Identification of Differential Compositions of Aqueous Extracts of Cinnamomi Ramulus and Cinnamomi Cortex.

Cinnamomi ramulus (CR) and Cinnamomi cortex (CC), both sourced from Cinnamomum cassia Presl, are commonly used Chinese medicines in the Chinese Pharmacopeia. However, while CR functions to dissipate cold and to resolve external problems of the body, CC functions to warm the internal organs. To clarify the material basis of these different functions and clinical effects, a simple and reliable UPLC-Orbitrap-Exploris-120-MS/MS method combined with multivariate statistical analyses was established in this study with the aim of exploring the difference in chemical compositions of aqueous extracts o

In vitro efficacy of essential oils against various Candida species.

Candida species are responsible for the most common fungal infections worldwide. We studied the in vitro antifungal activity of a large panel of essential oils (EOs) against various Candida species. The EOs activity against Candida spp. was tested using a gradient microdilution assay ranging from 4% to 0.008% (v/v). After a preliminary screening including 31 EOs, seven selected EOs were tested against 13 clinical isolates and four reference strains belonging to six Candida species. Cinnamomum zeylanicum and Cymbopogon giganteus EOs exhibited the best antifungal activity against all clinical an

In vitro effects of cinnamon, oregano, and thyme essential oils against Escherichia coli and Trueperella pyogenes isolated from dairy cows with clinical endometritis.

Clinical endometritis causes serious economic losses in dairy farms, mainly due to its negative health impact on fertility and milk production, as well as the additional costs of medicines used to treat the affected animals. The therapy for uterine diseases is principally performed with antibiotic treatment; however, its indiscriminate use in dairy herds can favor the increase in the resistance of pathogenic bacteria, leading to treatment failures. In this regard, the use of unconventional treatment may be a good option to reduce the use of antimicrobials in milk production. The objective of t

Proteomics-Driven Molecular Mechanism of Cinnamaldehyde against Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus aureus Infection: Covalent Modifications of Sortase A and Aconitase.

Cinnamaldehyde (CA) from Cinnamomum cassia shows strong antimicrobial activity against MRSA. This study used proteomics and high-resolution mass spectrometry with an MRSA-infected cell model to explore CA's antimicrobial mechanisms. CA covalently modifies Sortase A's active site cysteine (Cys184), a key enzyme for anchoring virulence factors to the MRSA cell wall. This modification inhibits Sortase A's activity, blocking virulence factor anchoring and impairing MRSA's adhesion, infection, and immune evasion. CA also covalently modifies Aconitase's [4Fe-4S] cluster active sites (Cys509, Cys512)

Plant Distillates Suppress Lampenflora in Karst Caves: Insights From In Situ Experiments and Microbial Community Analyses.

Lampenflora (cyanobacteria, algae, mosses) threaten karst caves by accelerating bioweathering and damaging speleothems. Conventional control methods are often environmentally harmful or unsustainable. This study evaluated plant distillates from Artemisia argyi (AA), Cinnamomum cassia (CC) and Mentha canadensis (MC) for inhibiting lampenflora in Zhijin Cave, China. In situ plot experiments over 30 days showed that all treatments significantly reduced pigmentation and biomass. Physiological assays indicated declines in chlorophyll a, chlorophyll b, carotenoids and catalase activity. Microbial co

Absolute Antioxidant Activity of Five Phenol-Rich Essential Oils.

Essential oils (EOs) have promising antioxidant activities which are gaining interest as natural alternatives to synthetic antioxidants in the food and cosmetic industries. However, quantitative data on chain-breaking activity and on the kinetics of peroxyl radical trapping are missing. Five phenol-rich EOs were analyzed by GC-MS and studied by oxygen-uptake kinetics in inhibited controlled autoxidations of reference substrates (cumene and squalene). Terpene-rich Thymus vulgaris (thymol 4%; carvacrol 33.9%), Origanum vulgare, (thymol 0.4%; carvacrol 66.2%) and Satureja hortensis, (thymol 1.7%;
