AIM: Staphylococcus with positive coagulase (SPC) is a major problem for beef consumers in the northern part of Cameroon. For this purpose, the SPC concentrations in beef produced and supplied in the northern regions were determined, as well as the resistance profile of these bacteria to antibiotics.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 125 samples were obtained by the wet and dry swabbing method in traditional slaughterhouses and butcheries to evaluate the SPC concentration in meat, and then, 102 SPC isolations were collected to determine the antibiotic resistance profile.
RESULTS: The distrib

Staphylococcus hyicus is one of the opportunistic pathogens that cause infections to animals. Early studies have demonstrated that S. hyicus is the causative agents of exudative epidermitis in pigs, arthritis in horses and chicken, mastitis in cow, and bacteremia, sepsis and multiple organ failure in humans. Here, we report the isolation and identification of a representative S. hyicus isolate, named JLHN15, from a pig farm with a disease characterized by bacteremia, suppurative pneumonia and fibrinous pericarditis. Our results indicate that JLHN15 is a pathogenic coagulase-positive Staphyloco

BACKGROUND: Coagulase-negative Staphylococci (CoNS), previously dismissed at contaminants, have now emerged as an important cause of nosocomial infections especially in patients with implants and prosthetic devices. They are a well-known cause of bloodstream infections, urinary tract infections, wound infections, prosthetic valve endocarditis and eye infections. This study was conducted with an aim to identify CoNS at the species level from various clinical samples and determine the antimicrobial resistance pattern of these isolates.
METHODS: This cross sectional study was carried out from Se

OBJECTIVE: To determine persistence of coagulase-negative staphylococci (CNS) on a hematology-oncology ward and to determine the value of phenotypic and genotypic procedures for establishing clonality among CNS isolates.
DESIGN: Strains of CNS isolated from bacteremic patients (n = 139) were typed by biochemical reactivity, antibiotic susceptibility, DNA macrorestriction analysis by pulsed-field gel electrophoresis (PFGE), and arbitrary primed polymerase chain reaction (AP PCR). Coagulase-negative staphylococci were subgrouped in a random collection (n = 20) used for the evaluation of the typ

A young female presenting with a history suggestive of renal colic was found by intravenous pyelography to have Pyeloureteritis Cystica. In association with this condition she had a urinary tract infection due to a coagulase-negative staphylococcus. Following a two week course of appropriate antibiotic therapy, her urine became sterile and repeat pyelography revealed no abnormality.

Coagulase-negative staphylococci (CoNS) are recognized as comprising the main part of human normal microbiota and are rarely associated with severe and intensive infections. However, these organisms can cause a number of infections in humans, especially immunocompromised patients and neonates. Bacterial meningitis, as an important and acute infection in the central nervous system, is still a major global health challenge and a serious infectious disease, causing a high rate of mortality and morbidity. CoNS as causative agents of meningitis are generally related to trauma or direct implantation

Coagulase-negative staphylococci (CoNS) have been identified as a major cause of nosocomial infections. Nasal carriage of CoNS in nurses and physicians is known to be an important risk factor for potential hospital infections. This study was carried out to investigate the prevalence of nasal carriage of uncommon coagulase-negative staphylococci among nurse and physician staffs of Tehran University Hospitals. A total of 116 CoNS were isolated from anterior nares of the study participants working in different wards of the hospitals. Thirteen uncommon CoNS were identified using phenotypic and bio

Coagulase-negative staphylococci (CNS) are isolated frequently from unbred and primigravid heifers and from lactating and nonlactating dairy cows. The importance of CNS intramammary infections that occur during the nonlactating period has not been adequately delineated. Mammary secretions from udders infected with CNS during early lactation and the nonlactating period have increased somatic cell counts, CNS have been isolated in mammary secretions from cows with clinical mastitis, and a few studies have indicated that CNS infected mammary glands produced significantly less milk during lactatio

BACKGROUND: Optimizing antibiotic duration in neonatal intensive care units is essential for antimicrobial stewardship and microbiome preservation. However, the safety of short antibiotic courses for uncomplicated late-onset coagulase-negative staphylococcal (CoNS) sepsis remains uncertain.
AIM: To determine whether short (≤96 hours) antibiotic treatment of uncomplicated CoNS sepsis in premature infants admitted to a neonatal intensive care unit is noninferior to long treatment (>96 hours) by comparing relapse rates.
METHODS: This multicenter, observational cohort study reviewed all proven n

BACKGROUND: Methicillin-resistant coagulase-negative staphylococci (MR-CoNS) are multidrug-resistant bacteria that are difficult to treat because of their ability to form biofilms.
OBJECTIVES: In the present study, we evaluated the antibiotic-resistant phenotypes, biofilm-forming ability, and biofilm associated genes of 55 clinical MR-CoNS isolates obtained from two hospitals in Thailand.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: MALDI-TOF-MS and tuf gene sequencing were performed to determine the species of all isolates. Biofilm production was determined using Congo red agar (CRA) and the microtiter plate (MT

The epidemiology of coagulase-negative staphylococcal (CNS) bacteremia among adult ICU patients remains unclear. Decontamination studies among ICU patients provide a unique opportunity to study the impacts of different diagnostic criteria, exposure to various decontamination interventions, and various other factors, on its incidence over three decades. Decontamination studies among ICU patients reporting CNS bacteremia incidence data were obtained mostly from recent systematic reviews. The CNS bacteremia incidence within component (control and intervention) groups of decontamination studies wa

Staphylococcal food poisoning is considered to be one of the most common foodborne illnesses worldwide. Because milk is rich in nutrients and its neutral pH, it leads to the growth of various bacteria. To date, the correlation between enterotoxigenic potential in Staphylococcus species and antimicrobial resistance (AMR), using bioinformatics analysis in buffalo and cow raw milk and the possible health risks from these bacteria, has not been examined in Egypt. A total of 42 Staphylococcus isolates representing 12 coagulase-positive staphylococci (Staphylococcus aureus and Staphylococcus interme

Coagulase-negative staphylococci (CoNS) are the most frequent cause of late-onset sepsis (LOS) in neonatal intensive care units (NICUs). Staphylococcus epidermidis is usually considered the most prevalent CoNS in this setting. However, recent reports have identified Staphylococcus capitis, another CoNS, as an emerging cause of bacteremia in NICU wards. S. capitis is the main cause of LOS in several NICUs in France, whereas this species is rarely found in adult patients from the same hospitals. S. capitis isolates from NICU infants share several striking features: they all belong to the same pu

At the Department of Clinical Bacteriology of Medical University of Warsaw, S. aureus strains displaying negative reactions in the coagulase tube-test were isolated with a relatively high frequency from clinical specimens. As many as seventeen of such strains all from different patients were isolated during 1994 among MRSA strains. Despite coagulase negativity all strains were positive in tests for clumping factor (CF), protein A and thermonuclease. Biochemical characteristics, phage patterns and antibiotic resistance characteristics of these strains were tested. Most of the coagulase-negative

Forty-six patients presenting with chronic orofacial muscle pain and eight age- and sex-matched control subjects were investigated for the carriage prevalence of, and exotoxin production by, coagulase-negative staphylococci (CNS). The eight control subjects were selected from an initial group of 41 subjects on the basis of the absence of musculoskeletal symptoms. There was a significantly higher prevalence and multiple carriage of four or more strains of CNS in patients with chronic muscle pain than in control subjects (23 versus 9 isolates/10 subjects). Two of the 103 CNS isolates from patien
