Radiological measurement of cochlear dimensions in cochlear hypoplasia and its effect on cochlear implant selection.

OBJECTIVE: To determine the effect of cochlear dimensions on cochlear implant selection in cochlear hypoplasia patients. METHODS: Temporal bone computed tomography images of 36 patients diagnosed with cochlear hypoplasia between 2010 and 2016 were retrospectively reviewed and compared with those of 40 controls without sensorineural hearing loss. RESULTS: Basal turn length and mid-modiolar height were significantly lower in the cochlear hypoplasia patients with subtypes I, II and III than in the control group (p < 0.001). Mid-scalar length was significantly shorter in subtype I-III patients a

Prelingually Deaf Children With Cochlear Implants Show Better Perception of Voice Cues and Speech in Competing Speech Than Postlingually Deaf Adults With Cochlear Implants.

OBJECTIVES: Postlingually deaf adults with cochlear implants (CIs) have difficulties with perceiving differences in speakers' voice characteristics and benefit little from voice differences for the perception of speech in competing speech. However, not much is known yet about the perception and use of voice characteristics in prelingually deaf implanted children with CIs. Unlike CI adults, most CI children became deaf during the acquisition of language. Extensive neuroplastic changes during childhood could make CI children better at using the available acoustic cues than CI adults, or the lack

Biohybrid cochlear implants: neural interfaces, regenerative pathways, and translational benchmarks.

Cochlear implants (CIs) restore hearing by electrically stimulating the auditory nerve, yet the millimeter-scale electrode-neuron separation limits spatial selectivity and temporal fidelity. Rather than relocating the electrode array, we propose a biohybrid strategy that preserves the conventional scala tympani insertion and closes this gap biologically by interposing living neural constructs between the array and the modiolus. This approach leverages the Canaliculi Perforantes of Schuknecht (CPS) to deliver spatially confined biochemical, mechanical, and electrical cues from the scala tympani

Impact of cochlear implants use on voice production and quality.

Cochlear implant users experience difficulties controlling their vocalizations compared to normal hearing peers. However, less is known about their voice quality. The primary aim of the present study was to determine if cochlear implant users' voice quality would be categorized as dysphonic by the Acoustic Voice Quality Index (AVQI) and smoothed cepstral peak prominence (CPPS). A secondary aim was to determine if vocal quality is further impacted when using bilateral implants compared to using only one implant. The final aim was to determine how residual hearing impacts voice quality. Twenty-s

Verbal, Figural, and Arithmetic Fluency of Children with Cochlear Implants.

Cochlear implantation gives children with prelingual severe hearing loss and deafness the opportunity to develop their hearing abilities, speech, language, cognitive abilities and academic skills with adequate rehabilitation. The aim of the research was to analyze verbal, figural and arithmetic fluency and their interrelationship in children with a cochlear implant (CI) and children with normal hearing (NH). A total of 46 children with CI and 110 children with NH, aged 9 to 16, participated in the research. Verbal fluency was assessed using phonemic and semantic fluency, and non-verbal fluency

Voice Emotion Recognition by Mandarin-Speaking Children with Cochlear Implants.

OBJECTIVES: Emotional expressions are very important in social interactions. Children with cochlear implants can have voice emotion recognition deficits due to device limitations. Mandarin-speaking children with cochlear implants may face greater challenges than those speaking nontonal languages; the pitch information is not well preserved in cochlear implants, and such children could benefit from child-directed speech, which carries more exaggerated distinctive acoustic cues for different emotions. This study investigated voice emotion recognition, using both adult-directed and child-directed

Auditory training for adults with cochlear implants: a systematic review.

OBJECTIVE: To systematically review the peer-reviewed literature on the efficacy of auditory training (AT) on auditory outcomes in post lingually deafened adults with cochlear implants (CIs). DESIGN: A systematic review. STUDY SAMPLE: Searches of five electronic databases yielded 10 studies published after 2010 that met the inclusion criteria. RESULTS: For post lingually deafened adults with CIs, the evidence is suggestive that some AT can improve some auditory outcomes compared to no training. More specifically, the evidence suggests that phonemic training can improve identification of tra

Comparisons of electrophysiological and psychophysical fitting methods for cochlear implants.

OBJECTIVE: This study compared two different versions of an electrophysiology-based software-guided cochlear implant fitting method with a procedure employing standard clinical software. The two versions used electrically evoked compound action potential (ECAP) thresholds for either five or all twenty-two electrodes to determine sound processor stimulation level profiles. Objective and subjective performance results were compared between software-guided and clinical fittings. DESIGN: Prospective, double-blind, single-subject repeated-measures with permuted ABCA sequences. STUDY SAMPLE: 48 po

Phenomenological needs assessment of parents of children with cochlear implants.

BACKGROUND: The use of cochlear implants has been a remarkable success in reducing disabilities in those with impaired hearing, which have made a significant change in the patients' quality of life. Only by relying on cochlear implants, disabilities cannot be eliminated in the hearing impaired, and, alongside this intervention, rehabilitation practices such as through family and community support are necessary. AIM: To explain the needs of parents of children with cochlear implants to increase the quality of rehabilitation services and family-based interventions. METHODS: A descriptive pheno

Central auditory development in children with cochlear implants: clinical implications.

A common finding in developmental neurobiology is that stimulation must be delivered to a sensory system within a narrow window of time (a sensitive period) during development in order for that sensory system to develop normally. Experiments with congenitally deaf children have allowed us to establish the existence and time limits of a sensitive period for the development of central auditory pathways in humans. Using the latency of cortical auditory evoked potentials (CAEPs) as a measure we have found that central auditory pathways are maximally plastic for a period of about 3.5 years. If the
