Sacrococcygeal teratoma (SCT) is a rare congenital tumor arising from pluripotent cells at the base of the coccyx and is most often detected during antenatal imaging. In this case, a massive SCT was identified at 26 + 2 weeks during routine ultrasound. The pregnancy was closely monitored with serial scans; however, the mother went into spontaneous preterm labor at 33 weeks and underwent emergency cesarean section. The neonate had an Altman Type I SCT, which was surgically excised on the fourth day of life, and histopathology confirmed a mature cystic teratoma. Postoperative wound infection was

We present 2 rare cases of lateral buttock and postanal congenital dermal sinus tract. These 2 children were noted to have a pit in the left upper lateral buttock and a postanal orifice after birth. Magnetic resonance imaging, computed tomography, and ultrasonography showed an inflammatory mass lesion in the buttock and a funicular structure adjacent to the rectum. Fistulography showed no connection between the pit and orifice. Surgical exploration revealed firm tracts from both the lateral buttock and postanus running deep to the tip of the coccyx. Histopathologic findings showed squamous cel

We report a case of adult sacrococcygeal teratoma resected by an abdominosacral approach. A cystic mass 13 cm in diameter in the pelvic cavity and left hydronephrosis were detected incidentally by abdominal computed tomographic (CT) scan in a 55-year-old man. The pelvic tumor extending from the presacral area to the coccyx was resected via a combined abdominal and transsacral approach. The resected specimen weighed 700 g and the pathological diagnosis was mature teratoma. While the sacrococcygeal area is the most frequent site of teratoma in infants, it is a rare site in adults. This is to our

Splenogonadal fusion (SGF) is a rare abnormality with two known types. In the continuous type, the spleen is connected to the gonad, and there are often limb defects, micrognathia, or other congenital malformations such as ventricular septal defect, anal atresia, microgastria, spina bifida, craniosynostosis, thoracopagus, diaphragmatic hernia, hypoplastic lung and abnormal lung fissures, polymicrogyria, deficient coccyx, and bifid spine C6-T3. The discontinuous type is usually not associated with congenital defects, and the gonad that fused with an accessory spleen has no connection with the n

Chordomas are rare, slow-growing, locally aggressive malignant tumors arising from notochord remnants that commonly affect the sacrococcygeal area. Surgical resection with negative margins is crucial but often results in extended defects with exposed critical structures, necessitating complex reconstructions. The reconstruction techniques commonly employed and described in the literature often utilize musculocutaneous flaps, which are associated with higher donor site morbidity. Thus, the challenge remains to minimize donor site morbidity while ensuring effective reconstruction and long-term s

A 70-year-old male with anal pain and fever was diagnosed with rectal cancer perforation and abscess in the right gluteus maximus (GM) muscle. He underwent a transverse colon colostomy followed by preoperative capecitabine+oxaliplatin. Some local control was achieved but a residual abscess was observed in the right GM muscle. To secure circumferential resection margin by tumor reduction, he received chemoradiotherapy as total neoadjuvant therapy (TNT) and underwent laparoscopic abdominoperineal resection, D3 lymph node dissection, combined coccyx resection, and partial resection of the right G

INTRODUCTION: Although abdominoperineal resection (APR) is required for rectal cancer invading the levator ani muscle, its curative outcomes remain poorer than those of other rectal surgeries.1-3 In particular, the anatomic complexity around the anterior wall of the rectum increases the technical difficulty during APR, resulting in a high frequency of margin involvement that causes local recurrence. In this video, we present the technical details of a robotic perineal-first APR approach.
METHODS: For a 46 year-old man, locally advanced rectal cancer invading the levator ani muscles was diagno

CASE: We present a 26-year-old active duty man who sustained a coccygeal fracture and gluteus maximus hematoma after a fall from height during training. The patient returned 3 weeks postinjury with symptoms and physical examination findings concerning for gluteal compartment syndrome. An expanding gluteal hematoma was confirmed on imaging and the patient was taken to the operating room for emergent evacuation and endovascular hemostasis.
CONCLUSIONS: This case of gluteal compartment syndrome is a unique contribution to the literature with respect to the specific vascular injury observed and t

Coccygodynia is a problem with a small percentage (1%) of the population suffering from musculoskeletal disorders. This pain is often associated with trauma, falling on the tailbone, long cycling, or by women after childbirth. The reason for the described problem can be the actual morphological changes. Idiopathic coccygodynia causes therapeutic difficulties to specialists of many fields. Unsatisfactory treatment, including coccygectomy tends to seek new solutions. They belong to them techniques exploited in the manual therapy which in their spectrum hold: direct techniques - per rectum as wel

A case report and literature review. To present a rare case of facture dislocation of the sacro-coccygeal joint in a 12-year-old boy who was treated conservatively. Fracture dislocations of the sacrum or the sacro-coccygeal joint are infrequent injuries and are rarely reported. The treatment for these disorders is usually conservative. Detailed description of the anterior dislocation (Salter-Harris type I) of the sacro-coccygeal joint in this child and its management are presented, with review of the relevant literature. A conservative treatment was performed, with excellent clinical and radio

There remains a lack of definitive evidence regarding the etiology of pars defects, though evidence is mounting in favor of micro-trauma. Approximation of the articular facets, as occurs in subjects with increased sacral base angles, may result in greater stress to this area, leading to the development of pars defects. Alternatively, pars defects may facilitate approximation of the articular facets, resulting in a higher sacral base angle. The purpose of this study was to determine whether persons with spondylolysis have greater sacral base angles compared to persons without spondylolysis. The

A case of a complete lumbosacral agenesis is presented, whose etiological factors are unknown. Clinically, motor deficit corresponded to the agenesis level, but the sensibility and the autonomous nervous system functions, which were conserved, partially, in lower levels than the normal ones in the agenesis. The case report is completed with electromiography, mielography, rectal biopsy, urography, cistography, opaque enema and inborn infection study. There are three facts: a partially conserved sensibility in the lower extremities, normal bladder function and above all, the presence of nervous

A man in his mid-40s presented to the colorectal surgery clinic with complaints of chronic perianal pain for over 20 years. He had episodes of urinary incontinence associated with pain. There were no other symptoms to suspect bowel pathology. On examination, he was found to have a tender mass in the retro-rectal plane without any evidence of rectal mucosal irregularity. He underwent an MRI of the pelvis, which showed a well-defined T2 hyperintense partly cystic lesion in the presacral region abutting the mesorectal fascia and a normal prostate gland. With a suspicion of a tailgut cyst or a dup

INTRODUCTION: Anterior sacral meningocele is a rare congenital disorder, occurring isolated or in syndromic disease.
CASE REPORT: A 15-year-old patient who complained of abdominal pain and urinary dysfunction was managed surgically. Imaging diagnosed a giant presacral meningocele and agenesis of the coccyx.
DISCUSSION: The presentation of sacral meningocele can be poorly symptomatic, which is why some patients are diagnosed late. Sometimes, diagnosis is suggested by non-specific abdominal symptoms or complications. Abdominal-pelvic radiological examination and lumbar spine MRI are essential,

Intersphincteric resection (ISR) involves the anatomy of hiatal ligament, internal and external sphincter and conjoined longitudinal muscle. The hiatal ligament is actually a branch of the longitudinal muscle of rectum, shown as an uneven ring attached to the levator ani muscle. The internal sphincter is the end of the circular muscle of rectum which begins at the level of hiatal ligament formation. The distance from the upper boundary of internal sphincter to dentate line is significantly different among individuals. Although there is adipose tissue in the space between the internal and exter
