BACKGROUND: Rising global atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2) concentrations and surface temperatures could negatively affect rice yields and nutritional quality; however, their effects on arsenic accumulation in paddy rice have not been assessed concurrently. We aimed to assess the impact of increases in CO2 and temperature (individually and in combination) on arsenic concentrations in rice, characterise soil properties that might influence arsenic uptake, and model the associated risks of cancer and other health outcomes due to increased arsenic exposure.
METHODS: For this modelling study we p

This study investigates the impacts of climate variables on dengue transmission dynamics using an advanced deterministic model that incorporates climate-related entomological parameters. Key findings indicate that temperature and rainfall significantly influence dengue transmission by affecting mosquito behavior and life cycles. Human behavior plays a key role in influencing the severity and spread of dengue amid climate change. To effectively address climate-related impacts on dengue, strategies must go beyond technological and environmental solutions and also focus on modifying behaviors rel

Ixodes ricinus is the primary vector for Lyme disease and tick-borne encephalitis across Europe. However, the environmental drivers of the tick's complex life cycle have not been quantified with real-world data, making it challenging to incorporate tick demography into tick-borne disease transmission models. To address this gap, we fitted a mechanistic model to a detailed 10-year longitudinal dataset from four sites in Northern France, where I. ricinus is abundant and Lyme disease and tick-borne encephalitis have been reported for decades. By incorporating key demographic processes and the inf

Over the course of a few decades, climate change has caused a rapid and alarming reshaping of species habitats, resulting in mass extinction, particularly among sensitive species. In order to investigate the effects of climate change on species distribution and assess habitat suitability, researchers have developed species distribution models (SDMs) that estimate present and future species distribution. In West Asia, thyme species such as T. fedtschenkoi, T. pubescens, and T. transcaucasicus are rich in thymol and carvacrol, and are commonly used as herbal tea, spice, flavoring agents, and med

Municipal solid waste management is a major concern in developing economies, requiring collective international efforts to achieve carbon neutrality by diverting waste from disposal facilities. This study aims to highlight the importance of the waste sector as it has the potential to significantly contribute to climate change and its toxicity impact on the local ecosystem. Out of the total municipal solid waste generated, only 78 % is collected, either open dumped or thrown in sanitary landfills. The waste sector's ecological impact value is calculated for the Earth's regions, and it is very h

Aphids can have a significant impact on the growth and commercial yield of spruce plantations. Here we develop a mechanistic deterministic mathematical model for the dynamics of the green spruce aphid (Elatobium abietum Walker) growing on Sitka spruce (Picea sitchensis (Bong.) Carr.). These grow in a northern British climate in managed plantations, with planting, thinning and a 60-year rotation. Aphid infestation rarely kills the tree but can reduce growth by up to 55%. We used the Edinburgh Forest Model (efm) to simulate spruce tree growth. The aphid sub-model is described in detail in an app

Although traffic crashes involving buses are less frequent than those involving other vehicle types, the consequences of bus crashes are high due to the potential for multiple injuries and casualties. As driver error is a primary factor affecting bus crashes, driver safety education is one of the main countermeasures used to mitigate crash risk. In China, however, safety education is not as focused as it should be, largely due to the limited research identifying the specific driver behaviors, and potential influences on those behaviors, that are correlated with crashes. The aim of this study i

Human skin is subject to frequent changes in ambient temperature and humidity and needs to cope with these environmental modifications. To decipher the molecular response of human skin to repeated climatic change, a versatile model of skin equivalent subject to "hot-wet" (40°C, 80% relative humidity [RH]) or "cold-dry" (10°C, 40% RH) climatic stress repeated daily was used. To obtain an exhaustive view of the molecular mechanisms elicited by climatic change, large-scale gene expression DNA microarray analysis was performed and modulated function was determined by bioinformatic annotation. BACKGROUND: Major outbreaks of hand, foot and mouth disease (HFMD) have been reported in China since 2008, posing a great threat to the health of children. Although many studies have examined the effect of meteorological variables on the incidence of HFMD, the results have been inconsistent. This study aimed to quantify the relationship between meteorological factors and HFMD occurrence in different climates of mainland China using spatial panel data models.
METHODS: All statistical analyses were carried out according to different climate types. We firstly conducted a descriptive analysis to

Understanding the spatial scale and temporal pattern of disease incidence is a fundamental prerequisite for the development of appropriate management and intervention strategies. It is particularly critical, given the need to understand the elevated risks linked to climate change, to allow the most likely changes in the distribution of parasites and disease vectors to be predicted under a range of climate change scenarios. Using statistical models, the spatial distribution and climatic correlates of a range of parasites and diseases have been mapped previously, but their development into dynam

