Insects have evolved remarkable abilities to navigate over short distances and during long-range seasonal migrations. The central complex (CX) is a navigation center in the insect brain that controls spatial orientation and directed locomotion. It is composed of the protocerebral bridge (PB), the upper (CBU) and lower (CBL) division of the central body, and a pair of noduli. While most of its functional organization and involvement in head-direction coding has been obtained from work on flies, bees, and locusts that largely rely on vision for navigation, little contribution has been provided b

BACKGROUND: Burkholderia pseudomallei and Burkholderia mallei are gram-negative pathogens responsible for the diseases melioidosis and glanders, respectively. Both species cause disease in humans and animals and have been designated as category B select agents by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Burkholderia thailandensis is a closely related bacterium that is generally considered avirulent for humans. While it can cause disease in rodents, the B. thailandensis 50% lethal dose (LD50) is typically ≥ 104-fold higher than the B. pseudomallei and B. mallei LD50 in mammalian mo

The acinar salivary glands of the cockroach, Periplaneta americana, are innervated by dopaminergic and serotonergic nerve fibers. Serotonin stimulates the secretion of protein-rich saliva, whereas dopamine causes the production of protein-free saliva. This suggests that dopamine acts selectively on ion-transporting peripheral cells within the acini and the duct cells, and that serotonin acts on the protein-producing central cells of the acini. We have investigated the pharmacology of the dopamine-induced secretory activity of the salivary gland of Periplaneta americana by testing several dopam

Airway eosinophilic inflammation is a characteristic feature of allergic asthma. Exposure to allergens produced by the German cockroach (Blattella germanica) is a risk factor for allergic disease in genetically predisposed individuals, and has been linked to an increase in asthma morbidity among cockroach-sensitive inner city children. To determine the role and contribution of specific HLA class II in the pathogenesis of allergic airway inflammation in cockroach-induced asthma, we generated double-transgenic, double-knockout mice expressing human HLA-DQ8, HLA-DQ6, and CD4 molecules in the abse

It is widely known that the cockroach is an inhalant allergen in atopic asthma and allergic rhinitis. Even though Bla g I and Bla g II are considered as the major allergens, several relatively high-molecular weight (MW) cockroach allergens have also been recently identified by IgE-immunoblot in western countries. However, the environmental control and diagnostic tests mainly focussed on Bla g I and Bla g II. Furthermore there is no data about major IgE-binding cockroach antigens in Korea. We performed this study to identify the major German cockroach allergens in Korean atopic children. By the

BACKGROUND: Previous studies have shown cockroach-induced antigen-specific IgE-mediated asthma. In cockroach-infested areas, more then 50% of asthmatic subjects may have positive skin reactions to this allergen. Partial purified Cr-PI allergen from American cockroaches contains allergens with molecular weights of 72 and 78 kDa; however, little is known about its effect on the lymphocyte proliferation and cytokine production.
OBJECTIVE: IgE synthesis is known to be regulated by interleukin-4 (IL-4) and interferon gamma (IFN gamma). Therefore, we studied Cr-PI allergen-induced cytokine producti

Fat body of adult male Blaberus discoidalis cockroaches exposed to B. discoidalis hypertrehalosemic hormone (HTH) in vitro showed a decline in tissue glycogen as carbohydrate increased in the medium. In vivo HTH injections increased hemolymph carbohydrate and fat body glycogen phosphorylase activity > 2-fold compared to controls. In vivo trehalose synthesis was unaffected by agents that enhance intracellular levels of cyclic nucleotides including: dibutyrl cAMP, dibutyryl cGMP, forskolin (adenylyl cyclase activator) and isobutyl methylxanthine (IBMX) or theophylline (cAMP phosphodiesterase inh

Cockroaches are significant health hazards as they can carry and transmit various pathogens, leading to serious illnesses in humans. This study investigates the global prevalence of intestinal protozoan parasites (IPPs) in cockroaches through a systematic review and meta-analysis. Several databases, including (PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, and Google Scholar), were searched for publications covering 2003 to 2024. Following PRISMA guidelines, we identified 5,955 records, resulting in 36 eligible studies. The pooled global prevalence of contaminated cockroaches was estimated at 0.26 (95% CI =

The German cockroach, Blatella germanica (L.), is a suspected vector of several enteric bacterial pathogens, including Escherichia coli, among livestock and humans. However, little is known about the factors that influence bacterial transmission by cockroaches. Here, we orally infected B. germanica with various laboratory and field strains of E. coli and examined bacterial titers over time to shed new light on the factors that influence the dynamics of infection. Our results reveal that a laboratory strain of E. coli is largely cleared within 48 h while one field isolate can persist in a major

