Living on the Edges: Spatial Niche Occupation of Asian Citrus Psyllid, Diaphorina citri Kuwayama (Hemiptera: Liviidae), in Citrus Groves.

The spatial niche occupation of the Asian citrus psyllid, Diaphorina citri Kuwayama, 1908, was evaluated to determine its field colonization and food resource exploitation strategies in citrus groves. Mature grapefruit and sweet orange groves were surveyed as part of an area-wide program in 2009-2010 to determine D. citri population densities and between-tree distribution. In both cultivars, significantly more psyllids were found on perimeter trees throughout the study period suggesting a strong edge effect in D. citri distribution in the groves. D. citri densities and infestation levels gradu

[Ileus due to oranges in Meckel's diverticulum].

BACKGROUND: A Meckel's diverticulum is a remnant of the primitive bowel and the yolk sac which occurs in 1-5% of the population. It causes problems in only very few people. CASE DESCRIPTION: A 39-year-old man developed acute abdominal pain after eating two oranges. The cause of the pain was found during a lower abdominal laparotomy - the small bowel was obstructed by a Meckel's diverticulum and a phytobezoar composed of orange fibres. Both were removed surgically. CONCLUSION: A symptomatic Meckel's diverticulum should be removed; however, in an asymptomatic Meckel's diverticulum this approac

Effective removal and recovery of antimony using metal-loaded saponified orange waste.

Zr(IV) and Fe(III) ions were loaded onto an orange waste precursor to prepare a metal-loaded orange waste gel, which was investigated for the adsorptive removal and recovery of antimony (III and V) from an aqueous environment. The loading capacity of the orange waste for Zr(IV) and Fe(III) was found to be 1.40 and 1.87 mmol/g, respectively. The maximum batch mode sorption capacity of the Zr(III)-loaded saponified orange waste (SOW) gel was found to be 0.94 mmol/g for Sb(III) and 1.19 mmol/g for Sb(V). A nearly similar result was found for the Fe(III)-loaded SOW gel with the sorption capacity f

Sweet Orange Juice Processing By-Product Extracts: A Caries Management Alternative to Chlorhexidine.

Dental caries is one of the most prevalent chronic diseases globally in both children and adults. This study investigated the potential of industrial sweet orange waste extracts (ISOWE) as a substitute for chlorhexidine (CHX) in managing dental caries. First, the cytotoxicity of ISOWE (40, 80, 120 mg/mL) and CHX (0.1 and 0.2%) on buccal epithelial cells was determined. ISOWE exhibited no overall toxicity, whereas CHX strongly affected cell viability. The combination of ISOWE and CHX significantly enhanced cell proliferation compared to CHX alone. Next, the antimicrobial efficacy of ISOWE, CHX,

Use of honey bees (Apis mellifera L.) to detect the presence of Mediterranean fruit fly (Ceratitis capitata Wiedemann) larvae in Valencia oranges.

BACKGROUND: When fruit deteriorates a characteristic profile of volatile chemicals is produced that is different from that produced by healthy fruits. The identification of such chemicals allows the possibility of monitoring the fruit for early signs of deterioration with biological sensors. The use of honey bees and other insects as biological sensors is well known. This study aimed to identify the volatiles produced by oranges infested with larvae of the Mediterranean fruit fly and to test the ability of honey bees, conditioned to this volatile chemical profile, to detect such oranges. Green synthesis of capped gold nanoparticles and their effect on Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria.

AIM: We report synthesis of capped gold nanoparticles (C-AuNPs) of ≈20-30 nm by reducing HAuCl4 with flower and leaf extracts of Ocimum tenuiflorum, leaves of Azadirachta indica and Mentha spicata and peel of Citrus sinensis plants. METHODS: Atomic force microscopy (AFM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) determined their size, shape and topographical structures. The C-AuNPs with UV-Vis spectrophotometer produced a maximum absorption within 530-535 nm wavelengths. Their Fourier transform IR stretching frequencies, from 450 to 4000 cm-1, have inferred HAuCl4 reduction to Au. RESULTS:

New insights into the role of biochar and Cu-biochar in enhanced degradation of sulfonamides by ferrate: Involvements of electron transfer and hydroxyl radical oxidation pathways.

