Can language restructure cognition? The case for space.

Frames of reference are coordinate systems used to compute and specify the location of objects with respect to other objects. These have long been thought of as innate concepts, built into our neurocognition. However, recent work shows that the use of such frames in language, cognition and gesture varies cross-culturally, and that children can acquire different systems with comparable ease. We argue that language can play a significant role in structuring, or restructuring, a domain as fundamental as spatial cognition. This suggests we need to rethink the relation between the neurocognitive un

Dopamine and the regulation of cognition and attention.

Dopamine (DA) acts as a key neurotransmitter in the brain. Numerous studies have shown its regulatory role for motor and limbic functions. However, in the early stages of Parkinson's disease (PD), alterations of executive functions also suggest a role for DA in regulating cognitive functions. Some other diseases, which can also involve DA dysfunction, such as schizophrenia or attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) in children, as shown from the ameliorative action of dopaminergic antagonists and agonists, respectively, also show alteration of cognitive functions. Experimental studies

Lack of association between vigabatrin and impaired cognition.

Of 14 patients with a history of partial epilepsy who received vigabatrin 2 g daily for 6 months, eight were newly diagnosed and received vigabatrin as monotherapy, while the remaining six received vigabatrin in addition to pre-existing treatment with phenobarbitone. Neurophysiological and neuropsychological evaluations, done before and after the therapeutic period, included the Luria-Nebraska neuropsychological battery (LNNB), electroencephalograms (EEGs) and evoked potentials. The results for each item of the test battery at baseline were compared with those after 6 months' treatment. There

Cognition and immune function in HIV-1 infection.

OBJECTIVES: To determine (1) whether there were differences in cognition between HIV-1-seropositive and HIV-1-seronegative homosexual men and (2), if so, whether these differences could be explained by the degree of immunosuppression [i.e., CD4 cell count and immunoglobulin A (IgA) levels]. DESIGN: A cross-sectional design was used to compare 66 HIV-1-seropositives (Centers for Disease Control stages II and III, n = 56; stages IVA and IVC-2, n = 10) and 37 HIV-1-seronegatives. The HIV-1-seropositives were classified into three immune groups based on their CD4 cell count (x 10(6)/l) and serum

Cognition and 99Tcm-HMPAO SPECT in Parkinson's disease.

99Tcm-hexamethylpropyleneamine oxime (HMPAO) single photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) of brain was performed in 43 unselected patients with Parkinson's disease to evaluate whether low cerebral perfusion on SPECT correlated with cognitive impairment in the patients. All patients received neurological, Mini-Mental State Examination and a neuropsychological assessment. Eighteen (41.9%) of the 43 patients were demented. Thirty patients (69.8%) had abnormal SPECT: 17 had perfusion defects in cortical regions, eight in basal ganglia and five in both regions. Of the 22 patients with abnorma

Cerebral microhemorrhage and cognition in preclinical Alzheimer's disease.

BACKGROUND: Clarifying whether incident cerebral microhemorrhages (CMHs) contribute to early cognitive or functional decline is increasingly important in the context of anti-amyloid therapies. OBJECTIVE: To determine whether incident CMHs are associated with longitudinal changes in cognition and function in cognitively unimpaired individuals with elevated cerebral amyloid. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: Post hoc analysis of individuals enrolled in the A4 study. Participants underwent serial MRI and cognitive assessments. Natural cubic spline models adjusted for baseline amyloid PET burde

The legible body and the language of cognition.

Neural activity moves the body to act on the world, and the world returns through the body to shape neural activity. Systems neuroscience built tasks to cut this loop, isolating low-dimensional, task-related signals and discarding the rest. Tasks suited cognition as classically conceived: general-purpose machinery between sensation and action, performing latent computations abstracted from specific behaviors. With recording techniques limited to tracking individual neurons and discrete actions, it took tasks to make cognition legible by supplying meaning within a limited but generalizable fram

Clinical cognition in the age of cardiovascular AI.

Artificial intelligence (AI) is rapidly entering cardiovascular medicine through electrocardiography, imaging, wearable monitoring, risk prediction, heart failure management, and clinical decision support. Its value, however, should not be judged only by technical accuracy, speed, or computational sophistication. Cardiovascular care requires clinicians and teams to convert multimodal, longitudinal, incomplete, and context-dependent information into action under uncertainty. This Perspective argues that AI should be understood not as a replacement for clinical intuition, but as a cognitive inst

Social Cognition in Multiple Sclerosis: A Multidomain Investigation.

While cognitive functioning in multiple sclerosis has been extensively studied, the presence of social cognition deficits in persons affected by relapsing-remitting multiple sclerosis (RRMS) remains comparatively less explored. This study recruited 30 Turkish patients with RRMS and 30 healthy controls (HCs) matched for demographic characteristics and cognitive status. We tested their social cognition abilities within two main subdomains, namely, theory of mind (ToM) and emotion recognition. The combination of tests we used was novel and rather broad as ToM was evaluated in both its affective a

Interplay between physical activity, tau pathophysiology, and cognition.

