COMPLETE UNILATERAL MAXILLECTOMY IN A COHORT OF FIVE COLOMBIAN BOAS (BOA IMPERATOR).

Five unrelated adult Colombian boas (Boa imperator) presented with a 1- to 3-mon history of unilateral rostral swelling of the maxilla associated with a chronic rubbing against the enclosure's walls. Moderate to severe gingival inflammation and ulceration of the labial mucosa were present at the level of the swelling with tenderness to the touch. Radiography revealed osteolytic or proliferative lesions of the maxillary bone. Chronic maxillary osteomyelitis was diagnosed. Unilateral maxillectomy was performed on each animal under general anesthesia. Local anesthesia was also achieved by infiltr

Monitoring bacterial communities in raw milk and cheese by culture-dependent and -independent 16S rRNA gene-based analyses.

The diversity and dynamics of bacterial populations in Saint-Nectaire, a raw-milk, semihard cheese, were investigated using a dual culture-dependent and direct molecular approach combining single-strand conformation polymorphism (SSCP) fingerprinting and sequencing of 16S rRNA genes. The dominant clones, among 125 16S rRNA genes isolated from milk, belonged to members of the Firmicutes (58% of the total clones) affiliated mainly with the orders Clostridiales and the Lactobacillales, followed by the phyla Proteobacteria (21.6%), Actinobacteria (16.8%), and Bacteroidetes (4%). Sequencing the 16S

Characteristics of nosocomial bacterial meningitis in children.

Nosocomial meningitis is uncommon in children. We reviewed the medical records of all children who developed bacterial meningitis at least 72 hours after admission to Mackay Memorial Hospital for the period July 1992 through June 2000. Clinical manifestations, predisposing factors, pathogens, and outcomes were analyzed. Twenty-two cases of nosocomial meningitis were identified, comprising 9.2% (22/239) of all pediatric cases of bacterial meningitis during the study period. The male-to-female ratio was 14:8. All patients were younger than 6 months of age except for one, who was 7 years old. The

Pediatric brucellosis with negative serology: Molecular confirmation and implications for epidemiological surveillance in Mexico.

Brucellosis is an endemic zoonosis. Diagnosis is challenging in children due to nonspecific symptoms and low early sensitivity of serological tests. We describe a 3-year-old male patient with prolonged fever, thrombocytopenia, and seizures. Serological tests performed for brucellosis by the national reference laboratory, which are recommended by the Manual of Standardized Procedures for Epidemiological Surveillance in Mexico, were negative. Negative serological results may be due to the early course of infection and the technical sensitivity limitations of routine tests used for standard surve

Uncovering the hidden bacterial ghost communities of yeast and experimental evidences demonstrates yeast as thriving hub for bacteria.

Our major concern was to address "yeast endobacteria" which was based on a few reports in the recent past where bacteria may find yeast as a niche for survival. In this study, we report the microbiota of twenty-nine axenic yeast cultures recovered from different habitats based on their 16S rRNA gene-amplicon metagenomes. Yeasts were identified based on D1/D2 or ITS gene sequences. Bacterial diversity was widespread, varied and rich among all yeasts except for four strains. Taxa belonging to the phylum Firmicutes, Proteobacteria, Actinobacteria and Bacteroidetes and the genera; Streptococcus, P

Multidrug Resistance in Quinolone-Resistant Gram-Negative Bacteria Isolated from Hospital Effluent and the Municipal Wastewater Treatment Plant.

This study is aimed to assess if hospital effluents represent an important supplier of multidrug-resistant (MDR) Gram-negative bacteria that, being discharged in the municipal collector, may be disseminated in the environment and bypassed in water quality control systems. From a set of 101 non-Escherichia coli Gram-negative bacteria with reduced susceptibility to quinolones, was selected a group of isolates comprised by those with the highest indices of MDR (defined as nonsusceptibility to at least one agent in six or more antimicrobial categories, MDR ≥6) or resistance to meropenem or ceftazi

Coupled sulfur and electrode-driven autotrophic denitrification for significantly enhanced nitrate removal.

Elemental sulfur (S0)-based autotrophic denitrification (SAD) has gained intensive attention in the treatment of secondary effluent for its low cost, high efficiency, and good stability. However, in practice, the supplementary addition of limestone is necessary to balance the alkalinity consumption during SAD operation, which increases water hardness and reduces the effective reaction volume. In this study, a coupled sulfur and electrode-driven autotrophic denitrification (SEAD) process was proposed with superior nitrate removal performance, less accumulation of sulfate, and self-balance of ac

[Uncommon non-fermenting Gram-negative rods as pathogens of lower respiratory tract infection].

INTRODUCTION: Glucose non-fermenting Gram-negative bacteria are ubiquitous environmental organisms. Most of them are identified as opportunistic, nosocomial pathogens in patients. Uncommon species are identified accurately, mainly due to the introduction of matrix-assisted laser desorption-ionization time of flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF MS) in clinical microbiology practice. Most of these uncommon non-fermenting rods are isolated from lower respiratory tract samples. Their significance in lower respiratory tract infections, such as rules of their testing are not clarified yet. AIM: The

Genome-Based Analysis of Chromosomal Colistin Non-Susceptibility in Stenotrophomonas pavanii Isolated from the Phycosphere of Pectinodesmus pectinatus.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Freshwater microalgae-bacteria consortia are increasingly utilized in wastewater treatment and biomass production. However, bacteria associated with the algal phycosphere may act as environmental reservoirs of multidrug-resistant (MDR) phenotypes and antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs), including resistance to last-resort antibiotics such as colistin. METHODS: An axenic culture of the freshwater microalga Pectinodesmus pectinatus was established using a NaClO-based cleaning protocol. Three phycosphere-associated bacterial strains (Chryseobacterium sp., Pseudomonas montei

Dynamic shifts in cutaneous bacterial and fungal communities throughout human aging: a pilot study.

