Cluster analysis describes constellations of cardiac anomalies presenting in spinal anomaly patients.

BACKGROUND: Cardiac anomalies are prevalent in patients with bony spinal anomalies. Prior studies evaluating incidences of bony congenital anomalies of the spine are limited. The Kids' Inpatient Database (KID) yields national discharge estimates of rare pediatric conditions like congenital disorders. This study utilized cluster analysis to study patterns of concurrent vertebral anomalies, anal atresia, cardiac malformations, trachea-esophageal fistula, renal dysplasia, and limb anomalies (VACTERL anomalies) co-occurring in patients with spinal congenital anomalies. METHODS: Retrospective revi

Analysis of Asperger Syndrome Using Genetic-Evolutionary Random Support Vector Machine Cluster.

Asperger syndrome (AS) is subtype of autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Diagnosis and pathological analysis of AS through resting-state fMRI data is one of the hot topics in brain science. We employed a new model called the genetic-evolutionary random Support Vector Machine cluster (GE-RSVMC) to classify AS and normal people, and search for lesions. The model innovatively integrates the methods of the cluster and genetic evolution to improve the performance of the model. We randomly selected samples and sample features to construct GE-RSVMC, and then used the cluster to classify and extract lesio

The Multiple Faces of Non-Cystic Fibrosis Bronchiectasis. A Cluster Analysis Approach.

RATIONALE: The clinical presentation and prognosis of non-cystic fibrosis bronchiectasis are both very heterogeneous. OBJECTIVES: To identify different clinical phenotypes for non-cystic fibrosis bronchiectasis and their impact on prognosis. METHODS: Using a standardized protocol, we conducted a multicenter observational cohort study at six Spanish centers with patients diagnosed with non-cystic fibrosis bronchiectasis before December 31, 2005, with a 5-year follow-up from the bronchiectasis diagnosis. A cluster analysis was used to classify the patients into homogeneous groups by means of s

Identifying Male Sexual Offender Subtypes Using Cluster Analysis and the Static-2002R.

This study examines whether clinically meaningful subgroups could be identified within a large, undifferentiated group of convicted adult male sex offenders. Of eight cluster analyses, a reliable three-cluster solution emerged based on the subscores of the Static-2002R with 345 sex offenders. To establish the validity of the emergent clusters, the three groups of offenders were compared on four domains: criminal history, psychosexual development, sexual attitudes and interests, and recidivism. The findings revealed meaningful differences among the group, and the implications of subgroup member

Cluster analysis identifies characteristic phenotypes of asthma with accelerated lung function decline.

OBJECTIVE: While the majority of individuals with asthma retain normal lung function over time, some exhibit accelerated lung function decline. Preservation of lung function is an important aspect of asthma management. Whether the asthma guidelines can prevent lung function decline remains controversial. This study was performed to determine the distribution of asthmatic subjects with greater lung function decline and to identify characteristic clinical features of such subjects treated in accordance with clinical guidelines by using hierarchical cluster analysis. METHODS: Eighty-six asthmati

Latent class cluster analysis to understand heterogeneity in prostate cancer treatment utilities.

BACKGROUND: Men with prostate cancer are often challenged to choose between conservative management and a range of available treatment options each carrying varying risks and benefits. The trade-offs are between an improved life-expectancy with treatment accompanied by important risks such as urinary incontinence and erectile dysfunction. Previous studies of preference elicitation for prostate cancer treatment have found considerable heterogeneity in individuals' preferences for health states given similar treatments and clinical risks. METHODS: Using latent class mixture model (LCA), we firs

Methods for the statistical analysis of binary data in split-cluster designs.

Split-cluster designs are frequently used in the health sciences when naturally occurring clusters such as multiple sites or organs in the same subject are assigned to different treatments. However, statistical methods for the analysis of binary data arising from such designs are not well developed. The purpose of this article is to propose and evaluate a new procedure for testing the equality of event rates in a design dividing each of k clusters into two segments having multiple sites (e.g., teeth, lesions). The test statistic proposed is a generalization of a previously published procedure

Bayesian methods of analysis for cluster randomized trials with binary outcome data.

We explore the potential of Bayesian hierarchical modelling for the analysis of cluster randomized trials with binary outcome data, and apply the methods to a trial randomized by general practice. An approximate relationship is derived between the intracluster correlation coefficient (ICC) and the between-cluster variance used in a hierarchical logistic regression model. By constructing an informative prior for the ICC on the basis of available information, we are thus able implicitly to specify an informative prior for the between-cluster variance. The approach also provides us with a credibl

The classification of bulimic eating disorders: a community-based cluster analysis study.

