Tobacco abuse and its treatment. Turning old and new issues into opportunities for the occupational health nurse.

1. Tobacco use is linked to excessive rates of cardiovascular disease, lung disease, and many fatal neoplasms. In the United States it is the number one cause of illness and premature death. Cigarettes and other combusted forms of tobacco generate environmental tobacco smoke, a major contributor to asthma attacks, heart attacks, and lung cancer among nonsmokers. 2. Cigarettes are the most prevalent and abused form of tobacco, but other forms, such as cigars and smokeless tobacco, also contain nicotine and may cause dependency in high risk groups that consume these products. 3. The addictivenes

"I got a little addiction": Adolescent and young adult cigarillo users' self-perceptions of addiction.

BACKGROUND: While prior research has informed how cigarette smokers understand and apply the term addiction, little is known about how this term is used by cigarillo smokers. This is an important area of study given the decline in cigarette use and increase in cigar product consumption. PURPOSE/OBJECTIVES: This paper examines how cigarillo smokers self-identify in terms of addiction and the association of this identification with tobacco use, quitting experiences, and level of nicotine dependence. METHODS: Transcripts from semi-structured interviews conducted in 2015-2016 with 57 participant

Use of Tobacco Products, Alcohol, and Other Substances Among High School Students During the COVID-19 Pandemic - Adolescent Behaviors and Experiences Survey, United States, January-June 2021.

The COVID-19 pandemic has been associated with established risk factors for adolescent substance use, including social isolation, boredom, grief, trauma, and stress. However, little is known about adolescent substance use patterns during the pandemic. CDC analyzed data from the Adolescent Behaviors and Experiences Survey, an online survey of a probability-based, nationally representative sample of public- and private-school students in grades 9-12 (N = 7,705), to examine the prevalence of current use of tobacco products, alcohol, and other substances among U.S. high school students. Prevalence

Associations of race and ethnicity with tobacco messaging exposures and tobacco use among bisexual and pansexual women.

Within the lesbian and bisexual community, bisexual women have the highest prevalence of tobacco use, and Black and Latina women are much more likely to use tobacco than their heterosexual peers. Research on tobacco use among bisexual women is limited to descriptions of prevalence in this population. We evaluated associations between race/ethnicity, exposure to pro- and anti-tobacco messages, and tobacco use outcomes among bisexual and pansexual women. We recruited a sample of N = 382 bisexual and pansexual women in the United States using the online survey platform, Prolific. Participants rep

Tobacco use and the interplay of internalizing, externalizing and substance use problems: A latent class analysis of data from the Population Assessment of Tobacco and Health Study.

BACKGROUND: Cigarette smoking is disproportionately high among adults with two or more psychiatric disorders (psychiatric comorbidities), yet research on non-cigarette tobacco use among this population is scant. Additionally, most studies on tobacco use this among this population rely on psychiatric diagnoses rather than individual symptoms, potentially excluding individuals with symptom-specific issues that increase their risk for tobacco use but do not meet the criteria for diagnosis. The objectives of this study were to identify unique classes of individuals based on symptoms of psychiatric

"Nicotine initiation products in Germany: Findings from a representative survey of individuals aged 14 years and older who had ever used nicotine-containing products".

INTRODUCTION: Smoking prevalence in Germany has remained high in recent years, with around 30 % of the population smoking. Related nicotine products, such as e-cigarettes, are increasingly popular, especially among youth. Unlike previous generations, for whom nicotine use typically began with traditional cigarettes, initiation pathways may now increasingly involve these related nicotine products. METHODS: Data from 1,164 participants aged 14 years and older were collected between August and September 2022 through the DEBRA study (German Study on Tobacco Use), using computer-assisted household

Mapping indicators of tobacco and related product use: Unveiling challenges and variations in the Eurobarometer surveys over three decades.

INTRODUCTION: The European Commission's Special Eurobarometer surveys on tobacco are widely used as comparable and representative data across the European Union for monitoring consumption patterns. Despite their broad use, certain challenges persist, including inconsistencies in survey timelines and variations in the collected information across waves. This study aims to identify available tobacco and related product indicators, and assess their temporal comparability, to support researchers to better understand the potential uses of these data and their alignment with other sources. METHODS:

Non-cigarette Tobacco Use and Stroke Among West Africans: Evidence From the SIREN Study.