Physical activity (PA) has emerged as a modifiable protective lifestyle factor for Alzheimer's disease (AD). In a recent study by Kim and colleagues, higher levels of PA were associated with reduced phosphorylated tau (ptau) 217 concentrations even after accounting for β-amyloid (Aβ) brain uptake, suggesting a link with tau pathophysiology; this link also mediated better general cognition.

Impaired cognition in narcolepsy: clinical and neurobiological perspectives.

In addition to well-known symptoms such as sleepiness and cataplexy, many people with narcolepsy have impaired cognition, reporting inattention, poor memory, and other concerns. Unfortunately, research on cognition in narcolepsy has been limited. Strong evidence demonstrates difficulties with sustained attention, but evidence for executive dysfunction and impaired memory is mixed. Animal research provides some insights into how loss of the orexin neurons in narcolepsy type 1 may give rise to impaired cognition via dysfunction of the prefrontal cortex, and cholinergic and monoaminergic systems.

Intravesical Bacille Calmette-Guerin (BCG) Vaccine Affects Cognition.

The Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA) is a valuable assessment of the patient's awareness of time and place. We show that bacille Calmette-Guerin (BCG) significantly affects MoCA testing when administered by the intravesical route. MoCA scores were lower with increasing age and higher in more formally educated individuals. Patients receiving BCG tended to maintain their MoCA scores, whereas almost half the control cases tended to show reduced scores. This benefit is supported by reduced pre-amyloid biomarkers in BCG-injected healthy volunteers and a favorable effect on neuronal dendritic de

Social cognition in adults with neurofibromatosis type 1.

OBJECTIVE: Adult patients with the genetic disease neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1) frequently report social difficulties. To date, however, only two studies have explored whether these difficulties are caused by social cognition deficits, and these yielded contradictory data. The aim of the present study was to exhaustively assess social cognition abilities (emotion, theory of mind, moral reasoning, and social information processing) in adults with NF1, compared with a control group, and to explore links between social cognition and disease characteristics (mode of inheritance, severity, and vi

Social cognition in children with neurofibromatosis type 1.

INTRODUCTION: Neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1) is a genetic pathology that can lead to impaired social functioning that has a negative impact on patients' quality of life. To date, although the hypothesis of impaired social cognition has been proposed as a potential explanation for these difficulties, very few studies have focused on theory of mind in children with NF1. Furthermore, other complex sociocognitive abilities have never been investigated. The aim of the present study was to assess theory of mind, moral reasoning, and social information processing in children with NF1 compared with a

Cognition in Bipolar Disorder: An Update for Clinicians.

Bipolar disorder is associated with cognitive deficits, which persist across mood states and affect functional outcomes. This article provides an overview of recent progress in measuring cognition in bipolar disorder and its implications for both research and clinical practice. The authors summarize work conducted over the past decade that has helped guide researchers and clinicians in the appropriate measurement of cognitive functioning in bipolar disorder, the design of research studies targeting this domain for treatment, and the implementation of screening and psychoeducational tools in th

E4BP4 Coordinates Circadian Control of Cognition in Delirium.

Improved understanding of the etiologies of delirium, a common and severe neuropsychiatric syndrome, would facilitate the disease prevention and treatment. Here, the authors invesitgate the role of circadian rhythms in the pathogenesis of delirium. They observe perturbance of circadian rhythms in mouse models of delirium and disrupted clock gene expression in patients with delirium. In turn, physiological and genetic circadian disruptions sensitize mice to delirium with aggravated cognitive impairment. Likewise, global deletion of E4bp4 (E4 promoter-binding protein), a clock gene markedly alte

Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder from an Embodied Cognition Perspective.

Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) is characterized by problems of control over behavior and cognition. Although almost all of the studies on pathogenesis of OCD point out fronto-striatal dysfunction, it is still not possible to reveal mechanisms to explain the entire clinical course of OCD through these circuits. A more holistic explanation can be given through the Embodied Cognition (EC) perspective, which suggests that the alteration/dysfunction of low-level sensory-motor process may appear as a multifarious extent of dysfunction of high-level cognitive processes. Fronto-striatal circuits

Number estimation in Down syndrome: Cognition or experience?

BACKGROUND: The ability to place numbers on a visual "number line" is a hallmark of the understanding of numerical magnitude and it is a strong predictor of mathematical achievement. AIM: We examined whether the performance in the number line estimation task is more driven by mental age or experience with numbers in a sample of Italian children with Down syndrome (DS). METHOD AND PROCEDURE: Sixty-three children with DS (Mmonths = 128.62, SD = 30.73) and sixty-three typically developing children (Mmonths = 54.98, SD = 6.34) matched one to one for mental age completed number line estimation ta
