On the origin of susceptibility to kinetotic swimming behaviour in fish: a parabolic aircraft flight study.

Humans taking part in parabolic aircraft flights (PAFs) may suffer from motion sickness (SMS, a kinetosis; it comprises a dynamic and a static component). It has been argued that the so-called static variety of SMS during PAFs might be based on asymmetric statoliths (i.e., differently weighed statoliths on the right and the left side of the head), with asymmetric inputs to the brain being disclosed in microgravity. Since it has been repeatedly shown earlier that some fish of a given batch reveal a kinetotic behaviour during PAFs (especially so-called spinning movements and looping responses),

Effects of Cypermethrin on Opercular movements, Oxygen Consumption and Histopathology of Gills in Oreochromis niloticus (Linnaeus 1758).

Cypermethrin, a synthetic pyrethroid, has been found to contaminate water bodies adjacent to agricultural lands and is reported to be moderately toxic to the organisms living therein. This study examined the effects of cypermethrin on respiratory biomarkers in Oreochromis niloticus at four sub-lethal concentrations, including a control (0.0, 0.3, 0.6, and 1.0 µg/L) over 96 h. The actual concentrations were analytically confirmed through GC-ECD, with an average recovery rate of 93±0.21%. Cypermethrin-exposed O. niloticus showed higher mean opercular movement rates and oxygen consumption than th

Development and application of IgT monoclonal antibody in Nile tilapia Oreochromis niloticus.

Immunoglobulin T (IgT) is a class of Ig unique to teleost, with current research largely supporting its role in mucosal immunity. However, the precise function of IgT in many kinds of teleost remains poorly understood due to a lack of appropriate antibody tools. In this study, we prepared the recombinant protein of Oreochromis niloticus IgT heavy chain (rOn-IgT) and generated a monoclonal antibody (mAb). Through enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) and flow cytometry screening, the 1B3H4 hybridoma was identified as producing an IgG1-type antibody, which can recognize IgT and identify IgT

Transmission of Spring Viraemia of Carp Virus Between Common Carp and Nile Tilapia by Cohabitation.

The purpose of the current study was to investigate the possible transmission of spring viraemia of carp virus (SVCV) between common carp (Cyprinus carpio) and Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) through cohabitating infected fish of one species with healthy fish of the counter species. The ability of infected O. niloticus to transmit the infection to nearby C. carpio for an extended period was also evaluated. The cohabitation ratio was one SVCV-challenged fish of one species to three healthy fish of the other species. Epithelioma Papulosum Cyprini cell line was utilised for virus isolation,

Revealing Metabolic Dysregulation Induced by Polypropylene Nano- and Microplastics in Nile Tilapia via Noninvasive Probing Epidermal Mucus.

A noninvasive sampling technology was conceived, employing a disposable acupuncture needle in conjunction with high-resolution mass spectrometry (termed as noninvasive direct sampling extractive electrospray ionization mass spectrometry, NIDS-EESI-MS) to scrutinize the epidermal mucus of Nile tilapia for insights into the metabolic dysregulation induced by polypropylene nano- and microplastics. This analytical method initiates with the dispensing of an extraction solvent onto the needles coated with the mucus sample, almost simultaneously applying a high voltage to generate analyte ions. Transcriptome analysis reveals the neuroactive receptor genes response to Streptococcus agalactiae infection in tilapia, Oreochromis niloticus.

The detailed crosstalk between the neuroendocrine and immune systems in Oreochromis niloticus, an economically important fish, in response to pathogenic infections, remains unclear. This study revealed the head kidney transcriptional profiles of O. niloticus upon infections with Streptococcus agalactiae, a prevalent pathogen known to cause severe meningitis. Twelve cDNA libraries of O. niloticus head kidney, representing four treatment time points (0, 6, 24, and 48 h), were constructed and a total of 2,528 differentially expressed genes were identified based on pairwise comparisons. Synergistic infection of Edwardsiella ictaluri and Flavobacterium oreochromis in cage cultured tilapia (Oreochromis sp.).

Widespread distribution of a highly pathogenic Edwardsiella ictaluri strain in farmed tilapia in northern Vietnam has recently been reported. The subsequent investigation noticed a disease outbreak occurred at five nearby tilapia farms with floating cages, in which the clinical signs of both edwardsiellosis and columnaris diseases were observed on the same infected fish and caused 65% to 85% fish mortality. Naturally diseased fish (n = 109) were sampled from the five infected farms for bacterial identification and conducting challenge tests. The two bacteria Edwardsiella ictaluri and Flavobact

Tilapia, a good model for studying reproductive endocrinology.

The Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus), with a system of XX/XY sex determination, is a worldwide farmed fish with a shorter sexual maturation time than that of most cultured fish. Tilapia show a spawning cycle of approximately 14 days and can be artificially propagated in the laboratory all year round to obtain genetically all female (XX) and all male (XY) fry. Its genome sequence has been opened, and a perfect gene editing platform has been established. With a moderate body size, it is convenient for taking enough blood to measure hormone level. In recent years, using tilapia as animal mode

Alternative splicing of histone demethylase Kdm6bb mediates temperature-induced sex reversal in the Nile tilapia.

Sex determination in many fish species is remarkably plastic and temperature sensitive. Nile tilapia display a genetic sex-determination system (XX/XY). However, high-temperature treatment during critical thermosensitive periods can induce XX females into XXm pseudo-males, and this phenomenon is termed temperature-induced sex reversal (TISR). To investigate the molecular mechanism of TISR in Nile tilapia, we performed Iso-seq analysis and found a dramatic effect of high temperature on gene alternative splicing (AS). Kdm6bb histone demethylase showed a novel AS at intron 5 that generates Kdm6bb

Gata2a Mutation Causes Progressive Microphthalmia and Blindness in Nile Tilapia.

The normal development of lens fiber cells plays a critical role in lens morphogenesis and maintaining transparency. Factors involved in the development of lens fiber cells are largely unknown in vertebrates. In this study, we reported that GATA2 is essential for lens morphogenesis in Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus). In this study, Gata2a was detected in the primary and secondary lens fiber cells, with the highest expression in primary fiber cells. gata2a homozygous mutants of tilapia were obtained using CRISPR/Cas9. Different from fetal lethality caused by Gata2/gata2a mutation in mice a

Behavioural and physiological effects of methadone in the perioperative period on the Nile tilapia Oreochromis niloticus.

Through the analysis of behavioural changes, this study demonstrates that methadone has behavioural, but not analgesic, effects on Oreochromis niloticus. It provides information that suggests the drug has sedative abilities, as the recovery time was shorter in the fish receiving methadone. Future research, with different doses and stimuli, is required to provide more information about analgesia.

Study of tensiometric properties, microbiological and collagen content in nile tilapia skin submitted to different sterilization methods.

Tissue bioengineering development is a global concern and different materials are studied and created to be safe, effective and with low cost. Nile Tilapia skin had shown its biological potential as covers for the burn wound. This study evaluates the tilapia skin histological, collagen properties and tensiometric resistance, after treatment by different sterilization methods. Tilapia skin samples were submitted to two sterilization processes: (1) chemical, which consisted in two 2% chlorhexidin baths, followed by sequential baths in increasing glycerol concentrations; and (2) radiation, when g

Impact of diesel oil effluent in the mucosal surface of the alimentary canal of Oreochromis nilotica (Linnaeus): a scanning electron microscopic study.

Adverse effects of diesel oil on microanatomical structure of the alimentary canal of O. nilotica were studied using SEM observations. The study revealed irregular arrangement of the stratified epithelial cells along with fragmentation of the normal concentric pattem of microridges of the same cells in buccopharynx and oesophagus. The excessive secretion of mucus of buccopharynx and oesophagus were the salient changes caused by diesel oil pollution. The destruction and degeneration of the mucosal folds of stomach and intestine along with their epithelial cells exhibited a concrete hyperactivit

Species delimitation of Gyrodactylus (Monogenea: Gyrodactylidae) infecting the southernmost cyprinids (Actinopterygii: Cyprinidae) in the New World.

The genus Gyrodactylus von Nordmann, 1832 represents one of the most diverse and widespread taxa within Monogenea, with approximately 500 species described worldwide. Thirty-three species of Gyrodactylus have been recorded in Mexico, and in the last two decades, at least 26 new species have been described mainly from freshwater fish families such as poeciliids, goodeids, profundulids, characids, and cichlids. In this study, we describe two new species of Gyrodactylus infecting freshwater cyprinids based on morphological and molecular characteristics. Gyrodactylus ticuchi n. sp. and Gyrodactylu

Early-life manipulation of cortisol and its receptor alters stress axis programming and social competence.

In many vertebrate species, early social experience generates long-term effects on later life social behaviour. These effects are accompanied by persistent modifications in the expression of genes implicated in the stress axis. It is unknown, however, whether stress axis programming can affect the development of social competence, and if so, by which mechanism(s). Here, we used pharmacological manipulations to persistently reprogramme the hypothalamic-pituitary-interrenal axis of juvenile cooperatively breeding cichlids, Neolamprologus pulcher. During the first two months of life, juveniles we