In this study, orange peel and tea waste were successfully prepared into orange peel biochar (OBC) and tea waste biochar (TBC). OBC, TBC, and conventional corn straw biochar (CBC) were employed to facilitate the oxidative degradation of sulfamethoxazole (SMX) with ferrate (Fe(VI)) under neutral conditions (pH 7.0). The degradation of SMX was enhanced with the increase of the preparation temperature (400-600 °C) of OBC and TBC. The pyridine N on OBC and TBC dominated the enhancing degradation of SMX by Fe(VI) through an electron transfer pathway. OBC prepared at 600 °C (OBC600) was further modi

Bioinspired Synthesis of Magnetic Nanoparticles Based on Iron Oxides Using Orange Waste and Their Application as Photo-Activated Antibacterial Agents.

Magnetic nanoparticles based on iron oxides (MNPs-Fe) have been proposed as photothermal agents (PTAs) within antibacterial photothermal therapy (PTT), aiming to counteract the vast health problem of multidrug-resistant bacterial infections. We present a quick and easy green synthesis (GS) to prepare MNPs-Fe harnessing waste. Orange peel extract (organic compounds) was used as a reducing, capping, and stabilizing agent in the GS, which employed microwave (MW) irradiation to reduce the synthesis time. The produced weight, physical-chemical features and magnetic features of the MNPs-Fe were stud

Carbonization of citrus-derived flavonoids exhibits enhanced anti-coronavirus infection in vitro and in vivo.

Orange peel waste from juice processing has long been an environmental challenge. The abundant bioactive flavonoids, such as hesperidin and naringin, within the peel waste have attracted significant scientific interest. However, the low biocompatibility and the requirement for high effective concentrations to exert bioactivities hinder the capability and utility of these citrus-derived flavonoids. This study aimed to transform orange waste into a high-value product by enhancing the antiviral activity against coronavirus infection. The coronavirus pandemic, caused by SARS-CoV-2, has had a devas

Optimization of sampling and monitoring of vegetative flushing in citrus orchards.

Citrus trees produce flushes throughout the year, but there are no criteria established for a precise shoot monitoring in orchards under tropical climate. Methods for quantification of flush dynamics would be useful for horticultural and pest management studies because different insect vectors feed and reproduce on flushes. We estimated the minimum number and distribution of trees for sampling and determined the flushing pattern over time in 'Valencia Late' orange trees grafted onto 'Swingle' citrumelo rootstock. Shoots within a square frame (0.25 m2) on two sides of the canopy were counted an

Effect of orange and apple juices on iron absorption in children.

OBJECTIVE: To measure iron absorption in children from meals containing apple juice or orange juice so as to determine if iron absorption will be greater with orange juice because of its higher ascorbic acid content than apple juice, a noncitrus fruit juice that US children reportedly prefer. DESIGN: On 2 successive days, children consumed identical meals that included apple juice on one day and orange juice on the other, in random order. The meals were labeled with iron-57 on one day and iron-58 on the other. Iron absorption was measured from red blood cell incorporation of the iron stable i

Responses of the Asian citrus psyllid to volatiles emitted by the flushing shoots of its rutaceous host plants.

Diaphorina citri Kuwayama (Hemiptera: Psyllidae) carries Candidatus liberibacter spp., the putative causal agents of Huanglongbing. D. citri reproduces and develops only on the flushing shoots of its rutaceous host plants. Here we examined whether D. citri is attracted to host plant odors and a mixture of synthetic terpenes. Tests conducted in a vertically oriented Y-tube olfactometer showed that both males and females preferentially entered the Y-tube arm containing the odor from the young shoots of Murraya paniculata (L.) Jack and Citrus limon L. Burm. f. cultivar Eureka. Only males exhibite