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate methods for euthanizing cave cockroaches (CCs; Blaberus giganteus) and Madagascar hissing cockroaches (MHCs; Gromphadorhina portentosa). It was hypothesized that both suggested methods would be effective for humane mass euthanasia of both species.
SAMPLE: Approximately 800 CC.
METHODS: The CCs were separated into replicate groups of 25, 50, 75, 100, and 150 grams and placed into 3.8-L plastic bags. Twenty-seven MHCs were divided into groups of 2 to 3. The study took place from January to March 2023. All CC groups were exposed to 100% carbon dioxide (CO2) at a rate of 4

High rates of pest infestations are frequently reported in low-income homes in the U.S. However, even with access to effective insecticides, most residents are unaware of how to properly control indoor pests. We designed and evaluated the effect of in-home integrated pest management (IPM) education and provision of pest management tool kit on German cockroach (Blattella germanica L.) infestations. Twenty-nine apartments were enrolled based on the presence of German cockroaches. They were divided into two groups: an intervention group (12) and a control group (17). The intervention group receiv

Eyeworms of the genus Oxyspirura infect a wide range of avian hosts worldwide, with more than 50 species described. However, Oxyspirura conjunctivalis (syn. O. youngi) and the recently described O. tamarina have been reported exclusively from captive primates in zoological gardens in Europe and North America. In this study, we report the first record of Oxyspirura infection in a captive Bornean white-bearded gibbon (Hylobates albibarbis) in Japan. Five adult worms recovered from the conjunctival sac measured 7.8-11.1 mm in length and 0.29-0.35 mm in width and exhibited a bipartite buccal capsu

The Turkestan cockroach, Periplaneta lateralis (Walker), is an invasive peridomestic pest expanding across southwestern U.S. habitats, where it has been reported to replace the Oriental cockroach, Blatta orientalis L. Life-history advantages may contribute to this expansion, but its developmental parameters remain poorly characterized. We measured development at 25 and 30 °C under solitary rearing, solitary rearing with photographic monitoring, and cohort rearing. Developmental time was significantly shorter under cohort than solitary rearing. Solitary-reared males and females required 219.8 ±

BACKGROUND: Cockroaches are ubiquitous in residential environments and can act as vectors for pathogens relevant to public health. This investigation aimed to determine the diversity, prevalence, and intensity of parasites carried by the American cockroach, Periplaneta americana, in Shendi City, Sudan.
METHODS: A total of 117 P. americana specimens were collected during the summer of 2021 from residential kitchens, bathrooms and sewers using jar traps baited with bread. Following euthanasia by freezing each cockroach was examined for external and internal parasite stages (cysts and ova) via s

Genes involved in melanin production directly impact insect pigmentation and can affect diverse physiology and behaviours. The role these genes have on sex behaviour, however, is unclear. In the present study, the crucial melanin pigment gene black was functionally characterised in an urban pest, the German cockroach, Blattella germanica. RNAi knockdown of B. germanica black (Bgblack) had no effect on survival, but did result in black pigmentation of the thoraxes, abdomens, heads, wings, legs, antennae, and cerci due to cuticular accumulation of melanin. Sex-specific variation in the pigmentat

Omnivorous synanthropic cockroaches, such as the German cockroach (Blattella germanica), are reservoirs and vectors of enteric bacterial pathogens. A lifestyle conducive to frequent encounters with high loads of diverse bacteria may have led to the evolution of unique innate immune systems in these insects. The innate immune response of insects relies largely on generalized mechanisms to sense and eliminate foreign microbes. However, analyses of the genomes of common synanthropic cockroaches previously revealed a repertoire of pathogen associated molecular pattern (PAMP) receptors and antimicr

BACKGROUND: Although cockroach (CR) is an important cause of allergic sensitization worldwide, only a few data are available in Italy and in a previous study we have observed, in Naples area, a low prevalence of CR sensitization.
OBJECTIVES: We sought to perform a prospective study for assessing the prevalence of allergic sensitization to CR in a sample of atopic population living in Campania district area (Southern Italy).
METHODS: Ten Allergy Units or Centres of Campania district participated in this cross-sectional study. Each centre was required to collect the results of at least 100 all

BACKGROUND: Antigen desensitization through oral tolerance is becoming an increasingly attractive treatment option for allergic diseases. However, the mechanism(s) by which tolerization is achieved remain poorly defined. In this study we endeavored to induce oral tolerance to cockroach allergen (CRA: a complex mixture of insect components) in order to ameliorate asthma-like, allergic pulmonary inflammation.
METHODS: We compared the pulmonary inflammation of mice which had received four CRA feedings prior to intratracheal allergen sensitization and challenge to mice fed PBS on the same time co

BACKGROUND: The parasitoid Jewel Wasp hunts cockroaches to serve as a live food supply for its offspring. The wasp stings the cockroach in the head and delivers a cocktail of neurotoxins directly inside the prey's cerebral ganglia. Although not paralyzed, the stung cockroach becomes a living yet docile 'zombie', incapable of self-initiating spontaneous or evoked walking. We show here that such neuro-chemical manipulation can be attributed to decreased neuronal activity in a small region of the cockroach cerebral nervous system, the sub-esophageal ganglion (SEG). A decrease in descending permis