Green sea turtles (Chelonia mydas) are globally distributed and use tropical and subtropical beaches for nesting. Green turtles exhibit temperature-dependent sex determination (TSD), a mechanism by which incubation temperature during a critical developmental window determines offspring sex. As global temperatures rise, many nesting populations could be producing increasingly female-biased sex ratios, raising concerns about long-term population viability. Our ability to assess demographic risks has been hindered by the absence of validated models that accurately convert field-recorded nest temp

INTRODUCTION: Invasive aquatic plants obstruct waterways, disrupt fisheries, and cause significant economic, social, and ecological impacts. Predicting their potential distribution and associated economic losses under climate change is critical for global risk management.
METHODS: This study aimed to predict the global potential distribution of four major invasive aquatic plants (Pontederia crassipes, Pistia stratiotes, Cabomba caroliniana, Alternanthera philoxeroides) and assess associated economic losses under current and future climates using species distribution modeling (Biomod2) and the

This study aimed to investigate the spatio-temporal patterns and to assess climatic and social determinants of health as predictors of malaria incidence in Tete Province, Mozambique, from 2016 to 2022. The analysis was based on the INLA (Integrated Nested Laplace Approximations) approach, applied to a hierarchical Bayesian model that employed a reparameterized Besag spatial structure, an AR1 temporal process, and Type IV space-time interactions. To capture seasonality, first- and second-order Fourier terms were incorporated. Malaria case data were obtained from the SISMA platform, climatic var

BACKGROUND: Kyasanur forest disease (KFD), known as monkey fever, was for the first time reported in 1957 from the Shivamogga district of Karnataka. But since 2011, it has been spreading to the neighbouring state of Kerala, Goa, Maharashtra, and Tamil Nadu. The disease is transmitted to humans, monkeys and by the infected bite of ticks Haemaphysalis spinigera. It is known that deforestation and ecological changes are the main reasons for KFD emergence, but the bio-climatic understanding and emerging pathways remain unknown.
METHODS: The present study aims to understand the bio-climatic determ

Today's climate change is a major problem and challenge for the global environment and human civilization, and it can lead to dramatical floods over specific regions. As climate change intensifies, climate change adaptation strategies, such as flood insurance, energy taxes, and other risky financial strategies, have drawn worldwide attention and discussion. Risk control methods have been widely used to mitigate the impact of climate change on past flood losses, but past risk control strategies on climate change have not focused on the exploration of the relationship between environment, societ

Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus are two important mosquito species which transmit various infectious arbovirus diseases represented mainly by dengue fever. These two species of mosquito have a wide range of distribution and strong transfer capacity. With ongoing global climate change, we are facing an increasing public health threat from the rapid spread of vectors in wider geographical areas. Based on observed occurrence records of Ae. aegypti and Ae. albopictus and high-resolution environmental layers reflecting climate and land-use conditions, a Maxent niche modeling approach was adopted

Zoonotic filarioses caused by Dirofilaria immitis and Dirofilaria repens are transmitted by culicid mosquitoes. Therefore Dirofilaria transmission depends on climatic factors like temperature and humidity. In spite of the dry climate of most of the Spanish territory, there are extensive irrigated crops areas providing moist habitats favourable for mosquito breeding. A GIS model to predict the risk of Dirofilaria transmission in Spain, based on temperatures and rainfall data as well as in the distribution of irrigated crops areas, is constructed. The model predicts that potential risk of Dirofi

Mosquitoes, acting as vectors, are involved in the transmission of viruses. Thus, their abundances, which strongly depend on the weather and environment, are closely linked to major disease outbreaks. The aim of this paper is to provide a tool to predict vector abundance. In order to describe the dynamics of mosquito populations, we developed a matrix model integrating climate fluctuations. The population is structured in five stages: two egg stages (immature and mature), one larval stage and two female flying stages (nulliparous and parous). The water availability in breeding sites was consid

BACKGROUND: Adolescents play a crucial role in societal advancement, and fostering their development is a global priority. The Positive Youth Development (PYD) framework emphasizes strength-based approaches, highlighting life skills such as teamwork, goal setting, and problem-solving. Physical education (PE) serves as an effective platform for cultivating these skills. While extensive research has explored sports’ role in life skills development across various regions, studies in Chinese-speaking contexts remain limited. Cultural and linguistic factors may influence psychological mechanisms un
