The second patient had only signs of increased intracranial pressure. A soft tumor was located in the cerebellomedullary cistern. The third patient, with a papilloma in the cerebellopontine angle, co

Choroid plexus neoplasms. Clinicopathologic and immunohistochemical studies.

Choroid plexus neoplasms account for less than 1% of all intracranial tumors, with papillomas (CPPs) more frequent than carcinomas (CPCs). Immunocytochemical characterization of these neoplasms has been limited. Glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP), S100 protein, and keratin have been variably demonstrated by others. Ten cases were identified at two hospitals over a 25-year period; six were children and four were adults. There were seven cases of CPP and three of CPC. Extracranial metastases occurred in one case of CPC and multiple local recurrences were common. Immunohistochemical examinati

Prominent choroid plexus in meningomyelocele: sonographic findings.

Of 18 infants with meningomyelocele who were examined by cranial sonography, 17 were found to have a prominent choroid plexus, especially in the region of the glomus. In almost half of the cases this prominence assumed the configuration of a stalk arising from the glomus and terminating in a clublike ending. This prominence can be easily confused with intraventricular hemorrhage. The literature dealing with meningomyelocele and the Arnold-Chiari malformation makes no mention of this finding, but literature related to choroid plexus pathology describes similar findings in hydrocephalic infants,

The enzyme histochemistry of the choroid plexus.

Although there is some evidence that extrachoroidal sites for the production of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) are important, the choroid plexuses in the ventricles contribute the major part of CSF formation. The exact mechanism for CSF production is not fully understood. In order to study this mechanism from the enzyme histochemical standpoint, the previously reported studies are reviewed, in addition to the authors' own electron microscopic enzyme histochemical observations on this tissue. The ultrastructure and enzyme biochemistry of choroid plexus epithelial cells are considered, together with

Carcinoma of the choroid plexus. Case report.

Carcinoma of the choroid plexus is an extremely rare disease with a particularly virulent course. A case is reported in the left lateral ventricle of a young woman who is well 1 year after total excision of the tumor. The four previously reported patients with this disease who did well (two males and two females) were all children. Three of the four were treated with surgery followed by radiotherapy, and one with surgery alone. Although it appears possible that gross total removal may be curative, radiation therapy is suggested because of the distinct possibility that even the least aggressive

Cryptic vascular malformation of the choroid plexus.

A 45-year-old man and a 47-year-old woman with cryptic vascular malformations of the choroid plexus in the lateral ventricle are reported. Each patient had an intraventricular hematoma, located in the right trigone and in the anterior part of the left lateral ventricle, respectively. The vascular lesion of one patient was angiographically visualized as find abnormal vessels communicating with the right anterior choroidal artery; in the other, angiography did not reveal the lesion. In the former patient, histological examination of the excised specimen led to a diagnosis of arteriovenous malfor
