The Mediterranean, a sea with an already eventful history, is again undergoing an extreme change. A combination of general warming of the Mediterranean Sea and contact with the Indopacific world through the Suez Canal has set the stage for massive changes in the biota that inhabit this sea. For over a century, tropical species of all taxa have been migrating back into the Mediterranean, suggesting a duplication or restoration of a mid-Pliocene Piacenzian or late Miocene Tortonian situation. Test cases are presented in three major taxa. It is not a serial invasion by individual rogue exotic and

Tinea nigra is a superficial mycosis associated with a dematiaceous fungus called Phaeoannellomyces werneckii. It is clinically characterized by asymptomatic non-scaly brown and black macules, the most common localization is the palmar region. Only one bilateral case occurring on the plantar skin and four palmar bilateral cases have been reported. We report the case of a 5-year-old boy presenting two hyperpigmented lesions with an irregular contour in both palmar regions, which appeared three months prior to presentation. Topical treatment with ketoconazole was effective.

The bacterium Yersinia pestis causes bubonic plague. In Central Asia, where human plague is still reported regularly, the bacterium is common in natural populations of great gerbils. By using field data from 1949-1995 and previously undescribed statistical techniques, we show that Y. pestis prevalence in gerbils increases with warmer springs and wetter summers: A 1 degrees C increase in spring is predicted to lead to a >50% increase in prevalence. Climatic conditions favoring plague apparently existed in this region at the onset of the Black Death as well as when the most recent plague pandemi

Although broad links between climatic factors and coccidioidomycosis have been established, the identification of simple and robust relationships linking climatic controls to seasonal timing and outbreaks of the disease has remained elusive. Using an adaptive data-oriented method for estimating date of exposure, in this article I analyze hypotheses linking climate and dust to fungal growth and dispersion, and evaluate their respective roles for Pima County, Arizona. Results confirm a strong bimodal disease seasonality that was suspected but not previously seen in reported data. Dispersion-rela

Global climate change might expand the distribution of vector-borne pathogens in both time and space, thereby exposing host populations to longer transmission seasons, and immunologically naive populations to newly introduced pathogens. In the African highlands, where cool temperatures limit malaria parasite development, increases in temperature might enhance malaria transmission. St Louis encephalitis viral replication and the length of the transmission season depend upon ambient temperature. Warming temperatures in the American southwest might place at risk migratory, non-immune elderly pers

That the enhanced greenhouse effect may prove to influence human health will come as no surprise. One of the potential health consequences is a change in distribution patterns of vector-borne diseases. In tropical countries, such diseases are a major cause of illness and death. One of the most important vector-borne diseases in the world is malaria, which is associated with one of four species of parasite and transmitted by a mosquito vector. Climatic conditions, and temperature in particular, directly influence mosquito development, feeding-frequency and longevity of the mosquito, as well as

Previous reports of cases of melioidosis that were seen in nonendemic areas of Australia describe recrudescences of latent infection. We describe the case of a patient who presented in the cooler climate of Melbourne with a probable primary, subacute pulmonary infection with Pseudomonas pseudomallei. This case illustrates several points that bear consideration in the management of atypical pneumonia and, more specifically, pulmonary melioidosis. Historical and occupational clues are easily missed or unrecognized, while a persistent growth of gentamicin-resistant Pseudomonas species should arou

BACKGROUND: The use of single-use laryngeal masks has increased in recent decades; yet, their climate and environmental impacts remain poorly understood. This study aimed to compare the climate impacts of reusable and single-use laryngeal masks.
METHODS: We conducted a life cycle assessment that compared the reusable Ambu Aura40 with the single-use Ambu AuraStraight and Intersurgical Igel+ laryngeal masks. Data were obtained from the manufacturers, the ecoinvent database v3.10 and from Helsingborg Hospital, Sweden. Climate impacts were assessed using the ReCiPe2016 method, assuming 40 reuses