INTRODUCTION: Non-cigarette tobacco (NCT) represents a form of tobacco use with a misperceived significance in chronic disease events. Whether NCT use is sufficient to promote stroke events, especially among Africans, is yet to be understood. This study assessed the relationship between NCT use and stroke among indigenous Africans. METHODS: A total of 7617 respondents (NCT users: 41 vs. non-NCT: 7576) from the Stroke Investigative Research and Educational Network (SIREN) study were included in the current analysis. NCT use was defined as self-reported use of smoked (cigars or piper) or smokel

Socio-Economic Evolution and Tobacco Products Sales in Spain: A Long-Term Analysis of the Tobacco Kuznets Curve.

This article examines the relationship between economic development and tobacco consumption in Spain, using the Kuznets Curve framework. Drawing on panel data from Spanish provinces (2002-2021), the findings confirm that GDP has a non-linear effect on cigarette consumption. A 1% increase in GDP initially is positively associated with an increase in cigarette sales by 2.31%, but at higher income levels, cigarettes sales decrease (-0.24%), reflecting changing consumption dynamics as economies develop, which corroborates the existence of the Tobacco Kuznets Curve (TKC). Beyond GDP, we examine the

Efficacy of a Brief Tobacco Intervention for Tobacco and Nicotine Containing Product Use in the US Air Force.

INTRODUCTION: While effective Brief Tobacco Interventions (BTIs) are available for cigarette smoking and smokeless tobacco, given the changing prevalence of tobacco and nicotine containing products (TNCPs), there is a need for interventions targeting a broader range of TNCPs (eg, cigarettes, smokeless tobacco, electronic cigarettes, and hookah). The purpose of the current investigation was to evaluate the efficacy of a BTI, a 40-minute intervention designed to intervene on four TNCPs in a sample of US military personnel during an 11-week period of involuntary tobacco abstinence, for reducing i

A systematic literature review of tobacco use among adults 15 years and older in sub-Saharan Africa.

BACKGROUND: Given that developing countries (and particularly women in these countries) are at increasing risk for tobacco use, the need for hard data to accurately monitor tobacco use in developing countries is needed. The purpose of this review is to synthesize the available prevalence data on current tobacco use among adults in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA). METHODS: Several databases were systematically searched for articles published in peer-reviewed journals at any time during the last century to mid-2005. The search resulted in the retrieval of 54 articles in which the current use of tobacc

Cognitive testing of tobacco use items for administration to patients with cancer and cancer survivors in clinical research.

BACKGROUND: To the authors' knowledge, there are currently no standardized measures of tobacco use and secondhand smoke exposure in patients diagnosed with cancer, and this gap hinders the conduct of studies examining the impact of tobacco on cancer treatment outcomes. The objective of the current study was to evaluate and refine questionnaire items proposed by an expert task force to assess tobacco use. METHODS: Trained interviewers conducted cognitive testing with cancer patients aged ≥21 years with a history of tobacco use and a cancer diagnosis of any stage and organ site who were recruit

Flexible Bronchoscopic En Bloc Cryoextraction of Endobronchial Leiomyoma Using a 1.7-mm Cryoprobe: A Case Report with One-Year Follow-Up.

Background and Clinical Significance: Endobronchial leiomyoma is a rare benign tumor of the respiratory tract, accounting for less than 2% of all benign pulmonary neoplasms. Most cases have been treated surgically or with endoscopic modalities such as laser or rigid bronchoscopy-assisted cryotherapy. Flexible bronchoscopic cryoextraction has been rarely reported, typically with 2.2-mm probes. Small-caliber cryoprobes (1.1- and 1.7-mm) have been validated for diagnostic transbronchial cryobiopsy but not for therapeutic removal of leiomyoma. We report a case of complete removal of endobronchial

The Role of Cigarillo Flavor in the Co-Use of Cigarillos and Cannabis among Young Adults.

Background: Research suggests flavor facilitates cigarillo use, but it is unknown if flavor impacts patterns of co-use of cigarillos and cannabis ("co-use"), which is common among young adult smokers. This study's aim was to determine the role of the cigarillo flavor in co-use among young adults. Methods: Data were collected (2020-2021) in a cross-sectional online survey administered to young adults who smoked ≥2 cigarillos/week (N = 361), recruited from 15 urban areas in the United States. A structural equation model was used to assess the relationship between flavored cigarillo use and past