There is controversy over how best to classify eating disorders in which there is recurrent binge eating. Many patients with recurrent binge eating do not meet diagnostic criteria for other of the two established eating disorders, anorexia nervosa or bulimia nervosa. The present study was designed to derive an empirically based, and clinically meaningful, diagnostic scheme by identifying subgroups from among those with recurrent binge eating, testing the validity of these subgroups and comparing their predictive validity with that of the DSM-IV scheme. A general population sample of 250 young

Cluster analysis of MCMI scores of suicidal psychiatric patients: four personality profiles.

Millon Clinical Multiaxial Inventory (MCMI) scores from 299 suicidal psychiatric outpatients were cluster analyzed in hopes of identifying clinical subgroups and deriving specific treatment indications. The analysis revealed four personality profiles: Negativistic/Avoidant/Schizoid, Avoidant/Dependent/ Negativistic, Antisocial, and Histrionic/Narcissistic. This grouping was validated by examining demographics, diagnoses, and scores on several psychometric scales. Results showed few differences in demographics, diagnosis, or intelligence, but significant differences in depression severity, hope

Identification of patient subgroups by hierarchical cluster analysis in femoral neck fractures and surgical outcome analysis.

INTRODUCTION: Femoral neck fractures are a heterogeneous entity with wide variability in patient profiles and outcomes. Single-variable classification may not capture the multidimensional interactions that influence prognosis. This study aimed to identify clinically meaningful patient subgroups using hierarchical cluster analysis and to compare mortality, postoperative mobility, and complication rates between these subgroups. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This retrospective cohort study included 672 patients treated for intracapsular femoral neck fractures classified as AO Foundation/Orthopaedic Tra

Clinical phenotypes in α1-antitrypsin deficiency: a cluster analysis on EARCO data.

BACKGROUND: α-1 antitrypsin deficiency (AATD) is a rare, monogenic disorder predisposing individuals to liver and lung diseases. Yet, even within the same genotype, AATD is very heterogeneous in clinical presentation. This heterogeneity suggests a complex interplay of environmental and (epi)genetic factors, highlighting the need for a detection and study of clinical phenotypes. METHODS: Here, we performed a cluster analysis using baseline data from the European Alpha-1 Research Collaboration (EARCO) to identify distinct clinical phenotypes in AATD. RESULTS: We identified six clusters of AATD

Cluster Analysis of VERDICT MRI for Cancer Tissue Characterization in Neuroendocrine Tumors.

Diffusion MRI models accounting for varying diffusion times and high b-values, such as VERDICT, hold potential for non-invasively characterizing tumor tissue types, potentially enabling improved tumor grading, and treatment evaluation. Furthermore, cluster analysis can aid in identifying multidimensional patterns in the diffusion MRI (dMRI) data that are not apparent when analyzing individual parameters in isolation. The aim of this study was to evaluate how well cluster analysis of VERDICT parameters can be used for intratumor tissue characterization compared to ADC in a mouse model of human

Uncovering drug targets for cluster headache through proteome-wide Mendelian randomization analysis.

BACKGROUND: Cluster headache (CH) is a highly disabling primary headache disorder with a complex underlying mechanism. However, there are currently no effective targeted therapeutic drugs available. Existing medications often have limited efficacy and numerous side effects, which frequently fail to meet clinical needs. This study aims to identify potential new therapeutic targets for CH through proteome-wide mendelian randomization (PWMR). METHODS: We used PWMR to estimate the causal effects of plasma proteins on CH. This analysis integrated plasma protein quantitative trait loci (pQTL) data

Leveraging cluster analysis to compare click and chirp-evoked auditory brainstem responses.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: The Auditory Brainstem Response (ABR) can be recorded by presenting short-duration click and chirp stimuli. The ABR test is commonly used for threshold estimation and to examine auditory brainstem integrity. The neural integrity is evaluated at suprathreshold levels. This study aimed to compare click and CE-Chirp®-evoked ABRs recorded at suprathreshold levels in normal-hearing infants and adults, using cluster analysis to identify patterns and distinctions between responses to the two stimuli. METHODS: Click-evoked and CE-Chirp® evoked ABRs were recorded from infants

Epidemiological Characteristics and Spatiotemporal Cluster Analysis of Scrub Typhus - China, 2006-2023.

INTRODUCTION: Scrub typhus, also known as jungle typhus, is a vector-borne disease transmitted to humans through the bite of infected chiggers carrying Orientia tsutsugamushi. In recent years, it has reemerged as a significant public health concern in China, with cases being identified in an increasing number of previously unaffected regions. METHODS: Data were obtained from the China Information System for Disease Control and Prevention (CISDCP). We employed Joinpoint 5.1.0 for trend analysis and RStudio 4.4.1 for statistical analyses, including Mann-Whitney U tests (non-parametric), Cochran