BACKGROUND: Climate change is increasingly affecting the health of vulnerable population groups, particularly older adults living in residential and nursing homes. Heat, extreme weather events, air pollution, altered allergen exposure and other climate-related factors increase the risk of dehydration, cardiovascular diseases, infections, psychological strain and social isolation. At the same time, the health sector itself is a significant emitter of carbon dioxide (CO₂) and is particularly vulnerable due to demographic changes and rising care needs.
METHODS: Interviews with experts from resid

Climate change is a major public health issue in the 21st century, and the links between climate change and health are increasingly becoming recognised by researchers and policy-makers. Interventions aimed at promoting sustainable behaviours, that is, reducing harmful activities and inducing pro-environmental action as well as adaptive capacities, can be diverse in targeting changes in culture, feedback loops and technological development. A focus on changing both individual and collective behaviours is indispensable to reduce the negative impacts on health. This overview outlines the connecti

BACKGROUND: Malaria transmission is influenced by a complex interplay of factors including climate, socio-economic, environmental factors and interventions. Malaria control efforts across Africa have shown a mixed impact. Climate driven factors may play an increasing role with climate change. Efforts to strengthen routine facility-based monthly malaria data collection across Africa create an increasingly valuable data source to interpret burden trends and monitor control programme progress. A better understanding of the association with other climatic and non-climatic drivers of malaria incide

Global climate change threatens the sustainability of agriculture and agroforestry worldwide through increased heat, drought, surface evaporation and associated soil drying. Exposure of crops and forests to warmer and drier environments will increase leaf:air water vapour-pressure deficits (VPD), and will result in increased drought susceptibility and reduced productivity, not only in arid regions but also in tropical regions with seasonal dry periods. Fast-growing, short-rotation forestry (SRF) bioenergy crops such as poplar (Populus spp.) and willow (Salix spp.) are particularly susceptible

PURPOSE: Climate warming can change the geographic distribution and intensity of the transmission of vector-borne diseases such as malaria. The transmitted parasites usually benefit from increased temperatures as both their reproduction and development are accelerated. Lower Saxony (northwestern Germany) has been a malaria region until the 1950s, and the vector species are still present throughout Germany. This gave reason to investigate whether a new autochthonous transmission could take place if the malaria pathogen was introduced again in Germany.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: The spatial distrib

Anthropogenic climate change presents significant health challenges for older people with care needs across all care settings, from private homes and supported living arrangements to institutional care facilities. Those particularly at risk include individuals with limited mobility, multimorbidity, or social isolation. Care and support systems therefore need to implement measures for both climate change mitigation and adaptation. Mitigation encompasses reducing energy and water consumption, minimising waste, decreasing reliance on fossil fuels, managing chemicals, and strengthening political a

The scientific community has produced increasingly robust knowledge and evidence of the physical impacts of warming on time scales of tens of decades and longer. However, the social and humanitarian impacts of climate overshoot remain largely unknown. As we quickly approach the Paris Agreement's aspirational target of 1.5 °C of global mean temperature rise, new and dynamic climate and social realities of climate overshoot must be considered and managed. Here, we outline 5 factors influencing human and social climate overshoot impacts, describe potential post-peak behavior that would lead to va

Children are particularly vulnerable to the harmful health effects of increasing global temperatures and more frequent extreme weather events, and the adverse effects of exposure to climate change-related events in utero and during childhood can have cascading consequences throughout the lifetime. This article primarily focuses on the neurodevelopmental and educational sequelae of climate change on children including discussions on the consequences of increased exposure to air pollution, poorer parental and childhood mental health, an increase in vector and water borne diseases, and food and w

In recent decades, dengue has become a global issue due to its rapid spread and significant public health impact. Climate change is recognized as a key factor in the geographical spread of dengue and its vectors. Climate change affects dengue transmission through changes in temperature and precipitation, which affect both vectors and arboviruses. Climate change can also disrupt human migration patterns facilitating the spread of the virus and the invasion of vectors into new regions. Understanding the impact of climate change on dengue and its vectors is essential for developing strategies to