BACKGROUND: The skin microbiome plays an important role in aging, yet most aging biomarkers predominantly focus on gut bacteria, overlooking the skin microbial communities, especially its fungal component. OBJECTIVES: To comprehensively profile the skin bacterial and fungal microbiome across age, sex, and anatomical sites (sun-exposed forehead vs. non-sun-exposed back) and develop an integrated microbial model for age prediction. METHODS: A total of 160 skin swabs from 80 healthy individuals stratified into four age groups (centered at 10, 30, 50, 70 years) were conducted by DNA sequencing f

Construction of an ideotype root system architecture of subsurface flow constructed wetland macrophytes by vertical spatial stress: strengthening of rhizosphere effects and determination of appropriate substrate depth.

Strengthening rhizosphere effects to enhance pollutant removal is a hotspot of constructed wetlands (CWs) research in recent years, and improving the root traits and metabolic capacity of macrophytes is crucial for strengthening rhizosphere effects. In the field experiment, two types of subsurface flow (SSF) CWs (CW10 and CW20, with substrate depths of 10 and 20 cm, respectively) under the vertical spatial stress of roots (VSSR) and two types of non-VSSR SSF CWs (CW40 and CW60) were adopted with Typha orientalis as cultivated plants to investigate the variability of root development, metabolis

Metagenomic Analysis Reveals Variations in Gut Microbiomes of the Schistosoma mansoni-Transmitting Snails Biomphalaria straminea and Biomphalaria glabrata.

Biomphalaria snails play a crucial role in the transmission of the human blood fluke Schistosoma mansoni. The gut microbiota of intermediate hosts is known to influence their physiological functions, but little is known about its composition and role in Biomphalaria snails. To gain insights into the biological characteristics of these freshwater intermediate hosts, we conducted metagenomic sequencing on Biomphalaria straminea and B. glabrata to investigate variations in their gut microbiota. This study revealed that the dominant members of the gut microbiota in B. glabrata belong to the phyla

Cervico-vaginal microbiota and antimicrobial resistance patterns in relation to different reproductive statuses in cattle: a field study from Nepal.

Vaginal bacterial communities are increasingly recognized as key determinants of fertility in cattle. This study explored bacterial communities in the cervico-vaginal mucus of healthy heifers, cows with cervicitis, repeat-breeding, and cows within the 35-day postpartum period using the microbiological culture method (n=35) and sequencing of the V3-V4 hypervariable regions of 16S rRNA gene (n=18), along with antimicrobial susceptibility testing. Micrococcus spp. and Enterobacter spp. were the top two bacteria isolated across the groups. Alarmingly, antimicrobial sensitivity tests revealed a hig

Temperature-dependent changes in the dynamics and diversity of specific spoilage organisms in mackerel and trout fillets: a MALDI-TOF MS-based study.

Specific spoilage organisms (SSOs) are major contributors to the deterioration of fishery products and variations in their composition during fish storage deserve further investigation. In this study, we analysed the evolution of SSOs in fillets of Atlantic mackerel and rainbow trout during prolonged storage at 0 and 4 °C. SSOs were quantified and growth data were modelled to predict the shelf life of fillets, defined as the time to reach 6 log10 CFU/g for SSOs. Changes in the abundance of genera of SSOs were investigated using a culturomic approach, which involved the identification of coloni

Elizabethkingia miricola as an opportunistic oral pathogen associated with superinfectious complications in humoral immunodeficiency: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Elizabethkingia miricola is a rare Gram-negative bacterium found in water and clinical specimens. Typical culturing methods often misidentify Elizabethkingia spp. as Flavobacterium or Chryseobacterium. Although diagnosis is based on culturing samples taken from sterile sites, such as blood, a proper identification of this bacterium requires an expertise that goes beyond the capabilities of a typical clinical laboratory. CASE PRESENTATION: A 35-year-old woman diagnosed with common variable immunodeficiency was admitted to our center. Previous treatment with antibiotics (amoxicillin

Profiling and source tracking of the microbial populations and resistome present in fish products.

Microorganisms in processing environments significantly impact the quality and safety of food products and can serve as potential reservoirs for antibiotic-resistant genes, contributing to public health concerns about antimicrobial resistance (AMR). Fish processing plants represent an understudied environment for microbiome mapping. This study investigated the microbial composition, prevalence of Listeria spp., and resistome structures in three catfish processing facilities in the southeastern United States. The 16S rRNA gene sequencing revealed that the observed richness and Shannon diversity

A review of the Royal Perth Hospital Bali experience: an infection control perspective.

Thirty five patients were transferred to Royal Perth Hospital (RPH) after the Bali bombings. The patients had severe burn injuries and were considered to be at high-risk of both the carriage and acquisition of multi-resistant organisms (MROs). Whilst seeking to protect the Bali patients with a comprehensive infection control response, we also sought to protect other high-risk patients from nosocomial acquisition of MROs. MROs were detected from 25 (82%) of the 29 Bali patients admitted to RPH. Bali patients were colonised, or infected, with one or more of the following MROs: multi-resistant Ac
